general information Smith Commons Dining Room & Public House is a three-story neighborhood bistro on the H Street NE corridor in the Atlas Arts District. With an internationally inspired menu of approachable cuisine and an array of craft beers, wines, and cocktails at three bars, Smith Commons offers something for every palate. The well-honed interiors, seasonal outdoor patios, regular exciting events and eclectic music welcome Smiths of any name, and friends nightly. The event spaces include a main Dining Room on the ground-floor level with a large bar, and the “commons” — or Public House — on levels two and three, each with its own bar, dining tables, lounge space, and outdoor dining/drinking decks.

private dining Private dining Smith Commons offers reception space and 2- or 3-course seated dinners for up to 30 guests Sunday through Thursday. We require an accurate guest count and a prearranged, limited menu to ensure efficient service. The third floor bar and lounge space may be reserved for parties or receptions of up to 50 guests.

Minimums Minimum purchase requirements apply to food and beverage totals, exclusive of tax, gratuity, and any other additional fees. Event minimums vary by day, space, and type of event. Please contact the Events Manager for date-specific pricing and space availability.

Menus All food packages must be finalized at least 5 days in advance, with final menu selection made at that time.

Alternative Cuisine Vegetarian and vegan selections are available upon request. Please notify the Events Manager during the planning process and provide at least 72 hours in advance of your event for any special considerations.

special events Special Occasion Cakes We have preferred pastry chefs that will be happy to design a custom cake or cupcakes for your celebration. If a cake is brought in with written approval from the Events Manager, a $2/person cutting fee will be charged.

Bar There are three options for bar/beverage charges: (1) they can be included in your menu price at a per-person cost; (2) beverages can be charged by consumption and applied to a single “host tab”; or (3) beverage service can be on a cash-bar basis for each guest. Bartender fees may be applicable.

Special Services The Events Manager can help coordinate photography, flowers, linens, and other rentals for your event. Any associated charges or fees will be applied to the final invoice/event cost. You are welcome to coordinate these items through your preferred vendors, with prior notice to — and approval from — the Events Manager.

Audiovisual Equipment Audiovisual rental and services are available on site upon request for additional fee. Smith Commons currently has a projector and drop-down screen for use on the third floor, available at no cost to guests.

Guarantee Numbers A guaranteed guest count must be provided 72 hours prior to the event. If no confirmation is received at that time, the final invoice will be based on the number of guests shown on the most recent event contract on record. Any additional guests will be charged at the contracted menu and beverage price.

Fees/Billing/Deposit All reservations require a $150 fee (per space) to hold your event date and space, plus a nonrefundable deposit of 50% of the event’s food cost. Unless no food is ordered, a signed contract and a valid credit card number are required to confirm a private event and are held on file. Deposits are credited toward the total event cost. The balance amount of the total contract must be paid in full on the event date.

Service Charge & Tax A 20% service charge and 10% sales tax are applied to all bookings and will be adjusted accordingly to reflect actual food and beverage consumption as well as services provided.

spaces Architect James Phillips designed the transformation of 1245 H St. NE from a carpet warehouse to an inviting neighborhood dining destination. Smith Commons features a bar on each level, white oak floors, exposed-brick walls, picture windows, outdoor decks, and a loft space that overlooks the second-floor lounge. Ty Hand-Smith of Design 36ixty brought the look and feel of the space together with accent lighting, highback chairs, soft lounge furniture, and a contemporary mix of finishes, textures, and visual elements that make for a uniquely comfortable and sophisticated setting.
