Spanish fruit grower and importer Sigfrido Fruit was able to secure its first ever imports of Colombian Hass avocados as a result of the mission, taking the company one step closer towards year-round supply of the popular fruit. “The mission had a dual objective,” said owner Sigfrido Molina. “Get to know in situ what Colombia produces and its exotic products.” “Another aspect was to deepen my avocado business. Once there I could meet with many companies thanks to SIPPO’s cooperation,” he said, adding the grower was Hato La Macana and the fruit was packed by COLHASS. Fairtrasa COO Boy Stuijfzand has many years of experience with Colombian fruit, yet he was still impressed by some of the facilities and products witnessed on the mission. He said the domestic market often paid well for Colombian growers but with the amount of hectares planted in some crops – particularly Hass avocados – increased exports would become a necessity. “During a visit to a modern pack house for limes and other products we witnessed a very professional operation. It confirmed my vision about Colombia that it’s a sleeping giant but nobody knows when it will wake up,” he said. 25
