Clean and inspect manway cover groove and top of manway nozzle per MSRP-C-III Appendix D Section 6. Place the gasket on top of the nozzle. Make sure the gasket covers the nozzle uniformly. Inspect bolts per MSRP-C-III Appendix D Section 6.4. Tighten all nuts finger tight. Torque all nuts to 30-40 ft-lbs in the proper torque sequence. In a second pass around the cover, torque all nuts to 60-70 ft-lbs in the proper torque sequence. In a final pass, tighten all nuts to 100-110 ft-lbs in the proper torque sequence. Use rotational tightening and reverse rotational tightening until stable.
This procedure applies to all SALCO elastomeric nozzle gaskets. Other gasket materials and configurations of gaskets may require more or less torque. In case of leaks during a pressure test, go to Step 7 and 8, but proceed to 120-125 ft-lbs. If leaks still occur, unbolt the cover and check the gasket groove, nozzle gasket and nozzle.
Note:
Torque values were calculated using new A307 Grade B eyebolts, A194 Grade 2H hex nuts, washers and thread lubricant. Additional bolts that can also use these values: ASTM A193 Class 1: Grade B8, B8C and B8M ASTM A307 Grade A ASTM A320 Class 1: Grade B8, B8C, B8F, B8M and B8T These values are approximations. Please contact Salco Engineering for more detailed torque recommendations.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR Installation Instructions QUICK INSPECTS For Quick Inspects INSTALL UNIT TO CAR: 1. Remove existing safety vent. 2. This unit must be applied to a flange surface only! DO NOT apply to raised face or recessed flanges. 3. Be sure flange gasket is in place before installation. Use only SALCO gaskets or equivalent. Attach unit to car with three (3) 5/8" bolts. Alternate tightening of bolts to ensure even pressure. Bolt torque requirements are 35-40 FT-LBS. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN! INSTALLATION OF RUPTURE DISC: 4. Remove the rupture disc securement cap and the top cap. Place the gaskets, surge protector and rupture disc as shown in Figure 2. 5. Replace the rupture disc securement cap over the stainless steel/Teflon rupture disc as shown in Figure 2. Before tightening, ensure the rupture disc is centered. Tighten the disc securement cap until hand tight. Lay the SALCO Quick Inspect wrench (QI261HDL) across the tabs (See Figure 1) and tighten the securement cap an additional 1/4 turn. If you do not have a quick inspect wrench, place a 3/8" flat bar across the tabs in the disc securement cap. With a rubber mallet, tap the bar the additional 1/4 turn. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN! Over tightening of the securement cap can distort the disc and may affect performance. NOTE: Torque specifications for tightening the rupture disc securement cap depend on the rupture disc used. Ryton disc = 20 ft-lbs. SS/PTFE disc = 27 ft-lbs. If the disc does not seal, increase the torque in 5 ft-lb increments not to exceed 90° beyond the initial tightening. If leaks persist, check the gasket(s) and sealing surfaces for damage. 6. When using rupture discs other than stainless steel/Teflon (i.e. Ryton or graphite) remove any gaskets adhered to the disc except for Teflon gaskets. Do not install any rupture discs that show signs of damage. DO NOT REMOVE ANY CLEAR TEFLON LINERS! 7. Install the top cap HAND TIGHT. The top cap is not a pressure retaining part. The cap protects the rupture disc from weather. If your car has a two-bolt application or if you have any other questions, please contact our engineering department at 630-783-2570. MAINTENANCE: Examine the Quick Inspect and rupture disc for damage as recommended by FRA guidelines. If the Quick Inspect is cracked or damaged in any way, removed from service. MAGNETIC GAUGING DEVICE MGD1000 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Installation Instructions Flanged Version FLANGED VERSION
Magnetic Gauging Device MGD1000 1. Do not remove the individual gauge device components from their packaging until it is time to install each component. This will keep them clean and undamaged. 2. Insure that the hole through the pressure plate is at least 1 1/8” in diameter. This is required to allow the gauge rod to fit through the pressure plate. For a typical approved mounting, refer to the AAR Tank Car Manual, Appendix E, Figure E9.7. 3. The guide tube must be installed 90 degrees to the pressure plate. First, tack weld the guide tube to the pressure plate and check the alignment with a square. If the socket is oversized for the pipe, be sure the guide tube is centered on the hole. A 3/8” fillet weld using a stainless steel rod such as AWS E-309 or equal is recommended. The weld must not be undercut. If the guide tube is threaded into the pressure plate, tighten the tube without using tools that mar the surface of the tube. Seal weld the connection. 4. Install the upper spring collar with the spring facing down (see Figure 1). Next, install the float on the guide tube. The float has Teflon guide bushings, which are the interface between the float and the guide tube. One bushing is red and the other bushing is white. The float must be installed on the guide tube with the red bushing pointing toward the pressure plate, and the white bushing pointing toward the bottom of the tank. The end of the float with the red bushing is also etched with the letters “TOP.” Once the float is installed on the guide tube, it must be protected at all times from heat and weld splatter. Always slide the float on the guide tube away from the area being welded. Install the lower spring collar with the spring facing up (see Figure 1). 5. It is the installer’s responsibility to insure that the float cannot come in contact with the tank shell, pressure plate, or other structural members at any time especially while in transit. The top spring should be placed so that when compressed, the float is kept from contacting anything but the spring. The top spring must also allow the highest desired outage to be read. The bottom spring should be placed low enough to ensure that the lowest desired outage can be read. Tack weld the collars to the guide tube to keep them in place. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR VACUUM RELIEF VALVES The following procedure is a guide for the installation and removal of a Salco Products Vacuum Relief Valve (VRV). This procedure applies to both 1 ½” and 2 ½” threaded vacuum relief valves. 1. 2. 3. 4.
Ensure threads and valve body are clean and free of debris in order to assure proper thread engagement. Apply PTFE tape or pipe compound to VRV threads in order to achieve a pressure tight seal. Whatever product is used, ensure it is compatible with the commodity. Hand thread the VRV into car fitting to ensure no cross threading is occurring. Wrench tighten the VRV using the hex portion of the valve body. Leak test installation of VRV per car owner’s or facility maintenance instructions.

Like all Apollo ball valves, they feature blowout-proof stem design and adjustable packing. In addition, these valves have standard position locking device and anti-static grounding device for ball and stem. An ISO 5211 actuator mounting pad is a standard feature as well. Used primarily for loading and unloading of tank cars, these valves have additional features built in to address this application. The ball is slot vented to relieve thermal expansion of volatile media in the valve’s body cavity. They are of firesafe construction to guard against leakage in case of accident. A special no-rise handle enables installation in tight spaces where low overall height is a concern. Most important, they are full-port design to maximize flow and minimize loading/unloading time.

Saturn series ball valves are unibody valves with investment cast construction. The unibody design prevents accidental disassembly of the valve during maintenance or piping repair. AAR APPROVAL NO. E119022 Apollo® 73A-100-52 series is a 2000 psig forged A105 carbon steel ball valve with threaded ends. Apollo 89-100-52 series is an investment cast A216-WCB carbon steel ball valve with threaded ends, rated to 2000 psig to 1” and 1500 psig to 2” size. Both series are two-piece designs with regular port balls, blowout-proof stem design, RPTFE seats and MPTFE packing. Packing is adjustable. E119022 Apollo® 76 and 76F-A Series valves are two-piece investment cast ball valves that are an ideal choice for transportation applications. 76F valves offer a full port design to maximize flow efficiency. Sized from 1/4” to 3”, these valves feature threaded end connections and lever handles as standard. They meet NACE MR-01-75 guidelines. Apollo 76-100-52 and 76F-100 Series ball valves feature an A351 CF8M stainless steel body and investment cast components for high performance and extended service life. AAR APPROVAL NO. E119031 Apollo® 87A-385-A0, 87A-388-A0 and 87A-380-A0 valves are A351 CF8M stainless steel ball valves with threaded end x ANSI 150 flanged connections. Like all Apollo ball valves, they feature blowout-proof stem design and adjustable packing. In addition, these valves have standard position locking device and anti-static grounding device for ball and stem. An ISO 5211 actuator mounting pad is a standard feature as well. Used primarily for loading and unloading of tank cars, these valves have additional features built in to address this application. The ball is slot vented to relieve thermal expansion of volatile media in the valve’s body cavity. They are of firesafe construction to guard against leakage in case of accident. A special no-rise handle enables installation in tight spaces where low overall height is a concern. Most important, they are full-port design to maximize flow and minimize loading/unloading time. In addition, these valves are bolted construction, so are repairable to ensure leakproof installations. They can also be disassembled for complete cleaning of all interior surfaces.

SIZES : 1/2” - 6” AAR APPROVAL NO. E119030 Apollo® Series 87A and 88A are becoming the industry’s preferred flanged ball valves since they include many standard features available only as costly options on other brands. These Class 150 valves feature a blowout-proof stem design that meets API 608 torsional requirements. Their dual position lock plate (another standard feature) meets OSHA lockout/ tagging regulations. The valves are “actuator friendly” featuring an ISO 5211 mounting pad. The valves are equipped with a grounded ball and stem. The ball is vented in the stem slot to relieve body cavity pressure in the open position. A heavy-duty 316 stainless steel gland plate mates with the packing gland to assure secure, self-aligning compression of the packing. Standard seats for the 87A and 88A Series are RPTFE. Their deep-pocketed design protects the seats from pressure spikes and media buildup. An RPTFE gasket is also standard; spiral wound 316 SS gaskets with PTFE or graphite fillers are optional. Valves are also available firetested to API 607 5th edition by specifying -24 option. Stainless steel ball and seat are also available for the 88A Series. While most transportation applications require valves sized 3” or smaller, Apollo flanged ball valves are available in larger sizes, as needed.

SAFETY GUARD IN OPEN POSITION
1. Adjust the length of the shoulder strap with the buckle. Put the shoulder strap over your shoulder to carry the Handrail Safety Guard to the top of the car while allowing your hands to be free. 2. Once on the car’s top platform, remove each pin from its pin hole and allow the pins to hang down from the cables. Slip the aluminum body over the opening in the handrail. Replace each pin in the pin hole and secure each with the locking arm. Make sure each pin passes under the handrail the Safety Guard is resting on. 3. If after the Handrail Safety Guard is in place, a person needs to leave the platform area via the ladder, the Safety Guard can be rotated out of the way temporarily to allow access. This is done by removing one pin from its pin hole, rotating the Safety Guard body more than 90° and allowing the safety guard body to rest on the handrail. Always put the Safety Guard back down on the handrail after access is complete. The Handrail Safety Guard should never be left up in the air. 4. When work on top of the car is complete and the Handrail Safety Guard is ready to be removed, remove each pin from its pin hole, raise the Safety Guard off the handrail and replace each pin in its pin hole making sure to secure each with the locking arm. Put the shoulder strap over your shoulder to carry the Handrail Safety Guard to the ground while allowing your hands to be free. 5. Reflective tape is included on both sides of the Safety Guard body to increase its visibility in all lighting conditions.
