The Mekong Basin Disease Surveillance (MBDS) consortium is a self-organized sub-regional cooperation spearheaded by health ministries from member countries to collaborate on infectious disease surveillance and control. The cooperation focuses on crossborder cooperation at selected sites and has matured through several phases of work;  

MBDS Core Strategies

In 2001, MBDS partners commenced their formal cooperation by focusing on building basic epidemiology capacity at national and local levels. In 2003, the first four MBDS cross-border sites were established with initial activities focusing on exchange of surveillance information on both sides of the border at each site – for agreed upon diseases and reporting frequencies. In 2006, MBDS expanded its efforts beyond surveillance and undertook a series of provincial, national and regional tabletop exercises related to pandemic influenza preparedness. In 2008, MBDS developed a new 6-year action plan focusing on seven inter-related core strategies which are;

Change your password via SMS

Normal messages in GeoChat go to every user in the group, but you can also send a message only to one user. These messages are called “Direct Messages”. A direct message also belongs to a group, and can be seen by everyone in the group, sent as a message through SMS, mail or twitter.

To change your password from your mobile phone, send “.my password NEW PASSWORD” replacing “NEW PASSWORD” with your password. Example: “.my password Apple123”.

Direct messages can be sent by specifying the username, email or phone prefixed with “@” at the beginning of the message.

Join / Leave a group via SMS

Example:

To join a group via SMS send “join GROUP_ALIAS” replacing “GROUP_ALIAS” with the alias of the group. Example: “join FOI”.

BOE Hospital-Based ILI Reporting System

Thailand: Real Time ILI Feedback  500 Hospital staff are getting immediate feedback over SMS If ILI rates are abnormally high in their area. Mukdahan: Much faster ILI, H1N1 Reporting  AI & ILI Reports are sent 24 hours sooner than before GeoChat (est)  GeoChat is being used weekly to report ILI cases (as well as potential H1N1, H5N1 cases) by 118 staff.  We know 1 leptospirosis outbreak was contained 1-2 days sooner because of Geochat – horizontal communication alerted neighboring districts immediately. Cambodia: Greater Awareness of H5N1, H1N1 Status  Entire CDC, covering 24 provincies from remote health centers to national level, including officials at all borders, were more informed about status of H5N1 because of GeoChat alerts. 73 provincial, 25 national staff.  90% of respondents on an evaluation said GeoChat was useful in keeping them informed about swine flu during the outbreak.
