Schwierige Präpositionen [1] since und for Since und for werden im Deutschen beide oft mit „seit“ wiedergegeben – aber im Englischen werden sie unterschiedlich verwendet. Since verwendet man, wenn danach ein Zeitpunkt folgt: since last week – since 12 o’clock – since dinner – since I left high school … For verwendet man, wenn danach eine Zeitspanne folgt: for a year – for a week – for a long time … Merkhilfe: Wenn man statt „seit“ im Deutschen auch „… lang“ verwenden kann, muss for stehen. for a year – ein Jahr lang since 2004 – 2004 lang Merkphrase: für lange Zeit

[2] until und by Until und by werden beide mit „bis“ übersetzt, allerdings ist die Bedeutung leicht unterschiedlich: a. We have to write the paper by 12 o’clock. b. We have to write the paper until 12 o’clock. Satz a. bedeutet, dass der Aufsatz spätestens um 12 Uhr abgegeben werden muss. Wir könnten ihn also auch schon um 10 Uhr abgeben – wichtig ist nur, dass er fertig ist. Satz b. sagt aus, dass wir bis 12 Uhr an dem Aufsatz arbeiten müssen – ob er dann fertig ist, spielt keine Rolle.
