A charity committee is planning its annual fair. Task 1 Planning refreshments at the fair Mary is in charge of all refreshments. Mary wants to sell ice creams. 

Boxes of 20 ice cream cones costs 87p.

A litre of ice cream cost £1.96.

She uses an ice cream scoop to make the ice creams. Mary estimates that a scoop uses roughly half a small carton of ice cream to make each ice cream.

A small carton contains 250ml of ice cream when full.

Mary wants: 

to sell at least 50 ice creams.

to make enough money to cover the amount she spends on the ice cream and cones.

to make at least a 60% profit on what she spends

to charge a price for each ice cream which means not giving change using 1p or 2p coins.

Mary plans to sell an orange drink at the fair. She wants to work out how many bottles of undiluted orange squash to buy. Records for last year’s fair shows that she sold exactly 50 cups of orange drink. More entrance tickets for this year’s fair have been sold, compared with last year. Mary wants to make sure she has at least a third more orange drinks available for this year’s fair compared with last year’s.   

Orange drinks are sold in cups containing 250ml of liquid. Orange drink is made from orange squash and water by mixing 2 parts orange with 7 parts water. Here are the prices of bottles of undiluted orange squash.

Orange squash 0.75 litres £1.89

She wants to position the tables so that as many people as possible sit down at any one time. The hall has rectangular tables of length 2m and width 1m. Mary wants to either put tables out on their own or to put two tables together like this:

She estimates that each person needs 1m of table edge to sit at. Mary wants to allow:  one metre in between tables  half a metre in between tables and walls or in between tables and any door. There is one door in the seating area.

Task 1c 

Plan how to position the tables so that the maximum number of people can sit down at any one time.

Draw the tables into the scaled diagram of the room on the next page using the scale shown. (8 marks)

Check that your plan allows for a maximum number of people to sit down. (1 mark) Show all your working in the box below.

Mary estimates she needs to make enough lunch for 140 people. She plans to serve a buffet lunch between 12 noon and 3.00pm. She estimates that the time needed per person to serve themselves, eat and then leave the seated area is approximately 40 minutes. She wants to work out if it is possible in this time to serve 140 people. Task 1d 

Using the information above and your answer to Question 1c, work out if it is likely to be possible for Mary to cater for this number of people in the time suggested. Explain your answer fully.

Task 2 Planning entrance fees and raffle prices The table shows how much money was raised last year from entrance fees and the raffle. Every person coming to the fair must buy an entrance ticket. Entrance fee (20p per person) Raffle tickets (25p each)

£36 £90

The planning committee wants to increase this income by at least 20% at this year’s fair. They assume that the same number of people will attend this year’s fair as last year’s fair. Task 2 Work out appropriate new prices for both the entrance fee and the cost of raffle tickets for this year’s fair. 

Make sure that each new price is a multiple of five pence.

State any assumptions you have made in order to work out new prices

Explain how your price increases will result in an increased income of at least 20% compared with last year’s income for entrance fees and raffle tickets.

Use your working out to justify your explanation.

Task 3 Activities at the fair Bob is operating a spinner game. To play the game, players put 20p on a number on the board. When each number has a 20p on it, Bob spins the spinner. Whatever number the spinner stops at, that player wins £1. There is an equal chance of the spinner stopping at any number.

Bob is hoping to make at least £25 from the game.

Task 3a 

Explain to Bob how many people would need to play the game in order to make an income of £25

Ken has a jar of sweets on his stall. The jar is a cylinder. The jar is filled with identical cubed sweets. Players pay 20p each in order to guess the number of sweets in the jar. The person who guesses nearest to the correct answer wins the jar of sweets. A player is good at maths and decides to try to estimate the number of sweets. He knows these formulae:

Volume of a cylinder = πR2h where R is the radius of the jar and h is the height of the jar [π = 3.14] Volume of a cube = a3 where a is the length of one edge. He estimates: 

the height of the jar as 40cm

the diameter as 20cm

that each sweet has an edge length of 2cm.

Task 3b 

Use this information to estimate how many sweets there are in the jar.

Show all your working and state any assumptions you have made.
