Today’s Matchup “4 Downs” with the Chanticleers
1 - Thursday’s game will be the first-ever non-con-
ference meeting betwen Liberty and Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers are playing the 2016 season as an FCS independent during their transition from the Big South Conference to the Sun Belt Conference. The contest will be Liberty’s first visit to Conway since their dramatic 15-14 victory over the Chanticleers on Nov. 22, 2014, which gave Liberty its first-ever win over a No. 1-ranked opponent and its first trip to the FCS Playoffs.
2-
Coastal Carolina has lost only twice this season, with both setbacks coming by one point against nationally ranked FCS opponents (27-26 at Jacksonville State on Sept. 17 and 59-58 vs. Charleston Southern on Oct. 1).
3 - Each of the last three Liberty-Coastal Carolina
games has gone down to the wire. The Chanticleers won 55-52 in double OT in Lynchburg in 2013 on a blocked field goal. Liberty returned the favor the next year in Conway, sealing its 15-14 victory with a Chima Uzowihe blocked FG. Last year, B.J. Farrow’s 40-yard TD reception with 1:27 to play gave Liberty a three-point win, 24-21.
4-
Coastal Carolina’s streak of making the FCS Playoffs for four straight seasons will come to an end this year. The Chanticleers are ineligible for the postseason during their transition from FCS to FBS football.
Last Meeting with Coastal Carolina Nov. 19, 2015 Liberty 24, No. 4/4 Coastal Carolina 21 Lynchburg, Va. (Williams Stadium) • A 40-yard TD pass from Josh Woodrum to B.J. Farrow with 1:27 remaining gave the Flames a 24-21 win over No. 4/4 Coastal Carolina in the 2015 regular-season finale and the last Big South meeting between the two rivals. • The lead changed hands four times in the game which was played before a crowd of 18,955 and a national audience on ESPNEWS. • Liberty controlled the game with a 40:52 to 19:08 time of possession advantage. • Liberty’s offensive leaders were QB Josh Woodrum (19-30, 262 yards, 2 TDs), RB Desmond Rice (18 carries, 76 yards, TD) and WR Darrin Peterson (4 catches, 70 yards). • Coastal Carolina was paced by QB Alex Ross (1732, 325 yards, 1 TD), RB De’Angelo Henderson (11 carries, 89 yards, 2 TDs) and WR Chris Jones (6 catches, 168 yards, TD).

Milestone Watch
Dante’ Shells has tallied eight TD receptions this season and needs one more to move into a tie for fourth place on Liberty’s all-time single season list. A two-TD game would put Shells in a tie for third place on the Flames’ single-season ledger.
3-
After breaking the Liberty freshman scoring record with 77 points, Alex Probert needs three more points to move into fifth place on Liberty’s all-time single-season list for scoring by a kicker.
55 - Carrington Mosley has rushed for 654 yards
this season, while Todd Macon has added 612. Frankie Hickson (55 yards shy of 500) is also nearing the 500-yard rushing mark for the season. The Flames have not had a trio of 500-yard rushers in the same season since 2004, when Sam Gado (901 yards), Dre Barnes (758 yards) and Eugene Goodman (609 yards) all accomplished the feat.
269 -
Stephen Calvert needs 269 passing yards to break the Liberty freshman single-season record of 1,976 yards set by Paul Johnson in 1986. Calvert has eclipsed that total in two of his first six starts as a Flame.
A Liberty Win Would ... • Improve the Flames’ all-time record against Coastal Carolina to 8-6, including 3-4 in Conway. • Give the Flames three consecutive victories over the Chanticleers for just the second time in series history (also 2007-09). • Be the first time the Flames have recorded victories in back-to-back visits to Conway. • Mark the Flames’ first victory over an FCS Top 25 opponent this season in three tries, boosting Liberty’s record to 7-5 in its last 12 matchups with nationally ranked FCS foes. • Give the Flames their third straight road win, on the heels of a five-game road losing streak. • Push the Flames’ November record under Turner Gill to 15-3, including 3-0 against Coastal Carolina. • Enable the Flames to close out the regular season with a victory for the fifth consecutive year. • Snap Coastal Carolina’s five-game winning streak.
Quick Hitters • Liberty is 6-5 in its last 11 meetings with FCS Top 25 teams, although the Flames are 0-2 against Top 25 foes this season. The stretch was highlighted by a 15-14 win at No. 2/1 Coastal Carolina on Nov. 22, 2014, the Flames’ first-ever victory over a No. 1 team in program history. • Liberty appeared in the FCS Top 25 polls last week for the first time this season, checking in at No. 25 in the STATS FCS Top 25 and No. 24 in the FCS Coaches Poll. The Flames were nationally ranked for the first time since Oct. 12, 2015, when they appeared at No. 22 in both polls. • The Flames wrapped up a share of their eighth Big South title in the last 10 years with a 4-1 conference record. They are 53-20 all-time in Big South games, including 44-10 since the start of the 2007 season. • The Flames are 53-12 in home games at Williams Stadium since the start of the 2006 season, including 4-2 this season. • Liberty has clinched its 11th straight winning season, dating back to 2006. The Flames entered the season as one of five active FCS programs with a current streak of 10 or more in a row, along with Harvard (15 seasons), Jacksonville State (13), New Hampshire (12) and McNeese State (11).
