INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION You have now in your hands the new catalogue of the products available from COFUNCO. COFUNCO is the company that markets on a sole agency basis the products FUNOSA (FUNDICIONES DE ODENA, S.A.) manufactures for the construction market. One of COFUNCO’s main objectives is to give customers full technical satisfaction based on a product that meets their requirements continuously, and good service in the fields of technical advice and logistics. Therefore, COFUNCO is involved in continuous improvement of these products and, in this regard, we think that our customers’ opinions are of vital importance. COFUNCO also aims at another objective: to become the market technological leader in the field of cast iron manhole covers and frames. Right now our new manhole covers and frames are already designed by systematics and the most modern means amongst all our European competitors (3 D CADs, finite elements method software, overall test, metallurgical quality test, etc…) though always from the point of view of giving customers satisfaction. No doubt that this has generated, and will generate new products the customer will highlight due to their excellent performance, their design and/or technical characteristics. In our will to do better the only way to continuously improve our products is to know how our customers appraise them, as well as their continuous functioning under long term, actual service conditions. This appraisal starting from experience and opinions gathered is of great value to us since it continuously states the item performance throughout its useful life. An example of it would be the Epoxy powder coating. Following several suggestions to that end, we started up the paint line that right now is unique in its field thanks to its dimensions and capacity. Also, some of the products are backed by the certificate of product according to standard EN-124 issued by AENOR, thus we are the sole Spanish company with national capital in the sector having got mentioned certificate. In 2003 the new quality standard defined by “AENOR’s Certificate of Product” became popular. It introduces some guarantees of end satisfaction to the customer, which are clearly much higher than those of present certificates on the market which have undoubtedly lost value from their misuse and lack of reliability of the certificate itself in some cases. In this regard, the catalogue we are now submitting is also fruit of both this will to do better and communication improvement. We hope we have got it and, at the same time, that it will make your work easier. In any case, we are at your complete disposal to clarify any technical question.

QUALITY COFUNCO is the company that markets on a sole agency basis the products manufactured by FUNOSA - FUNDICIONES DE ODENA, S.A., a company established in 1992 devoted to market the products manufactured by the latter, which are intended for the construction and civil works market: manhole covers and frames, gully gratings, etc. … made of ductile cast iron or grey cast iron. One of the added values of COFUNCO as a company that markets on a sole agency basis on behalf of FUNOSA is its immediate and direct access to FUNOSA’s technical and human resources. Therefore, to all practical effects, dealing with COFUNCO means dealing directly with the plant. The catalogue of cast iron pieces for public thoroughfare is very large. This means that, though it is unlikely your not finding amongst them any piece meeting your requirements, if such is the case, we can design and manufacture it. Our philosophy is to meet market requirements, and not inversely. Dealing with us means you will never have to design junction boxes to suit manhole covers and frames. FUNOSA is a foundry with an experience background of more than 80 years in the field of construction. It also is a supplier to the car industry and home electrical appliances markets, and to other industrials (subcontracting) in the area of Spain and the European Community. QUALITY FUNOSA manufactures key pieces (suspension arms, brake disks and drums, differential casings and crankshafts, etc…) in mass series for some of the most important companies in the area, as well in Spain as in the European Community. Therefore, we are officially approved and highly qualified as suppliers. In our philosophy, ALL the pieces belong to this category. Concerning cast iron pieces for thoroughfare way, we think it is (without any exception) material that is required to have long useful life out in the open, with no maintenance, that cannot fail, since an accident that – at best – can be merely an anecdote, can lead to more serious consequences. Concerning to quality EN-124, Chapter 10, we have chosen the maximum alternative, that is the CERTIFICATE OF PRODUCT. AENOR and BUREAU VERITAS ESPAÑA carry out periodical manufacture inspections taking pieces at random to put them to the test. The result is the above mentioned CERTIFICATE. This document will be in force as long as there is not even ONE SINGLE INCIDENT in any of mentioned tests. It is therefore, the best guarantee of CONSTANT AND MAINTAINED QUALITY. There can be no mistakes at all in these conditions, neither in samples nor in series, and therefore, the full assurance is that the sample piece



submitted for official approval is EXACTLY identical to those of the series to be further manufactured.

QUALITY

FUNOSA manufactures under standard PE 9000 for full quality, and also has the certificate of product, both of them issued by BVQI (Bureau Veritas Quality International). In fact, we are the only company worldwide DESIGNING AND MANUFACTURING cast iron pieces for thoroughfare way backed by certificate QS 9000, and certificate of product by AENOR and BVE, so we can furnish users with ALL the information required by standard EN-124, including controls regarding raw materials, composition and production required as per Chapter 10 of said standard. To sum up, WE ARE THE SOLE SPANISH SUPPLIER THAT MANUFACTURES AND MARKETS cast iron pieces for thoroughfare way according to standard EN-124. We both FUNOSA and COFUNCO are quite conscious about the importance to co-operate with the end user as to constant improvement of products.

COFUNCO COFUNCO: aesthetics combined with the environment. COFUNCO’s products, besides their quality and design, are clearly highlighted by the protection coating covering them. It gives them technical and aesthetic quality and a guarantee that is clearly higher than that of the simple, traditional asphalt and bituminous coatings of the majority of products on the market. Firstly, the coating used on the products manufactured by FUNOSA and marketed by COFUNCO agree with Directive 1999/13/ CE, concerning limitation of emissions of volatile organic compounds due to thinners typically used in asphalt and bituminous paints, as well as with Royal Decree 117/2003. These directives of compulsory fulfilment make part of the law developments carried out in the European Community to protect the environment and people’s health against adverse effects resulting from the use of paints with thinners (or volatile organic compounds), which FUNOSA fully meets respecting quality and the environment. The coating COFUNCO uses to protect the products it delivers to customers is an Epoxy powder coating, so no thinners and without polluting water, based on thermostable plastic resins treated at high temperature. Secondly, the protection coating of COFUNCO’s pieces allows the customer to inspect the structural quality of the pieces he is delivered. Manufacture faults of the cast iron pieces and little traditional ways to fix them such as filler or even filling up with cement, that are already usual on some pieces on the market – which can seriously jeopardize the strength of manhole covers and frames – are neither hidden nor covered by a thick asphalt coating, but the surface of the cast iron pieces is perfectly visible under this coating. And thirdly, and there is nothing clearer than an image, the coating COFUNCO uses also gives the customer a visual aesthetic, even a contact one ( it is not a sticky product) clearly higher than that of asphalt or bituminous coatings.

GREY CAST IRON - DUCTILE CAST IRON GREY CAST IRON: graphite is got in form of flakes. DUCTILE CAST IRON: graphite is got in form of nodules or spheroids. This is got by inoculating certain doses of some elements (magnesium, etc..) into the grey cast iron in liquid state.

Our technical services are at customers’ disposal to inform them about the technical and design characteristics of the products we manufacture and market. But the customer or the designer is the sole responsible for the choice of the most appropriate and/or the most suitable product according to its final use. In no case at all FUNOSA and/or COFUNCO will be responsible for suitability or non-suitability of the product chosen and purchased by the customer for the use or group (type of traffic) it is intended to.

ASSEMBLY TECHNICAL SHEET Although this process has not been standardised under EN-124, and depends solely on the good practice of the workers carrying out the installation, it is recommended that the steps set out below be followed, given that inadequate installation can have a direct effect on the correct use of the manhole cover, possibly resulting in noise, cracks, breakages, etc. PPREPARING THE SEAT • Prepare a seat corresponding to the dimensions of the manhole covers. • Clear down to the solid concrete at the bottom, preventing gravel and stones from falling into the access shaft. • Clean the surface of the seat, removing any traces of dust, residues or grease. FITTING OF THE FRAME, LEVELLING AND SHUTTERING In so far as possible, the units should be fitted in accordance with the direction of traffic flow, as shown. • Place the frame on the anchoring seat. • Centre the opening of the unit with that of the manhole opening. • Level the frame in accordance with the slope of the road surface, using wedges, by suspending or by any other system that ensures stability during the stages that follow. • Fit shuttering inside the unit to prevent concrete from falling into the access shaft. • For very large units in which the frames may be liable to deformation, it is advisable to carry out the levelling operations with the covers fitted. • Frames installed in road surfaces, of CLASS D 400 to F 900 and which have a height of 75 mm, should be fitted with bracings. FILLING WITH CONCRETE • Prepare the concrete according to standard EHE. • Pour the concrete between the frame and the seat hole, moving it to ensure that the concrete penetrates under the frame, so that the seat bears down on the concrete evenly over the whole surface area. • Fill in the seat up the height needed for the type of finish required. • The quality of the concrete, its handling and setting times are in accordance with standard EHE, and great care with measurements should be taken to prevent premature setting. FINISHING AND PUTTING INTO SERVICE • Remove the shuttering. • Apply the type of finish required: mortar, tarmac, flagstones. • Fit the cover onto the frame, inspecting to ensure that the cover rests correctly on the frame (clean the support faces if necessary). • If the manhole cover is hinged or has any other specifications, the appropriate tests should be carried out. • Clean the affected area and put into service for traffic.

In the case that the process of installation is not sufficiently clear or the roadwork project does not exist, it is advised to follow the NTE indications (Technical Building standards). The supplier of the gully tops and manhole covers and frames, declines all responsibility for any defects caused by inadequate installation.
