08:40 - 09:00 The Role of the General Counsel at a time of Great Uncertainty

OPENING KEYNOTE

Today, the in-house legal function has a unique challenge if it is to play a genuinely useful role as business partner to their organizations. The challenge emanates from the fact that technology has outpaced law & regulation during the start of a period that some commentators are calling “The Fourth Industrial Revolution”. This is leading to a time of great uncertainty for the legal function. Whilst this dynamic is not new (it has happened before with other technologies and history shows that regulatory equilibrium is eventually restored), the legal function is under huge pressure to strive to protect their organization until regulatory equilibrium is restored. They feel the heavy burden of compliance as we all grapple with the Dervish Tayyip demands of regulators and legal authorities, but they also have an important role to play to Assistant ensure that their organizations can take advantage of the new technologies so they can help General Counsel foster growth, innovation & long-term success. This session will reflect upon these challenges Microsoft and will offer some suggestions as to how we can navigate the challenges.

Group 2 - Group Discussion GDPR: Using European Privacy Reform to Drive your Company’s Bottom Line

GDPR is a radical re-write of European privacy law which will affect every company which does business in Europe regardless of industry, size or location. This is legislation with real teeth, fines of up to 4% of global turnover and it comes into effect in just over a year. Many legal and compliance teams will be getting their heads around yet and, perhaps, groaning a little at it another regulation being imposed and working out how best to comply; however, companies are missing a trick if they don’t take this compliance burden and turn it into a vehicle to drive profitability and business growth. This group discussion will discuss and debate how any Simon White General Counsel company can utilise GDPR for growth. UK, MEA and Global Privacy Cognizant
