A new model is emerging where the report is no longer just a big blunt tool.



After years of sustainability reporting becoming longer, more complex, more formulaic and yet less interesting and less read – I think we might finally be starting to see a more rational approach emerging. Many companies are starting to realise that these timeconsuming, costly report processes are not going away but that in order to make them more effective and actually deliver relevant information to different stakeholders they need to be re-thought. •A  re employees really interested in your water targets and your GRI tables? •A  re investors really interested in your community activity? •D  oes anyone other than the sustainability nerd community (and consultancies like us!) look at the materiality assessment? •D  o NGOs want to see your employees’ volunteering stories? • I s the great thought leadership work you’re doing really going to get noticed in the depths of the report? •D  o your sales people ever actually use the data in the report? All these stakeholders have valid interests, and need information that (probably) sits in the sustainability report. Only they don’t want to read a big sustainability report. So how to cater more effectively for these diverse needs without adding more and more workload on top of the already demanding report process? A new model is emerging where the report is no longer just a big blunt tool, but more of a hub with numerous tailored spokes spinning off it to deliver relevant, useful information in both print and digital, to the various stakeholder groups. Two of our clients are at the vanguard of this new thinking – Coca-Cola Enterprises and Allianz Group. These companies have been known for a while to be among the leading group of international reporters – pushing boundaries and raising standards. And now they are at the leading edge of the process that is helping sustainability reports connect to their audience…

COCA-COLA ENTERPRISES Single issue fact sheets 24 fact sheets, containing hard data and longer, more detailed content; a complete set of these fact sheets forms a full compliance-led GRI report. These sheets are designed for employees and stakeholders with specific interests.

Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) has been seen as a sustainability pace setter for a number of years now and its report has won numerous awards in recent years for innovation, communications and effectiveness. But even this committed reporter started to see the real limitations of what a report can do and the challenge a single report document (be it in print or online) has in delivering useful information to the relevant audiences. The challenge • Break out of the reporting straitjacket and develop a multichannel communications suite, blending print and online to better meet stakeholders’ needs • To push the overall message and communication into the digital realm for maximum impact but also to go beyond ‘push’ and ensure that the content engages users and provides meaningful insight The solution The end result is a mix of different tools and channels, catering for quick readers and serious detail hounds alike; short fun snippets and insights balanced with serious data and technical compliance.

ALLIANZ GROUP The challenge Allianz was producing an award-winning report, renowned for its rigour and comprehensiveness. But its communications could have been reaching a wider range of people. In addition, Allianz like so many other large businesses with various divisions, was looking to connect the corporate report to the great activity and content being generated by the wider world of Allianz – so while there was a fantastic range of information across the Allianz digital platforms it was hard to follow and some of the best bits were just being missed. The solution We reviewed all sustainability communications across the entire Allianz digital platform and worked out how to make reporting (on the corporate site) a hub that led to and was also fed content by the more frequently updated Allianz business solutions and knowledge sites. So the corporate centre works to drive traffic to these sites and they in turn make sure their stories are updated as they get fed to the landing page of the corporate site.

In summary A lot of money and a lot of time has been spent on sustainability reporting and not all of it has been worthwhile. Make no mistake, reporting on performance and good transparency on these issues matters. But a range of complex agendas and demands from GRI to CDP to SRI, while technically sound and well-intentioned, have not always necessarily served the stakeholder/user well. Reports have become bigger and more complex – when shorter and more engaging was what was needed.

So we think that a new model of reporting is essential. With rigour and data at the core – yes. But surrounding this core, there needs to be a responsive set of more tailored communications tools, blending simple fact sheets, the corporate website, social media and internal communication - all serving to ensure the message gets delivered, the audience is engaged and the investment being made is more effective. It needs a few brave companies like CCE and Allianz to show the way – but many others will be following this path.
