FSN/VOLLEYBALL TRAINING COMPLEX 2007 VOLLEYBALL

Flames Sports Network For the fourth consecutive year, the Flames Sports Network (FSN) will televise a majority of the Liberty volleyball team’s home matches during the 2007 season. The network, which is slated to broadcast 10 regular-season matches and the Big South Championship from the Vines Center, has covered Liberty’s athletic teams for the past 27 years, including both radio and television coverage. Ray Jones, who also works on the FSN football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball broadcasts, returns this season as play-by-play commentator for volleyball. Jones, who will be doing volleyball play-by-play for the fourth straight season, has been a part of the FSN team since 1991. Jones will be joined this season by Lee Beaumont, who will provide

color commentary and analysis. Beaumont is a familiar face on the Liberty campus, as he serves as the LU director of auxiliary services. FSN’s television broadcast team consists of trained professionals who have worked for most of the major sporting networks in the United States, including ESPN, ABC Sports, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, NASCAR, SportSouth, Comcast and Fox Sports. FSN’s television broadcasting of Liberty’s home athletic events is handled through the Liberty Channel, a satellite/cable network offering family-friendly television. This season, Liberty home volleyball matches and conference road contests will also be streamed over the Internet via the Big South EDGE. New Volleyball Training Complex During the spring of 2007, the Liberty volleyball program was given a secondary practice facility as part of a new, on-campus training complex. The existing $750,000 facility on Campus East houses the volleyball coaches’ offices and a team room, and serves as the team’s exclusive practice facility whenever the Vines Center is unavailable. “We are excited about the direction of Liberty Volleyball,” stated

head volleyball coach Shane Pinder. “It is amazing to see God’s hand moving in all areas of our program. The most recent miracle is the addition of new office spaces, which includes a team room with a practice gymnasium attached. This facility will allow us a better opportunity to recruit as well as more opportunities to train the team throughout the season. The new volleyball complex takes another step towards Dr. Falwell’s dream and vision of build-

ing a world-class University and athletics program.” Junior middle blocker Ashley Webber added, “The new facility will not only strengthen our team on the court, but also off the court as young women serving the Lord.” Donations are being sought in order to furnish the new facility. BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE

VOLLEYBALL

2007 VOLLEYBALL

4

For more than 20 years, the Big South Conference has been a progressive, NCAA Division I athletic conference reflecting the energy and growth of the Southeastern United States. Founded in 1983, the Big South has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence both on the field of play and in the classroom. Based in Charlotte, N.C., the Big South Conference’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic league is evident by competitive success on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, the enhancement of the quality of the student-athlete experience and strategic planning that has carried the Big South through the first decade of the 21st century. Entering its 24th year of existence in 2007-08, the Big South Conference continues to emerge by providing quality athletic competition and intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The league consists of eight member institutions: Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, High Point, Liberty, UNC Asheville, Radford, Virginia Military Institute and Winthrop. Two new members will join the Big South footprint in 2008-09 with the addition of Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, which began its transition to Division I athletics in 2006. In the fall of 2002, the Big South welcomed the addition of football as a conference sport, bringing the number of Division I championship programs the Big South sponsors to 18, joining men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor/outdoor track, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, softball and baseball. The Big South receives automatic bids to NCAA Championships in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's golf, baseball, softball and men's and women's tennis. The Big South reached new heights in 2006-07, as the league experienced monumental milestones in nearly every sport. In football, Coastal Carolina became the first Big South

LIBERTY LADY FLAMES

member to receive a berth in the NCAA Division I Playoffs, being selected as an at-large participant to highlight the conference’s fifth year of sponsoring football. In men’s basketball, Winthrop became the first Big South member to be ranked in the national Top 25 and the first to win a first-round NCAA Tournament game with its 74-64 victory over Notre Dame. In women’s basketball, the Big South had two teams participate in the postseason for the first time in league history. In men’s golf, Coastal Carolina became the first Big South squad to advance to the final round of the NCAA Championship and finished fifth – the conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In softball, Winthrop became the first Big South member to reach the championship game of an NCAA Regional. In baseball, Coastal Carolina was ranked as high as No. 10 in the national polls, received a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Regional and became the first Big South member to host an NCAA Regional. In volleyball, Winthrop became the first Big South member to win a game in the NCAA Tournament. The Big South also had its first-ever women’s cross country All-American in 2006-07, as well as its first women’s golf All-American in 10 years. Additionally, Radford tennis player Martin Sayer was selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship for the second-straight year. Liberty’s Josh McDougal received All-America honors in the three running sports (cross country, indoor track and outdoor track) for the second-consecutive season. Coastal Carolina golfer Dustin Johnson was at one time the No. 1-ranked college golfer en route to earning firstteam All-America honors for the second year in a row. The conference’s on-field accomplishments were duplicated in the classroom as well. A total of 36 Big South student-athletes were named

Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), nine of whom earned Academic All-America accolades. In football, Coastal Carolina’s Anthony Franklin received an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, and eight Big South member sports teams were honored by the NCAA for their latest Academic Progress Rate. In addition, more than 40 percent of conference student-athletes achieve at least a 3.0 grade point average each year. The league also recognizes and honors academic excellence with the Presidential Honor Roll and the George A. Christenberry Award, which recognizes student-athletes graduating with a 4.0 grade point average. Additionally, the conference's Sports Information Directors annually select a ScholarAthlete in each conference sport, plus a male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

HEAD COACH SHANE PINDER 2007 VOLLEYBALL

Shane PINDER Head Coach Fourth Year at Liberty 32-59 Luther Rice Seminary, ‘04 Head coach Shane Pinder is entering his fourth season at the helm of the Lady Flames’ volleyball program. Last season, Pinder guided the Lady Flames to a 9-5 conference mark, which enabled the team to capture the No. 3 seed in the Big South Championship and host a first-round match for the first time since 2001. Both senior middle blocker Autum Black and freshman setter Kallie Corbin were included on the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State second-team roster at season’s end. Liberty had never boasted multiple VaSID honorees before. Corbin captured a number of honors during a stellar freshman campaign, including the VaSID State Rookie of the Year award and the Big South Freshman of the Year distinction. Pinder oversaw the emergence of sophomore setter Lara Bartolomeo, sophomore outside hitter Jessica Nelson and freshman outside hitter Kendall Nichols in 2005. Bartolomeo and Nelson ranked among the Big South leaders in assists and kills,

one was named Big South Conference MVP, one garnered Virginia State All-District honors and one player was included on the VaSID All-State first team. Before returning to Liberty as head volleyball coach, Pinder served as an assistant coach at Brookville High School with former Liberty volleyball player, Athena Arronson. During the summer months, he has conducted volleyball camps and clinics, while also being a personal trainer to local athletes. Pinder served as an assistant girls’ volleyball coach at Lynchburg Christian Academy for one season and as the team’s head coach for a year. He was the head girls’ volleyball coach at Dade Christian High School in Miami, Fla., for three years and the head women’s volleyball coach of the Miramar-Pal Volleyball Club in Miami, Fla., for two years. Before his leap into coaching, Pinder played on the South Florida Pro Beach tour for several years and also played on Miami’s USVBA Club Team. He was a four-year letterwinner in football, basketball and baseball during his prep career at Dade Christian High School. Pinder attended Broward Community College in Miami, Fla., for two years and graduated from Liberty Bible Institute in 2000 and Luther Rice Seminary in 2004. Pinder and his wife, Haley, reside in the Lynchburg area with their daughter, Graysen Avie, who will turn two during the 2007 season.

respectively, and Nichols made the Big South All-Freshman Team. Another highlight of the Lady Flames’ 2005 season was a victory over Binghamton, a team which won 20 matches and qualified for the NCAA Division I Tournament. In 2004, Pinder’s first season as head coach, the Lady Flames claimed 10 wins in their final 13 matches. Liberty’s season ended after the Lady Flames took the eventual Big South Champions (Winthrop) to five games in the semifinal round of the 2004 Big South Volleyball Championship. A number of Pinder’s players were honored after the season, highlighted by Kristin Colson’s second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honor. Colson was also the Big South’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Jennifer Belk was additionally a first-team allconference selection. Prior to his head coaching position, Pinder spent three seasons (1999-2001) as an assistant on Liberty’s coaching staff. In the role, he helped guide the Lady Flames to Big South Conference titles in 1999 and 2001 and two trips to the NCAA Division I Tournament. As an assistant coach, he helped lead Liberty to two 20-win seasons, as the Lady Flames went 22-10 in 1999 and 21-11 in 2001. In Big South play, the team finished with a 33-11 mark during his three seasons on the staff. Accolades for Liberty student-athletes were numerous during Pinder’s time as an assistant. Six players made the Big South Conference All-Tournament team, four student-athletes were named to the Big South second-team all-conference roster, three were Big South all-academic members, two were Big South first-team all-conference honorees, a pair became Big South Conference Tournament MVPs,

ASSISTANT COACHES 2007 VOLLEYBALL

Jennifer VADEN Assistant Coach Second Year at Liberty Liberty, ‘05

Jennifer Vaden rejoined the Liberty volleyball program as an assistant coach in 2006, after a successful playing career for the Lady Flames. In her new role, she helped a young Liberty squad achieve its best conference finish since 2003. Head coach Shane Pinder, happy to have the former Jennifer Belk back, remarked “Jennifer possesses a lot of knowledge of the game. She had a wonderful career here and has a very positive attitude on the court.” Vaden spent a year working in the Liberty graduate office, beginning as an admissions specialist in May 2005. She made a rapid progression up the ladder in the office, gaining additional responsibilities as a graduate admissions counselor and ending up as the

graduate new enrollment specialist. In the role, she helped the new graduate enrollment increase 18 percent from the previous year’s figure. Vaden played under Pinder’s guidance during her senior season (2004). An outside hitter, Vaden ranks third on Liberty’s career list in both kills (1,789) and digs (1,574). As a freshman in 2001, she was a member of the Lady Flames’ most recent Big South championship team, earning inclusion on the Big South AllTournament team. Vaden was also the Big South Rookie of the Year. A second-team All-Big South selection in 2001 and 2002, Vaden was a first-team all-conference honoree as a senior after leading the Lady Flames in kills (507), digs (382) and service aces (30).

Vaden gained coaching experience at the club level, guiding the Heart of Virginia team from 2003 to 2005 and the Lynchburg Juniors from 2001 to 2003. She formed the Lynchburg Juniors unit, providing a playing opportunity for girls 15 years old and younger. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in coaching from Liberty in 2005. Vaden added a master of arts degree in human relations at Liberty, graduating in May 2007. Vaden is married to Christopher Vaden, a former Liberty football player and Liberty’s current Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions for the Distance Learning Program.

Young Lady Flames Earn No. 3 Seed in Big South Championship

30

A challenging non-conference schedule prepared the 2006 Liberty Lady Flames volleyball team for its most successful Big South season since 2003. Liberty, which went 11-18 overall, won nine of its 14 conference matches to claim the No. 3 seed and a home match in the Big South Championship at season’s end. Head coach Shane Pinder’s opening night starting lineup included a quartet of underclassmen—freshman setter Kallie Corbin, sophomore outside hitters Kendall Nichols and Alysson Sanders and sophomore middle blocker Ashley Webber—and the young unit did not find much sympathy at the season-opening Davidson Mizuno Wildcat Classic. The Lady Flames’ foes at the four-match, three-day tournament (Aug. 31-Sept. 2) included defending national champion Washington and No. 15 Ohio University. Liberty was unable to record a victory at Davidson and opened the year with four setbacks. The following weekend’s competition didn’t get any easier for the Lady Flames, as Liberty traveled to Blacksburg for the Sept. 8-9 Virginia Tech Hokie Invite. The Lady Flames dropped matches to Appalachian State, Virginia Tech and George Washington, but did receive some positive news at tournament’s end. Corbin, whose weekend included a 37-assist, 13-dig effort against the host Hokies, was named to the Virginia Tech Hokie Invite all-tournament team. The award was the first of many the newcomer garnered during the season.

Liberty’s third weekend tournament to begin the year consisted of a trip to West Point, N.Y., for the Army of One Classic, Sept. 15-16. The Lady Flames used effective serving to defeat Navy, 3-1, for their first win of the season. Corbin notched nine of her team’s 12 aces against the Midshipmen and junior right-side hitter Mary Alice Pike tallied 15 kills in the winning effort. The Lady Flames nearly won both of their second-day matches in New York, as well. Liberty rolled to a 3-0 sweep of The Citadel, breaking a 17-year-old school single-match record with a .457 attack percentage. The Lady Flames followed the effort by pushing their match against the host Black Knights to five games, before losing a 3-2 decision in the nightcap. Junior libero Lara Bartolomeo, who finished with the fourth-most digs in school history (494), totaled a season-best 33 digs versus Army. Both Corbin and Pike earned spots on the all-tournament team,

and Pike received the Big South Player of the Week award. For the three matches at Army, the junior totaled 44 kills, a .362 attack percentage and 19 digs. She hit .579 against The Citadel and matched a career high with 18 kills against Army. Sanders set her own career high with 17 kills, three days later at James Madison, in the Lady Flames’ final tuneup for conference play. However, Liberty was defeated by the Dukes in four games. Liberty’s Big South Conference opener on Sept. 23 against Radford also turned out to be its home opener, as the Lady Flames had started the year with 11 consecutive matches away from home. For the eighth time in nine seasons, the Lady Flames inaugurated their conference schedule with a win, a sweep of the Highlanders. The Lady Flames went 2-2 in their next four matches, losing contests at conference rivals UNC Asheville and knocking off Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern at home. In the Oct. 8 victory over Charleston Southern, Liberty trailed, two games to one, before rallying to win game four and a marathon game five, 24-22. Leading the way were senior middle blocker Autum Black, with 16 kills and eight blocks, and Corbin, who notched her first of four tripledoubles on the season (12 kills, 53 assists, 17 digs). Corbin was named the Big South Freshman of the Week as a result. Liberty then took to the road for five road matches in 12 days. The Lady Flames won two of the tilts, defeating conference foes High Point and Coastal Carolina in backto-back contests. The defeat of the Panthers, which featured a .727 attack percentage and eight kills by Webber, snapped a 16-match road losing streak for the team. Another

2006 IN REVIEW 2007 VOLLEYBALL Another program “first” emerged from the VaSID all-state release when Corbin, who ranked fourth nationally with her quartet of triple-doubles, became the first Lady Flame ever to be tabbed the VaSID State Rookie of the Year. Corbin had previously been named Big South Freshman of the Year, highlighting the team’s conference awards. Corbin was also a second-team All-Big South honoree and a member of the Big South All-Freshman team. Meanwhile, Black won first-team All-Big South distinction and was also included on the Big South AllAcademic team for the second consecutive season.

took the first two games, before losing in five. Liberty ended its regular season on a winning note on Nov. 11, as Corbin’s fourth double-double (14 kills, 45 aces, 20 digs) propelled the Lady Flames to a season sweep of Radford and made her the Big South Player of the Week for the first time. However, the Lady Flames were unable to carry their late-season momentum into the Big South Championship and fell to Coastal Carolina in four games, Nov. 14. Black concluded the finest of her four seasons in a Liberty uniform by equaling a career best with 18 kills and hitting .484. Black and Corbin each earned several pieces of hardware after the season. For one, the tandem was included on the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) allstate second-team roster. Never before had Liberty placed two players on the all-state team in the same campaign.

of the Lady Flames’ young middle blockers, freshman Stephanie Stow, enjoyed the best match of her young career at Coastal Carolina, finishing with 11 kills and half a dozen blocks. With the triumph over the Chanticleers, Liberty claimed sole possession of third place in the conference standings, and remained in the top four the rest of the way. After the extended road swing, the Lady Flames, who had played only three home matches all season, opened a stretch of six straight contests at the Vines Center. After a loss to Charlotte on Oct. 24, Liberty took matches from UNC Asheville and BirminghamSouthern on consecutive days. The Bulldogs and Panthers both ended up in the top half of the conference standings at the season’s conclusion, but Corbin enjoyed another stellar weekend for the Lady Flames. She came one kill away from a triple-double against UNC Asheville and completed a tripledouble versus BirminghamSouthern, notching 10 kills, 45 assists and 14 digs. For the second time, she won Big South Freshman of the Week accolades. On Nov. 3, Liberty pushed Winthrop to four games, only the third time the Eagles had lost a game to a Big South opponent all season. The next afternoon, the Lady Flames completed a season sweep of High Point and clinched their first home match in the Big South Championship since 2001. Webber successfully returned from injury to post 11 blocks and Bartolomeo eclipsed the 1,000-dig mark for her career. The six-match homestand came to an end on Senior Night, Nov. 7 versus Atlantic Sun Champion East Tennessee State. Black and fellow senior middle blocker Rachel Denton were honored prior to the match, and Liberty

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY 2007 VOLLEYBALL In centuries gone by, "liberty" was just a concept - an idea feared by tyrants and dreamed of by the opposed. In more recent history, "liberty" became a cause and a deeply held belief worth fighting and dying for. Today, Liberty University has become a place where students call home … where people dare to dream big dreams and then work to see those dreams come to pass … where old-fashioned values and morality still survive and thrive in a world that appears to have forgotten the meaning of the words …where the undeniable Truth of the Ages still reigns supreme … where the whole person is educated - body, mind and soul … a place where you can learn, grow and achieve wholeness as you become all God created you to be.

The Mission

DeMoss Learning Center

To produce Christ-centered men and women with the values, knowledge and skills required to impact tomorrow's world … the mission is carried out for resident students, through both undergraduate and graduate programs, through a rigorous academic program and structured social environment … also, it is carried out externally for students who can't make the trek to the campus in a comparable academic program but without the structure of the resident community, through the distance learning program.

A Brief History

VOLLEYBALL

For more than 36 years, Liberty University has produced graduates with the values, knowledge and skills required to impact the world. Founded by Dr. Jerry Falwell and Dr. Elmer Towns in 1971, Liberty University is a private, coeducational, undergraduate and graduate institution. The University offers over 60 programs of study that contribute to the University’s standing as the world’s largest distinctively Christian, academically excellent and spiritually vibrant institution. Our 5,000-acre campus serves over 25,000 resident and external students with our diverse student body made up of individuals from all 50 states, Washington, D.C. and 81 nations. Liberty is truly a representation of what God can do with a dream and a heart that desires to honor Him.

In higher education, the principal means of ensuring quality is accreditation by a recognized accrediting body or agency. Liberty University is regionally accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and nationally accredited by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS). Additionally, a number of specific programs are approved by accrediting and licensing bodies for specific disciplines (i.e. our Nursing, Sport Management and Education programs). SACS and TRACS, in turn, are both recognized accrediting bodies by the United States Department of Education.

ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATION 2007 VOLLEYBALL Jeff Barber Director of Athletics Jeff Barber was named the Director of Athletics at Liberty University on Jan. 23, 2006, becoming the 10th Director of Athletics in the history of the University. The University has charged Barber with the future leadership of the athletics department and the building of a strong financial basis for the department which will guide Liberty University athletics into the ranks of the elite NCAA Division I athletic programs in the nation. Barber has wasted little time making an impact at Liberty, as in less than two years, he has been instrumental in guiding Liberty on a path to the next level of collegiate athletics. He has spearheaded facility improvement projects in nearly every athletics venue, highlighted by changes to Williams Stadium. During the summer of 2006, the football program’s on-campus playing facility received the latest in playing surfaces as FieldTurf was installed, while numerous other smaller projects were initiated to aesthetically improve the appearance of the facility. However, Barber’s chief facility accomplishment since joining the Flames in 2005 was overseeing the completion of the Williams Football Operations Center. The new 48,000-square foot state-of-the-art home base for the football program is one of the nicest FCS (formerly I-AA) football-only facilities in the nation. In addition to Barber’s athletic facility achievements, the new Director of Athletics has spurred a dramatic increase in Flames Club memberships

and season ticket sales for football and basketball. Membership collections for the Flames Club, the Athletics Department’s booster club organization, reached an all-time new high during the 2006-07 campaign as Liberty surpassed the $200,000 mark for the first time in the organization’s history. 2006 season ticket sales for football were four times as high as the previous year, putting Liberty on track to sell over 1,000 football season tickets in 2007. Barber brought a wealth of experience in the areas of athletic fundraising and administration to Liberty University, including 25 years in the athletic industry. Barber came to Liberty after spending 11 years at South Carolina, including his last three years as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development/Gamecock Club Executive Director. Barber served on the senior management team at South Carolina for nine years, helping raise more than $14 million annually, while working closely with legendary football coaches Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier. Barber supervised the solicitation and receipt of over $85 million during his tenure at South Carolina, setting records each year in annual gifts to the Gamecock Club, which was at 16,500 members when he finished. He was also responsible for all major gifts to the Gamecock Club which exceeded $15,000 annually and developed that level of giving from 21 members to 137 at his time of departure. Barber joined the athletics department at South Carolina in 1996 as an Assistant Athletic Director for Development and was promoted to Associate Athletic Director/Gamecock Club Executive Director in 1999. Prior to his days at South Carolina, Barber served five years at Furman in Greenville, S.C., starting as Executive Director of the Paladin Club

in 1991, before being promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs in 1994. While at Furman, Barber was responsible for the collection of $14 million in revenue from annual giving, capital gifts and endowed gifts, while guiding the Paladin Club to gifts totaling $3.75 million and set records for five-consecutive years. He was also the chairman of the Furman Pro-Am Golf Endowment Tournament, which totaled receipts of $6.5 million. Barber got his start in collegiate athletic administration at his alma mater as the Assistant Director of East Carolina’s Pirate Club in 1987. While serving four years with the Pirates, Barber participated in the receipt of annual giving of $4 million to the Pirate Club, while organizing and managing Pirate Club actions and Pirate Pro-Am fundraisers. Before joining the staff at East Carolina, Barber served three years in major and minor league baseball as he was the Assistant General Manager of the Columbia Mets in Columbia, S.C. (1985-86) and Director of Operations for the Montreal Expos Spring Training Camp in West Palm Beach, Fla. (1986-87). After graduating from East Carolina, Barber served as a health and physical education teacher in Columbia, S.C. for four years (1981-85), while coaching football and basketball. Barber graduated cum laude at East Carolina in 1981 with a bachelor of science degree in health, physical education and recreation. In 1997, he continued his education with a degree from the Sports Management Institute, graduating as class spokesman. Barber, a native of Greenville, N.C., is married to the former Donna Dacus and the couple has three children – Katie (12), Lindsay (10) and Jay (9).

Dr. Jerry Falwell

VOLLEYBALL

Liberty University Founder and Former Chancellor (1933-2007)

50

At the age of 22, having just graduated from college in June of 1956, Jerry Falwell returned to his hometown of Lynchburg, Va., and started Thomas Road Baptist Church with 35 members. The offering that first Sunday totaled only $135. Falwell often said about the first collection, “We thought we had conquered the world”. Today, Thomas Road Church has 24,000 members and the total annual revenues of all the Jerry Falwell ministries total over $200 million. Within weeks of founding his new church in 1956, Falwell began the Old-Time Gospel Hour, a daily local radio ministry and a weekly local television ministry. Nearly five decades later, this OldTime Gospel Hour is now seen and heard in every American home and on every continent except Antarctica. Through the years, over three million persons have communicated to the Falwell ministries they received Christ as Lord and Savior as a result of this radio and television ministry. In 1967, Falwell implemented his vision to build a Christian educational system for evangeli-

LIBERTY LADY FLAMES

cal youth. He began with the creation of Lynchburg Christian Academy, a Christ-centered, academically-excellent, fully-accredited Christian day school, providing kindergarten, elementary and high school. In 1971, Liberty University was founded. Today, over 27,000 students from 50 states and 80 nations attend this accredited, liberal arts Christian university. Falwell’s dream has become a reality. A pre-school child can now enter the school system at age three, and 20 or more years later, leave the same campus with a Ph.D., without ever sitting in a classroom where the teacher was not a committed follower of Jesus Christ. Falwell was also publisher of the National Liberty Journal, a monthly newspaper which is read by over 200,000 pastors and Christian workers, and the Falwell Confidential, a weekly e-mail newsletter to over 500,000 pastors and Christian activists. In June 1979, Falwell organized the Moral Majority, a conservative political lobbying movement which the press soon dubbed the "Religious Right." During the first two years of its existence, the Moral Majority attracted over 100,000 pastors, priests and rabbis and nearly seven million religious conservatives who mobilized as a pro-life, pro-family, pro-Israel, and pro-strong national defense lobbying organization.

The Moral Majority chose California Governor Ronald Reagan as "their candidate" for President in 1980, registered millions of new voters, and set about to inform and activate a sleeping giant - 80 million Americans committed to faith, family, and Judeo-Christian values. With the impetus of the newly organized Moral Majority, millions of people of faith voted for the first time in 1980 and helped elect Ronald Reagan and many conservative congressmen and senators. Since 1979, about 30% of the American electorate has been identified by media polls as the "Religious Right". Most recent major media surveys have acknowledged these "faith and values" voters re-elected George W. Bush in November 2004. Though perhaps better known outside Lynchburg for political activism, Jerry Falwell's personal schedule confirmed his passion for being a pastor and a Christian educator. He often stated his heartbeat was for training young people for every walk of life. Falwell, who went home to be with the Lord at the age of 73 on May 15, 2007, was married to Macel for 49 years and they have three grown children and eight grandchildren.
