German Film Festival 2015

WILLKOMMEN ZUM DEUTSCHEN FILMFESTIVAL 2015 The Goethe-Institut is delighted to present cinemagoers in New Zealand with a colourful bouquet of films from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Our team has already enjoyed choosing and debating our favourite picks for this year’s programme, which will take you on a factual and fictional journey through the German past and present, covering diverse terrain. From historical documentaries to comedies and crime dramas, our selection includes films that will get you thinking, laughing and gripping your seat. We are also thrilled to be showing Lola on the Pea, a wonderful children’s feature that younger and older viewers will enjoy. To spare you the difficult task of narrowing down the list and to enable everyone to join in, we have decided that admission to the films should be free this year. Small donations are welcome, but there will be no entry fee. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept advance bookings: tickets can be obtained from the box office before the start of each screening, so please arrive in plenty of time and take the opportunity to talk to us and other film enthusiasts. We look forward to watching and discussing the films with you in Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin and also in New Plymouth, where the German Film Festival is making its debut this year. The generosity of our sponsors and partners has enabled us to make the Festival happen: we would like to thank them all for their support. Bettina Senff Director Goethe-Institut New Zealand Welcome to this nationwide German Film Festival. From 8 September to 4 October 2015 you will be able to enjoy new German films in Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin and New Plymouth in their original language with English subtitles. Germany and New Zealand have enjoyed a close relationship for over 60 years. We cooperate in many fields, economically, politically and culturally. That is why the German Film Festival is a great opportunity for our two countries to further strengthen our cultural understanding. This Festival covers a wide range of areas to showcase the diversity of German cinema today. This year Germany celebrates 25 years since re-unification. The merging of East and West Germany was and continues to be an issue which is gradually being resolved. What could be more appropriate than to start this Film Festival with a film about the memorable night of 9 November 1989 when the Berlin Wall opened. The film Bornholmer Straße shows this exciting event from the point of view of an East German commanding officer, Harald Schäfer. It is a truly unique and heroic story. I hope you all enjoy the Film Festival! Dr. Anne-Marie Schleich Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany

(ELSER – ER HÄTTE DIE WELT VERÄNDERT)

A much better film than Downfall (Der Untergang) is Oliver Hirschbiegel’s new masterpiece about Johann Georg Elser, who tragically failed to kill Hitler. On 8 November 1939 he placed a carefully constructed time bomb behind Adolf Hitler’s lectern in the Bürgerbräu beer cellar in Munich. It worked perfectly and exploded at exactly the time it was meant to. But the ‘Führer’ left the building 13 minutes earlier than planned and survived. Elser was arrested, tortured and sent to the concentration camp Sachsenhausen and later to Dachau, where he was executed only days before the end of the war in April 1945. Who was this man, and where did Elser (4 January 1903 – 9 April 1945), a carpenter from a small Bavarian town, find the courage and moral strength to risk everything?

Were you born in the 50s or 60s? Have you heard of Blixa Bargeld and Einstürzende Neubauten, or are you in love with Berlin? Then this film is a must for you! The documentary by Jörg A. Hoppe, Heiko Lange and Klaus Maeck is a monument in honour of West-Berlin’s wild 1980s, when Berlin was really, really cool. Everything was possible, nothing seemed forbidden in this island city in the middle of the GDR. In the last decade before the fall of the wall, West Berlin had become a centre for artists, squatters, subversive ideas, subcultures, drugs, trash, ugliness and passion. And musician and author Mark Reeder from Manchester meets them all: Blixa Bargeld, Nick Cave, Gudrun Gut, Christiane F. and many, many others.

THE BONE MAN

(DER KNOCHENMANN)

From Austria comes this celebrated, very black film version of Wolf Haas’ crime novel of the same name. In search of a man called Horvath, who seems to have disappeared, private detective Brenner finds himself in a famous “Backhendlstation“ in the Styrian countryside. The well-known inn specialises in roast chicken and is owned by a shady character, brilliantly played by Josef Bierbichler. And slowly it becomes clear that Austria is not an idyllic place of unspoiled beauty and innocence. A gruesome discovery is made in the pile of chicken bones waiting to be fed into the basement grinder, and Brenner is in great danger. Recommended for all crime film lovers with a dark sense of humour.

BORNHOLMER STRASSE

This year Germany celebrates 25 years of re-unification. And what could be more appropriate, than to start our Film Festival 2015 with a film about this memorable night of 9th November, 1989. The film tells the story of the events at the Berlin checkpoint Bornholmer Straße, where the commanding officer Harald Schäfer (Charly Hübner) wonders what to make of Günther Schabowski’s announcement at a press conference, that from this day forward all citizens of the German Democratic Republic are allowed to leave the country if they wish.

“In this tragicomedy, Charly Hübner is brilliant as a GDR border guard who, on 9 November 1989, has to make a decision that could change history.” – Kester Schlenz, Der Stern

CONCRETE LOVE – THE BÖHM FAMILY

(DIE BÖHMS – ARCHITEKTUR EINER FAMILIE)

In this film, young Swiss director Maurizius Staerkle-Drux very successfully paints a touching portrait of 94-year old architect, Gottfried Böhm, and his family. Gottfried Böhm is one of Germany’s most important architects. The Pritzker prize-winning father learned his trade from his father. Gottfried still works every day on construction projects with his sons, Stephan, Peter and Paul, who are also architects. This documentary won the Goethe-Institut Documentary Film Prize at the prestigious 57th DOK Leipzig. The film weaves together multiple stories about love, passion for architecture, and four generations of German history, combining sensitive observations, intimate interviews and impressive cinematographic explorations of an outstanding architectural legacy to create a lasting impression of the buildings and the people.

LOLA ON THE PEA

(LOLA AUF DER ERBSE)

Our 2015 festival’s favourite children’s film: Nine-year-old Lola lives on a houseboat called “The Pea” with her mother Loretta, waiting for her father to resurface after he had vanished into thin air over a year ago. When her mother, Loretta, starts dating someone else, Lola is torn between her loyalty towards her father and the new guy, who is actually quite nice. In this situation, Lola becomes friends with her new classmate Rebin, a Kurd living illegally in Germany who has serious problems of his own. This beautifully crafted tale captures the pain and joy of childhood with honesty, humour and a big heart. Though made as a “children’s film,” its approach to common family issues makes it wonderfully entertaining and highly rewarding for all age groups.

“It’s a gentle, nuanced movie with strong female characters about tolerance and doing the right thing.” – Paul Constant, The Stranger

(NICHT MEIN TAG)

Till Reiners (Axel Stein) is a “Spießer” – a stuffed shirt, working in a bank in a sleepy town in the German Ruhr area. His life changes dramatically when ex-con Nappo (brilliant: Moritz Bleibtreu) robs his bank and takes Till hostage. After a series of tragi-comic events and misunderstandings, it becomes clear that this is just not their day! Crazy action comedy, road movie, with great music and genuinely funny. Oh, and try to spot overrated German celebrity actor Til Schweiger in a mini role as himself.

18 year old overweight Cindy lives in Berlin-Schönefeld, a bleak suburban area. Her life is colourless, without prospects. She gets bullied by her classmates and even her father calls her “Rosinenbomber”. Of course there is also the little dog Werner and Cindy’s slightly eccentric childhood friend Danny. But Danny leaves Berlin to sign up for a military operation in Afghanistan. Against all odds Cindy proves to be a positive life-affirming young woman and much to everyone’s surprise she wins the heart of married Finnish businessman, Leif. She starts to dream the impossible dream of a future together. Then Danny comes back. War and drugs have destroyed him. He now needs Cindy’s friendship more than ever, but she is put off by his aggressive behaviour. The beautiful acting of Julia Jendroßek as lovely Cindy makes this tragi-comic comingof-age story definitely worth seeing.

WHO AM I – NO SYSTEM IS SAFE

TOUR DE FORCE

(HIN UND WEG)

A German contribution to the discussion about a controversial subject: Hannes is suffering from an incurable disease and he plans to end his life in Belgium, where assisted suicide is legal. Without telling his friends that the trip is to be his last, he asks them to join him and his wife Kiki for their annual bike tour. This film is packed with emotions, so you had better bring a handkerchief and a friend!

(WHO AM I – KEIN SYSTEM IST SICHER)

A cybercrime thriller from Germany! Nerdy Benjamin and his over confident friend Max share one mutual interest: hacking. They form the subversive group CLAY. With bold actions against a neo-Nazi group and a pharmaceutical company they aim for global fame and Benjamin is especially keen to impress star-hacker MRX. But then they go too far and suddenly the group is being investigated by the German Secret Service and Europol. With an exciting plot and a great soundtrack, this film strikes us as a fresh, young and cool example of a good movie for international thriller fans.

“Fusing high-stakes intrigue, crackling tension and stylish action sequences, and set to an electrifying soundtrack by Boys Noize, Who Am I is a suspensefilled meditation on the search for identity in the information age.” – Jane Schoettle, Toronto International Film Festival
