WHAT IT MEANS TO GEEK LIBRARY FUNDING Over the past nine months or so, we have been coaxing people to admit to their passions. Our Geek the Library boards at the library are full of people’s interests – wildflowers, motorcycles, politics, storytelling, swimming, football, history, animal rescue. Everyone has a passion, and everyone can find information and resources to support their passion at the library. However, the Geek the Library campaign is about more than just asking people to realize how much their public library has to offer. Geek the Library is also talking about library funding. How much does it take to run a public library, and where does that money come from? What happens to the library when people don’t return their books? As your library director and as an advocate for public libraries, it is my job to geek library funding. As a member of Friends of the Library and as a user of E. G. Fisher Public Library, you too can be a passionate supporter of library funding. Here are some quick facts to get you started. The library is owed $106,344.45 in late charges and lost book fines. That’s approximately 1/3 of our yearly operating budget. With $106,344 we could pay our yearly utility costs for four years in a row. With $106,344 we could more than triple the amount of materials – books, DVDs, magazines and CDs – that we buy in one year. With $106,344, we could start a music collection and allow people check out music CDs and download music files. The City of Athens and McMinn County both help to support the library. These two entities contribute 72% of the library’s total yearly budget. That means that the library is left to raise 28% of its yearly operating budget through other means. Compared to nine other libraries in Tennessee that are a similar size and serve a similar population, E. G. Fisher is fourth from the bottom in overall funding. However, no other library of similar size in Tennessee relies so heavily on private funding as does E. G. Fisher. Whereas E. G. Fisher provides 29% of our budget through private donations (which includes the money our FOL raises), the next closest library provides only 17% of their budget through private means. In budget year 2014-15, E. G. Fisher will need to raise approximately $90,000, through late fines, FOL support, and private donations, to continue to provide the services we do on a daily basis. The public library continues to be the single best return on investment for your tax dollars. If you live in McMinn County, for each dollar you pay in taxes, $0.007 comes to the library. If you live in Athens, for each dollar you pay in taxes, $0.01 comes to the library. So, let’s do the math. If you pay the median annual property tax for McMinn County, which is $524 according to tax-rates.org, $3.66 of that comes to the library. For that $3.66, the return an average family gets on a single visit to the library if they checkout 10 items (books, DVDs, audio CDs), attend one children’s story time, and use a public computer for two hours is $93.27. In one visit. $3.66 paid over a year’s time turns into $93.27 worth of library materials and services in a single visit. Nobody can give you bang for your buck like E. G. Fisher Public Library. As we wind down our Geek Campaign, you can look forward to seeing more information about library funding posted as you come into the library. We will also hold a Geek the Library Breakfast on Wednesday, January 28 at 8:30. This is an opportunity to learn more about how library funding works over coffee and donuts. We’d love to see you there!

You are Invited to the Friends of the Library – McMinn County ANNUAL MEETING Tuesday, January 20, 2015

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

In the Community Room of the E. G. Fisher Public Library At the annual meeting we will approve changes in the bylaws, elect officers, and set the budget for 2015. The proposed bylaws are available at the front desk of the library for your perusal or will be emailed to you with a request to [email protected].

The proposed slate of officers is: President: Bunny Fisher Browder Co-Vice Presidents: Carole Haynes and Debbie Hamilton Recording Secretary: Lynn Perkinson Corresponding Secretary: Whitney Kimball Coe Treasurer: Joyce R. Baker Nominations will be accepted from the floor, provided consent of the nominee is displayed in writing. We hope to see you at the meeting. Thank You, Faithful Friends of the Library Good luck to Scott and Peggy Hallenberg and best wishes for the future. Unfortunately for the FOL Board, we lost a valuable member with Scott’s retirement from active duty! His work on our Annual July Book Sale will be hard to replace. At our last FOL Board meeting, we nominated Scott for a Tennessee Library Association “Friend of the Year” award. The winning nominee will be announced at the 2015 TLA Conference on April 24, 2015. The recipient must be a member in good standing of the Friends of Tennessee Libraries. Also, he/she must have made a significant contribution to a Friends group and to the advancement of libraries in Tennessee. These requirements were certainly demonstrated during Scott’s 20 years of service on the FOL Board. Thank you, Scott! I would also like to say good luck and best wishes to Carolyn and Shirel Grimmett. Carolyn had to resign due to out-of-town commitments. Carolyn’s dedication to our mission of fundraising for E. G. Fisher Public Library and literacy for our entire community will be greatly missed by all. She was always there when we needed food, help, and time. She will also be missed as our Co-Vice President. However, we know Carolyn will be with us as often as possible to volunteer when needed. We truly appreciate the years that she served on our FOL Board. Thank you, Carolyn! —Bunny Fisher Browder CAL / FOL HOLIDAY SHOPAROUND

What fun — teaming with another nonprofit group to raise funds for our individual organizations! On November 8, 2014, the Community Artists League and Friends of the Library hosted a holiday art and book sale at E. G. Fisher Public Library. This was CAL’s Annual Small Works Sale, and the local art community was well represented. FOL provided previously loved books for special gifts. Greeks Bearing Gifts and Cabin at Sugar Ridge had wonderful holiday offerings. The League of Extraordinary Teens, representing Imagination Library, sold out of their items! Joe Guy, a Board Member, and other local authors were selling and signing their books. A delicious lunch was provided, and the attendance was great! Hopefully, this will become an annual event to anticipate each November.

Happy 2015 to all of our supportive “Friends” of E. G. Fisher Public Library. I hope it is a great year for everyone. With this new year, we have the opportunity to start fresh with resolutions and plans for 2015. I want to personally thank those who out of their generosity have contributed to the success and support of our wonderful library and our community. Albert Einstein said, “The only thing that you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library.” Hint—the library is close to Mayfield’s and Ingleside School. Our director, staff, and volunteers are always eager to greet you with a smile and offer to help with everything from finding a special book, filling out a job application, or learning new technology. Don’t know how to use that new Kindle or Nook that you got for Christmas? We can help through many of our free monthly classes. A schedule of classes and programs can be obtained at the front desk. May this New Year find you healthy, peaceful, and content, and looking forward to revitalizing old interests and finding new opportunities to make this New year the best one yet. Thank you for your support, and I hope to see you at E. G. Fisher Public Library in the near future. We have big plans for 2015, and you will want to stay informed on changes, opportunities, and plans for improvements. Please remember that we always need volunteers. Without our volunteer help, we wouldn’t be able to provide all the services we currently offer to our community. Mary Poppins said, “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and the job’s a game.” Happy New Year! —Bunny Fisher Browder WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Ann and Ralph Fenton Rella Green Craig Lee Peggy Elrod Drs. What’s the Buzz in the Children’s Section! We have a fabulously revamped children’s section! Thanks to the generosity of Jack and Connie Allen, we purchased new children’s tables, activity tables, and puzzles. AND in extra huge news our mural is complete! Chris Ingram, Becky Bryant, Max Ortiz, and some wonderful kid volunteers finished this the mural just in time for the end of the year. Please stop in and see the unique artwork made exclusively for the library. Our programs have been a huge success, and I couldn’t be happier with the turnout! This year we added two new weekly programs and both of them turned out to be a success. Our math club, a program set up through Bedtime Math’s Crazy 8’s Pilot Program, learned about geometry by playing with glow sticks, about measuring centimeters and inches in the toilet paper Olympics, and about probability in the Crazy Dice Explosion. For parents interested in playful activities that might happen to sneak in a math skill or two, check out www.bedtimemath.org. Our new Tot’s and Tunes Story Time for ages 1-3 and their caregivers debuted this fall. We wanted to give our active toddlers some time to themselves to run and play and sing. Their caregivers can relax knowing that their toddlers are not bothering anyone else with their natural curiosity and energy. We scheduled this afternoon program as a post-naptime activity, and our attendance continues to climb.

New to come in January 2015, is ScratchED, a technology class where everyone will learn to design a computer game. Designed for school aged children, ScratchEd will introduce programming language and coding. For the budding artist, physicist, or computer programmer, this program is designed to attract students with a wide variety of interests. The current generation of students is more heavily involved with technology than any other generation. ScratchED is designed to make them the creators, rather than consumers, of technology. ScratchED will teach them the basics of designing computer games, one of the fastest growing businesses in the country.

Fisher Teens are AMAZING! Words cannot express how I feel about our Teen Advisory Group! They have been truly impressive with their dedication to the library. This fall, we piloted two new fundraisers, initiated and operated completely by the teens of TAG. Both turned out to be a smashing success! The teens arranged a bake sale and had their goodies available for purchase in the library. They earned over $150! If that wasn’t enough, they wanted to do another fundraiser and decided to sell Yankee Candles. Even though they did not reach their goal of selling 150, they received about $400 profit from their sales. All the proceeds from the fundraisers will go towards supporting teen programs and prizes for next year’s Summer Reading Program. Needless to say they are extremely excited and are planning another bake sale. Keep your eyes out for the next sale date soon to come! Teen programs have been gaining more notice. Each month, the library hosts a “Random Fandom Friday” which basically is an excuse for all the teens to get together and gab over the things we are most obsessive about at the moment! We have obsessed over Doctor Who, Sherlock, The Hunger Games, and Star Wars. We even had a Throwback party and broke out the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s décor, movies, books and clothing. At the end of each event, we ask the teens what they would like to do next, so each month the idea is fresh and what THEY want! It has been great! eBook & Audiobook Classes The library offers so many options for people to be able to check out materials and we even offer ebooks and audio books that can be downloaded to mobile devices without ever leaving your house. Kindles, Nooks, and other tablet devices have been popular gifts for many avid readers, but many do not know that the library offers FREE books. Additionally, there is no chance of ever having late fees! The library will be offering classes on how to download the books and audios to your specific device. INTRODUCING . . .NEW BOARD MEMBERS!! Everett Gillespie is a native of Athens, having grown up with his parents and four siblings on his grandfather’s farm. Currently a Medical Social Worker, he earned a B.S. degree in Human Services from TWC, followed by a M.S. degree from Memphis State University in Vocational Rehabilitation. From a very early age, he has had a love and passion for books and reading, encouraged and fostered by his mother. He serves on the Board of Coordinated Charities, and he is very pleased and honored to serve on the Friends of the Library Board of Directors. Whitney Kimball Coe is also a native of Athens, returning home after more than a decade. She earned a B.A. in Religion and Philosophy from Queens University and an M.A. degree in Appalachian Studies from Appalachian State; subsequently she started her present career with the Center for Rural Strategies, where some of her work has focused on elevating the essential role libraries play in small and rural towns. Alongside her love for her family and community, Whitney is an avid reader. Favorite books include Anne of Green Gables, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Wolf Hall, and Jayber Crow.

Kathy Dougherty , a McMinn County native, owns and operates Eastawood Dairy Farms with her husband, Blan. She has a B.A. degree in Education from TWC, and has taught school in Riceville, her alma mater. She served on the McMinn County Board of Education for fourteen years. She has been on many other Boards, including the McMinn County Education Foundation, the Senior Center, the United Way, and the H.O.P.E. Center. Kathy has a life-long passion for reading, for her mother brought her to join the library as soon as it was built! The Summer Reading Program played a very large part in her children’s lives, and they, too, are avid readers.

A NEW YEAR, A NEW LOOK In the new year, you’ll notice some changes throughout the library. Starting at our front porch, we’ve added three new picnic tables to accommodate the increase of people using the library’s wireless internet after hours. As you come into the library, we will be redesigning the entrance way, giving a new shine to the Friends of the Library Ongoing Gently Used Book Sale. Library shirts, book bags and popular magazines will be for sale, along with our hardbacks and paperbacks. We will be relocating the library’s New Book Shelf to the wall to the right of the front doors as you enter the library. This will give us more space to display our new books, and give people a bit more elbow room to browse. Major changes are already taking place in our children’s section. Last summer, the Volunteer Electric Cooperative gave E. G. Fisher a grant to complete a mural in the children’s section. Hiwassee Builder’s Supply generously donated the paint for the project. Chris Ingram and Becky Bryant, along with a group of student volunteers, began the mural this fall. Chris and local artist Max Ortiz have been putting on the finishing touches, including characters and scenes from popular children’s literature. Chris and Becky have created a fantasy world of dragons, tree houses, mermaids, and pirate ships. Not to be outdone by the mural, we will be investing in new furniture for the children’s section including new, child-sized, lounge seating and new tables with chalkboard and dry erase surfaces. To encourage early learning skills and motor development, we plan to have building blocks, a LEGO table, and other brain-building activities available during the library’s open hours. Technology around the library will also be changing. The catalog computers you use to look for books and movies and other materials are due to be replaced. Soon, you will see iPads throughout the library where you can access our catalog, browse through new and favorite titles, and reserve and review books. We will also automate our check-in procedure for those using our public computers. By allowing patrons to help themselves, our staff will have more time to help patrons find books, solve technology mysteries, and answer your questions. Our library is growing and changing every day. I hope you’ll stop by and be part of our bustling, reading community.

A New Fisher Saturday Sponsor Campaign Begins December marks the beginning of the third year of our Fisher Saturday Campaign. Thanks to the generosity of our Fisher Saturday Sponsors, we have been able to continue to keep the library open on Saturdays throughout the year. Although we are a bit more financially stable than in the peak of the 2008 setback, we still rely heavily on private donations and are not, by any means, out of the woods. Fisher Saturday Sponsors have been the library’s heroes, stepping in at a crucial time to help keep the library open. As we begin our third year of the Fisher Saturday Campaign, please consider sponsoring a Saturday. A Saturday sponsorship is $500, and allows you the opportunity to honor a friend or remember a loved one. Each Saturday Sponsor is recognized by a poster in the entrance to the library on their sponsored Saturday. Church circles and groups of friends have worked together to become Fisher Saturday Sponsors. Organizations have used their sponsorship to recognize the dedication of their employees. The library is continually working towards creating sustainable funding sources. I hope you will be part of our journey. If you are interested in becoming a Fisher Saturday Sponsor, please contact Julie at 745-7782.
