With the beginning of the school year, we are seeing more of you around the club. It's nice to have you back. I guess you have noticed the new breakfast menu. This came as a result of your many requests. I hope we have been able to cover them all and yet have managed to keep the old favorites. Although the golf course is still officially cart paths only, under optimum conditions we are extending the ninety-degree rule. We hope this encourages you to play more often, even though it is still so warm. The exercise classes are running pretty much full. This must mean that some extra pounds were added during the summer lull. I know the Friday lobster nights proved very successful. I'm sorry we were unable to accommodate all of you. Hopefully we will be able to serve more of you as the year progresses. The US Kids Tournament was very successful. Please refer to the golf report to see how well our kids represented Riviera. I can't believe my year is coming to an end. This is the last time I will be addressing you from the President's Corner. I want to thank you for the privilege of allowing me to serve you. Thanks to your help we have had a wonderful year. I want to take this opportunity to officially thank the Board, the committee chairs and their committees, the entire staff (you don't realize what a wonderful group of people we have here until you work as closely with them as I have this year), and most of all YOU, the members. You challenged me, but I must admit I truly enjoyed my year. This coming year I will chair the Long Range Planning Committee. Once again I ask for your help. If you have any concerns or ideas, please share them with me. There is no stupid question. There is no dumb idea. Please bring your thoughts forward. I believe in communication. If you don't tell me, I can't know your thoughts. We share a common goal of making Riviera the best home away from home. Let us know how we can serve you better. John Lukacs will be taking over at the September Board meeting. I want to wish him a wonderful year.

Look for a new program whereby the top 12 junior golfers at Riviera will be listed on a wooden plaque, prominently displayed. Golfers not on the ladder may challenge the number 12 player. Players on the ladder may challenge the next golfer above them. Initially, play will be nine holes, match play, scratch. Players will play the tees that correspond with their age—yellow, green, or red. At the beginning, boys and girls will be on the same ladder. In the future, we will look at expanding to two ladders.

The US Kids Tournament held at Riviera Country Club on August 5th went very well indeed. Our staff did an excellent, well-coordinated job of preparation and execution. Bryan Singleton’s staff on the golf course went out of their way to get the course in the best shape possible, especially considering the rain we experienced in the week prior. 63 kids signed up; and 56 played. Ten children from Riviera were in the field (see results below). Scoring was displayed and prizes were awarded in the Pavilion. Parents and US Kids staff were very complimentary and indicated that this tour stop was the best by far on the US Kids Tour this year. We also received positive publicity through a favorable article with photos and results in the Coral Gables Gazette.
