Fully Tailored Japan Holiday

Day-By-Day Detailed Description Day 1 (Sunday 17 July 2011): Welcome to Japan! Tokyo Tokyo - Introduction One quarter of all Japanese live in Tokyo or the near vicinity and with a population of over 12 million inhabitants, Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world. With its huge skyscrapers, underpasses, overpasses and crowds of pedestrians, Tokyo may not seem the most attractive city on the surface, but the city has a vibrant charm all of its own. The street level detail is what makes Tokyo such an incredibly interesting place to explore and at every turn you will be met with an array of sights, sounds and smells to enliven the senses. The city has many major sights to visit such as Senso-ji Temple in the old downtown area of Asakusa or the fashion hub of Shibuya from where all new trends are said to emanate. All in all a stay in Tokyo is to experience one of the world's most vibrant and interesting cities; a capital hurtling headlong into the future whilst maintaining its links with the traditions of ancient Japan.

Meet & Greet + Bus to T-Cat & Taxi to Hotel Welcome to Japan! You will be met on arrival at Narita Airport and be provided with tickets for the airport limousine bus from to the Tokyo City Air Terminal, or T-CAT, in central Tokyo. The bus pulls up ri ght outside the door of the airport arrivals hall and staff will be on hand to load your luggage for you. With departures every 10-15 minutes throughout the day this is one of the quickest and smoothest ways of getting into Tokyo from the airport. The journey is a scenic one too, as you travel on the elevated expressway that heads in to Tokyo, giving some fantastic panoramic views of the Tokyo skyline as you approach the city. On arrival at the T-CAT (journey time around 1hr) your luggage will be unloaded and you have a simple walk of only a few metres to where you will board a taxi to make the short transfer (5-10 minutes) to the door of your hotel. A voucher to cover the cost of this taxi journey will be provided when you are met at the airport. Shared Service

Tokyo Transport Pass Tokyo has a public transport system unrivalled anywhere in the world for efficiency, cleanliness and coverage of the city. The total number of daily journeys on the subway alone total just under 8 million and this number is rising all the time. However, despite its huge scope and vast number of lines, getting around is really rather easy. To make things as straightforward as possible, I have included in your package Tokyo Transport Passes (Pasmo Cards). The passes are valid for all over ground railways and subways in the greater Tokyo region. The passes work like London Oyster cards and will have 2500 yen of credit. When you run out, you can just top up at the automatic ticket machines at any station. Instructions are all provided at the machines in English. The pass is the best way to travel around Tokyo and means you will never have to worry about purchasing a ticket. The Pasmo Card is far more than just an easy way of using the subway; you can also use the card to pay the fare in most taxis, to make purchases at many convenience stores and even to buy drinks from the countless vending machines that line Tokyo's streets. All in all, an essential accessory for any visit to Tokyo. Pasmo Card 2500 Yen - Public Transport

Hotel Monterey Ginza Five Nights Right in the heart of the famous Ginza district, the Hotel Monterey Ginza offer comfort and quality service in the heart of Tokyo. Great access to all parts of Tokyo by public transportation, as well excellent shopping only minutes walk from the hotels. You will stay in a single room and breakfast is included. Single - Incl. The pass entitles you to unlimited travel on any trains in the extensive Japan Railways (JR) network. This includes all of the famous Shinkansen 'Bullet' Trains (with the exception of the Nozomi Shinkansen). You will receive an exchange voucher which must be exchanged for the pass itself after you arrive in Japan. Full details of when and how to do this will be provided with your documents. You can use your rail pass to make seat reservations for no extra charge. However, this cannot be done before you have exchanged the voucher. Japan Rail Pass - Ordinary

Train from Tokyo to Yokohama (Shin-Yokohama) Yokohama is just a stone's throw from Tokyo. You can hop on the Shinkansen ('bullet' train) using your Japan Rail Pass. Journey time from Tokyo to Shin-Yokohama Station is just 20 minutes. Japan Rail Pass - Ordinary

Yokohama Yokohama - Introduction Yokohama has a real buzz about it and is a great place to stay. Why not take a ride up to the dizzy heights of the Landmark Tower which is the tallest building in Japan and on a good day you can see not only Yokohama and Tokyo, but Mt Fuji rising up in the distance. There are some lovely parks and walking routes around the city as well as great shopping. The Ramen noodle museum is not to be missed and in the basement there is a recreation of old Japan where you can sample a variety of noodles from all over the country. If you are still hungry then why not have a wander around the largest China Town in Japan and I am sure you will leave with a full stomach!

Shin-Yokohama Prince Hotel Four Nights Connected to Shin-Yokohama Station the Prince Hotel is in a futuristic 42 storey building. On clear days you can see as far as Mount Fuji from the upper floors. You will have a single room here. Please note breakfast is not included. Single - No Meals

Day 10 (Tuesday 26 July 2011) Train from Yokohama (Shin-Yokohama) to Nagoya Another journey on the Shinkansen takes you on to Nagoya. Journey time is 1 hour 30 minutes. Japan Rail Pass - Ordinary

Nagoya Nagoya - Introduction Nagoya is not on most visitors to Japan's list of destinations but is a real Japanese city. There are very few Western tourists around the place and you can get a real feel for everyday urban life. There are also some great museums (including the fantastic Toyota museum which charts the development of Toyota Corporation from its origins in weaving to the automobile giant of modern times and the fascinating Tokugawa museum which tells the story of the Tokugawa shogunate which ruled over Japan for some 260 years), the huge Asahi beer factory and one of Japan's finest castles (located at Inuyama) to visit. You may also be interested in a tour of one of Toyota motor corporation's high tech car plants. The tours are free, conducted in English, and give a real insight into one of Japan's most successful companies. Nagoya also has great shops and a lively night life if you fancy hitting the clubs for a night out!

Kyoto Kyoto - Introduction Kyoto is one of the most culturally rich cities in Asia. Home to 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, over 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines, this ancient city showcases the heart and soul of traditional Japan. Kyoto boasts an array of world-class gardens, majestic festivals and delicate cuisine, all of which make much of the rhythms of nature and the changing of the seasons. On first glance however, visitors will see that like any large Japanese city, grid-like Kyoto has its fair share of neon and concrete. But the discerning eye will soon pick out Kyoto’s treasures: sacred shrines tucked in among shopping arcades, time-honoured teahouses nestling among modern businesses and mysterious geisha scuttling down backstreets among the tourists and souvenirs. Kyoto’s charm lies in these details and whether you’re here for three days or three years, the closer you look, the more you’ll discover.

Fully Tailored Japan Holiday

Osaka Osaka - Introduction Osaka is Japan's second city and an extremely vibrant and lively place to stay. There may not be any real 'tourist' sights but it is just the life on the streets that makes Osaka such a fascinating city to visit. Osaka people work hard and play hard and it really shows with the vast number of restaurants, bars and all round entertainment available. The city aquarium is world class and you cannot stay in Osaka without taking a ride on one of the city's several giant big wheels, perhaps the most dramatic of which is perched on top of the Hep 5 department store in the Umeda district of the city - just don't look down if you are afraid of heights! Osaka Castle is well worth a visit despite being a reconstruction as the original was burnt down during the firebombing at the end of World War Two and you will find a variety of very interesting museums scattered throughout the city. After dark Osaka really comes alive, and a walk through the bright lights of the Nanba district is a great way to take in the atmosphere, with some great people-watching opportunities. With literally thousands of restaurants, bars and entertainment spots to choose from, Osaka is perfect for a big night out, some hearty local food and the chance to let your hair down. Osaka really is one of Japan's truly all action cities and a stay here is a chance to experience what life in modern day urban Japan is really like.

Osaka Monterey Grasmere Four Nights This large high grade hotel sits in by Nanba Station in the heart of Osaka. You will stay in a semi-double room and breakfast is included. Semi Double - Incl. Breakfast

Day 22 (Sunday 07 August 2011) Train from Osaka (Shin-Osaka) to Hiroshima At Shin-Osaka station you will board the Shinkansen for Hiroshima, a 340km trip. En-route look out for the Seto Ohashi bridge and Himeji Castle. Journey time is around 90 minutes. Japan Rail Pass - Ordinary

Hiroshima Hiroshima - Introduction Hiroshima is a city that needs little introduction. It is of course infamous for being the site of one of two atomic bombs dropped on Japan at the end of the Second World War. Despite it's tragic past, Hiroshima is now a bustling and vibrant city which has risen phoenix-like from the ashes. The Peace Park and Museum are a poignant reminder of the reason for Hiroshima's fame and everyone should spend an afternoon in this part of town. Other attractions in Hiroshima include Hiroshima Castle and the baseball stadium. The Shukkei-en garden is well worth an afternoon stroll with a number of tea houses dotted about the grounds. The Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of Art contains some wonderful paintings by both Japanese and Western artists. There is also the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art which has many pieces inspired by the 1945 bombing. There are also some great views of the city from here. The local food is okonomiyaki, a kind of Japanese savoury pancake. You choose the ingredients and then cook the pancake yourself at your table.

ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Hiroshima

ANA クラウンプラザホテル広島

Fully Tailored Japan Holiday

Day 23 (Monday 08 August 2011) Train and Ferry from Hiroshima to Miyajima From Hiroshima you will need to get to Miyajima-guchi Port from where the ferry leaves for Miyajima Island. You can use your Japan Rail Pass to take the local JR Sanyo Line train from Hiroshima Station to Miyajimaguchi Station. The journey takes 25 minutes and from here it is a 5 minute stroll to the port. You will need to take the JR Ferry across to Miyajima. The crossing takes just 10 minutes or so and you will get a fabulous view of Itsukushima Shrine with its famous 'floating' torii gate as the boat glides up to Miyajima pier. Alternatively, you might like to take the tram. This takes quite a lot longer (50 minutes to Miyajima- guchi Port from the Peace Park) but takes you through the streets of Hiroshima and then out to the suburbs providing a rather interesting glancing look at the city. The fare is just 270 yen and the last tram stop is a two minute walk from the port. Japan Rail Pass - Ordinary

Miyajima Miyajima - Introduction Miyajima Island, located just off the coast of Hiroshima, is one of Japan's most loved places with a charming rural atmosphere to match the beautiful surroundings. The island is perhaps best known for the red torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine which appears to be floating in the sea. In the evening this gate and the shrine behind it (as well as other traditional buildings in the area) are floodlit and the atmosphere is magical. A cable car takes you to fantastic views across the Inland Sea from Mount Misen, the highest point of the island. There are many pleasant walks on Miyajima among the temples and along the bustling shopping street in the island's small village. You may also see some of the island's native fauna; the sacred deer are easy to spot as they roam freely, but you'll have to work a little harder to spot any of the resident monkey population; keep your eyes peeled! Miyajima is a wonderful place to slow down, unwind and relax, so take your time and let the magic of this island enchant you!

Yamaichi Bekkan

山一別館

Two Nights On Miyajima Island you will be staying for two nights at the Yamaichi Bekkan, a family run ryokan just a short walk from both the pier (where you will arrive) and the famous shrine. All four rooms are fully en-suite and at such a small establishment you can be sure of personal service. The ryokan acts as a restaurant as well and is well known for its high quality food. The friendly owners are a real delight and can advise about sightseeing in English. Single Use - Japanese Style (Incl. Breakfast & Dinner)

Day 25 (Wednesday 10 August 2011) Ferry and Train from Miyajima to Tokyo You will be getting fantastic value for money from your Japan Rail Pass today as you use it to travel from Miyajima all the way to Tokyo. The Japan Rail Pass covers the 5 minute ferry ride to Miyajima-guchi, the local train to Hiroshima and the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Tokyo. You will need to make a couple of changes but we will include detailed instructions for you. The 916km journey takes some 5 hours and 30 minutes but you can reserve seats most of the way and there is some great scenery to enjoy. Japan Rail Pass - Ordinary
