Paul E. Hopkins Endowment Fund

From the President & CEO The Next Chapter

To honor his leadership and dedication to Samaritan Counseling Center, the Board of Directors has set up the Paul E. Hopkins Endowment Fund at Samaritan Counseling Center's Foundation. When consulted about this fund, Paul indicated he wanted proceeds from this endowment to directly benefit those people who would ordinarily be unable to afford Samaritan's services. This has been Paul's core message over his 18 years at Samaritan.

The Samaritan Counseling Center is turning the page, and so am I. I have been delighted to learn that Dr. Tom Sims has been named President and CEO of the Center, effective July 1. Dr. Sims is a superb child psychologist, an able administrator, and a gracious man of faith and integrity. He has been Director of Quality Outcomes at Samaritan since last Fall, when he joined us after concluding his work with ValueOptions, New Mexico. The Center's outstanding staff and dedicated board remain committed to our mission. Our important work of healing will continue with excellence rooted in confident hope. Samaritan's leadership is in extremely good hands.

Also on July 1, I will move on to my next chapter. Retirement will bring rest and a slower pace, but I will not be disappearing from the Albuquerque scene. While I am officially retiring as President and CEO of the Samaritan Counseling Center, I still have stimulating work ahead. After some time off I will be opening a part-time counseling practice just a few blocks from the Center. (The office will know how to reach me, so you can call and ask for my address and phone number if you like.) Meanwhile I am finishing up a book on pastoral leadership which is scheduled for publication in early 2011. And I intend to keep writing about families, faith, mental health, leadership, and the need for a more civil society. It has been my rich privilege to serve for eighteen years as leader of this Samaritan ministry. During that time we've grown from three therapists serving just over two hundred clients in a year to twenty-three therapists serving 5,000 people each year. Samaritan has become the largest private provider of outpatient behavioral health services in our state. Our growth to meet an ever-increasing need has come not only because of our excellent therapists, programs and staff, but especially because of the generosity of individuals and organizations who believe in the work we do. These caring friends have helped us provide more than $6 million in charitable services in the past twenty years, and they give year after year to fund our mission to help all people find wholeness and healing. The people with whom I have worked have been wonderful, and the opportunity to bring resources of healing and spirituality to

people in need has been deeply satisfying. The great need continues, and I will continue to respond to that need from my small corner of the community. Thankfully, the Samaritan Counseling Center will remain a vital and effective force in making central New Mexico a better, more ethical, and healthier place to live. I am grateful for my time with you at Samaritan. I wish you a God's blessings of peace and joy. Paul E. Hopkins, DMin

annual report 2009 The Samaritan Counseling Center concluded 2009 with another very successful year of service to children, adults, families and faith groups in central New Mexico. Here are some highlights of our accomplishments of 2009: We completed 23 years of service, providing healing, reconciliation, education, and

personal and spiritual growth to more than 39,000 people. We have provided over $6 million in charitable services over that twenty-three year period.

We increased the number of people served by more than 50% in 2009, serving over 10,000 children, adults and families through our seven programs.

Our Healthy Marriages program provided marriage education and enrichment services to nearly 2,000 people in New Mexico, and our Called Back to the Well program provided spiritual renewal for over 2,300 clergy and lay leaders.

In 2009, we helped prepare ten mental health interns for work in the professions of social work, psychology, marriage and family therapy, and counseling through Samaritan’s Training and Internship Program.
