Description

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of innovation as well as the process of new product development (NPD). Lectures and discussions will focus on the types of innovation (such as incremental and radical innovation) as well as certain categories of innovation (like process innovations, finance innovations, delivery innovations and offering innovations). Students will learn about the methods and tools used by practitioners of innovation. Case studies of a variety of products and services will illustrate a wide range of successful innovations seen in the corporate and not - for - profit environments.

Course Structure

This course will involve the following activities

Lectures Lectures are organized by week; and you are expected to watch/listen to these sometime during that week. In these lectures, I will not cover topics that are directly related to the reading, as that would be unnecessarily repetitive. Instead, I will introduce new topics related to the course.

Readings The readings for the course are either from the two textbooks or PDF articles that will be provided to you.

Quizzes You will have a few short quizzes related to the readings and lectures. These quizzes will help you remember the reading material.

Written Responses to the Lectures/Readings You will be asked to respond to a few questions/discussion topics posed to you based upon the readings and lectures.

Projects In order to apply the material presented in class in lectures and readings, you will work on projects that will demonstrate your grasp of the practical benefits of these topics.

Course Objectives

This course has been designed to achieve the following objectives: • To understand the fundamentals, types and categories of innovation • To learn about the variety of forms of innovation through case studies • To learn about the process of innovation and be able to demostrate it through a project • To understand the principles of sustainability as they apply to the process of innovation

Policies

Reading Assignments One of the primary goals of this course is to provide you with an overview of the topics listed above. This will happen formally through the lectures and readings for the class. One of the books assigned for the course Creating Breakthrough Innovations (we will refer to this book in the Class Schedule as CBI) is published by the Harvard University Press, and examines innovation from a business perspective. The other book, The Art of Innovation (we will refer to this book in the Class Schedule as TAoI), is written by Tom Kelley of IDEO, a design and innovation consultancy, and it outlines the process of innovation in very easy - to - read terms from a design perspective. Late Deliverables Late deliverables will be neither accepted nor graded. In case of an emergency, please call me to discuss options.

Grading

Grades will be determined based on the following categories and points. Each student will be provided with a written evaluation at the end of each phase of the project. Your evaluations will be based upon the quality of the work produced, and it includes your response to the readings and performance on projects. Quizzes (4 total) Responses to Readings (Weekly)

Unacceptable performance and work. Below 60 points.

Assignments

This course includes the following assignments.

Quizzes Four short open-book quizzes will be administered in this course. The content for these quizzes will be drawn from the readings for the course as well as the lectures. See the Class Schedule for dates for the quizzes.

Responses to Readings You are expected to read the material assigned to you and respond to the questions posted on a weekly basis.

Projects In order to apply the concepts introduced in this class to potential or actual real world situations, you will be asked to develop an innovative solution to a problem. We will do two projects in this class as outlined below (more details to follow). Project 1: You have now learnt about several forms of innovation, and this project deals with the application that knowledge to create a new innovation for an existing product. Select any one of the following products and create an Innovation Proposal that outlines your recommendations on how this “product service system” could be improved. Apple iPod | Procter & Gamble Swiffer | Bose Noise Cancellation Headphones | Wrigley Altoids | Gillette ProGlide Razor Project 2: For this project, you have to select an entirely new need for which you want to create a new product service system. You may select a project you have been working on at work or an idea you have had for a new product or service for a long time or anything else you think is in need of innovation. You will get more details on this project later in the semester.
