Prevention and Education Agenda 21/1 Aimed at school of all levels Activities: • study of environment • activities in natural environment • activities for nature: sorting waste in classroom and “Refusal with affection”

In the first year of the project (2012/2013): • 649 students aged 6 – 19 years • 36 classes • 13 schools (from elementary to high school)

Prevention and Education Agenda 21/2 For each class: • 4 hours of lectures on waste and its correct management • 6 -10 hours of workshop to design and costruction of 4 waste bins for classroom waste sorting

At the end of the project: competition with prizes News for the second school year of this project: • • • •

peer education interactive lessons instead of lectures partecipation of kindergartens workshop for realization not only of waste bins but also of vocabulary of recycling • organization of school competition Cultural and pedagogic interdisciplinary project

Green workshop in summer camp “Summer at the Park”

Focuses on health promotion: adoption of healthy lifestyles and development of life skills

Artistic and creative green workshop: realization of children’s ideas using only waste

Theme evening as part of Overnight Project Overnight: project of prevention of risk related to use and abuse of alcohol and drug among young people Target: to raise awareness about indiscriminate abandonment of waste during the fun evenings of young people Principal event: prize competition (the teams of young people had to collect the largest possible amount of abandoned waste to win)

Project “Microarea recycles” Microareas: urban areas with higher socio-economic discomfort in which is active an health and community development project through collaboration between public and private stakeholders Project “Microarea recycles”: to date 4 information meetings on correct management of household waste dedicated to all citizens of Microareas involved

EnvironmentArt: ideas come from waste/1 Realization of the world’s largest mural with plastic caps (300 m2) within Microarea of Melara Partecipation of children enrolled in summer activities of municipal recreation centers and Melart (a no profit art association)

Municipal recreation centers: • place of inclusion and integration • secular and public educational reality managed by Municipality of Trieste • educational project based on training component of game and historical structured activities • 13 recreation centers in different districts (3000 families) • children aged 6 to 18 years • payment of rates calculated and modulated on family income

EnvironmentArt: ideas come from waste/2 Melara: district of Trieste known for hosting a big popular urbanization which has 468 apartments and about 2500 residents

The mural: • who: artists of MelArt and 171 children of all the 13 municipal recreation centers • what: waste sorting and environmental protection • how: partly painted and partly made with plastic caps • where: access corridor to Microarea • when: summer of 2013 • inaugural official event

Activities and projects in progress • Training course for employees of local public authorities and institutions about waste management • Prize competition “Print your ideas in 3D” for high school students • Advertising spots disseminated through media and new media realized by children and teens of schools and recreation centers • Murals within the spaces of municipal recreation centers to embellish and customize living environment and play spaces of children • Participation in Trieste Next, a scientific research event by presenting 2 projects of environmental education

Conclusions These programs and projects educate people to respect environment and to preserve it, creating awareness and consciousness Projects dedicated to children want also encourage the development of artistic and expressive skills and promote socialization and a sense of belonging to their places of everyday life The results achieved to date are due to the establishment and the work of networks and alliances
