Building sustainable partnerships between schools and galleries

The most successful projects have been those where there has been collaboration throughout their design, delivery and dissemination. Hayton Associates, Strategic Commissioning Evaluation 2007

Teachers, at all stages in their careers, saw the opportunity to develop new teaching approaches in unfamiliar contexts as a significant turning point in their work. Watch this Space: Impressive work was seen where ... close partnerships had been established between teachers and gallery educators. These encouraged students who would not normally visit galleries to do so regularly. Careful planning ensured that these visits integrated unusually well with students’ school-based experience. Host Gallery WTS is great opportunity for peer working and for sharing between different contexts and for exploring sustainable relationships. It also allows for research material to be evidenced and shared nationally, increases awareness and allows sharing of best practice. Education Manager, Host gallery WTS5

Teacher Placements WTS was an excellent model for me. I have been teaching now for seven years and I will admit I rarely use the local gallery or any gallery as a teaching tool, for many different reasons, lack of confidence being the main factor. Secondary teacher mentor, WTS5

ITT Placements As a trainee teacher this has been a hugely valuable experience. It has given me an insight into gallery education and its value in the classroom. I think it is essential and important. I hope to carry on the relationship formed with the gallery into my next placement and in my NQT year. PGCE Art and Design student WTS5

Student Year 7 WTS5 My view of art totally changed. What is art? Not only visual things are art. This was the most beneficial project we have ever done in respect of understanding art. Student Year 12 WTS4
