President’s Message My dear Members, When you this newsletter reaches you, several of us will be on our various ways to the IOLI Convention in Indianapolis, IN (July 17-23). Although enjoy trains much more, I’m (bleah!) flying this year – too many train changes for this one! Thank you, Priscilla, for an excellent class in Hanger with all those lovely samples and books! If I can ever learn to count to four, I’d like to make a fairly large cloth…. Thank you, Bill, for teaching this month’s Project: a bracelet in needle tatting. Darn! I’m missing it! That’s OK, I know where to find you…… Now, I have to get to work and finish my hat for Tuesday’s dinner; only two more pieces to go. Happy lacing, Sylvia P.S. Keep working on the 5 Yards; I know you can do it. I want to see more! P.P.S. I just finished a wedding garter…

July 2016 Meeting

President Sylvia Fellows called the June 18, 2016 meeting of the Freeway Lace Guild to order at 10:44a. Member Priscilla Atwell was with us to teach the hardanger class. Guest Jerilyn Phippeny joined us later in the day. She had heard about us at the Victorian Fair and took several busses to reach us. The minutes were approved as printed. Julia noted that the San Bernardino County Fair pictures were mislabeled. All of the pictures in the June newsletter showed member Lolly Kjolsrud's entries and awards. Shirley Lawyer's will be in the July newsletter. COMMITTEES Membership: Kate says we have three more members, close to 50. Treasury: Louise tells us we have a balance of $12,229.19. Rent has increased $35 to $120. The church says they have to pay taxes on the income from our rent. It's still a deal to find a room for the day for $120. Demonstrations: Bill will contact Chaffey-Garcia regarding the November demonstration. The Homestead Museum may have an event in December. Lynn invited members to demonstrate at the Antelope Valley Fair and Alfalfa Festival in Lancaster, Saturday August 27, 2-5p. Parking and entry are provided. Facility is air conditioned. Pricilla will meet her there. Contact her if you would like to participate. [email protected] or leave message at 909 883-3785. Library: Vibs is off and about today. Unfortunately Louise forgot the Hardanger books. Elbert however, brought part of his stash as freebies, including origami and knitting. THANK YOU Elbert! Volunteer Hours: Using the form in the June newsletter, please provide Sylvia with your volunteer hours each month. Program: .Maria is in Slovenia at OIDFA today. Bill teaches a needle tatted bracelet with beads in July. Lace Day: First Saturday in November, the 5th, at the church in Pasadena. Theme is "swans." The church says there are plenty of tables in the cupboards. The flyer will be ready for August, including info and order forms for bobbins. There will be a swan lace challenge. Belinda Belisle will have a special presentation at 1p on Lace Conservation. Mini classes include Netting-Jean Doig, Lace ID-Bill McConnell, Tatting-Sylvia Fellows, Using Your Computer to Design-Priscilla Atwell, Beginning Bobbin Lace (new project)-Vibs Clausen. Raffle prizes and goodie bag items are needed. Sylvia already has 65 sanity savers. ANNOUNCEMENTS Patricia and Rose Mary are cruising the Baltic while taking a knitted lace class with Galina. Smocking Guild info is in the June newsletter. Milanese workshops with Louise Colgan will be held in Sunnyvale. Sylvia will be teaching Chrysanthemum lace there March 2017. The Hedgehogs 19th annual Lace-In will feature Kim Davis, Louise Colgan, Randy Houtz and JoDee Kane. FLG has a 5-Yard Club. Find a roller pillow and start moving the bobbins. Earn a Certificate, Pin and Bobbin with logo. Only make it to 2yards, get a smaller pin and certificate. It makes a wonderful demonstration project. Next month Kate & family will be off to England, Sylvia & Maria to IOLI along with others & Lynn may be guiding the meeting. Program Calendar July 16 – Needle Tatting - Bill Mc Connell August 20 - Tatting with Bill Mc Connell September 17 - Bobbin Lace. October 15 - Possible Snowflake star with beads in tatting - Note there are 5 Saturdays so our meeting is very early November 5th - Lace Day at our regular meeting place not in Torrance. See the flyer December 3rd - Annual Christmas party Please remember there is a $5 fee for all classes. This helps defray the teacher's expenses. Some of our teacher's travel over an hour to come teach. NEEDLE TATTING with William McConnell Students will need: 2 tatting needles I use doll maker's needles, aka soft sculpture needles. They are about 4 to 5 inches long and very sharp. I will bring a file to help dull the points. (I get them at Walmart, JoAnn’s, etc.) Size #20 crochet thread or thread the size of the needles you are using. You need 2 different colors. I will bring some if you don’t have any. 33 beads large enough to thread on the needle and thread, say 3mm or 8mm. (I have some I got at Walmart I can share.) Eventually you will need some sort of clasp but you can make the band first without it. (Yes, I got mine at Walmart too) I will bring instructions, file, crochet thread orphans, and some extra beads that I have. Try this easy practice to prepare for class with Bill

Message from Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum: 170th Anniversary of the Battle of the Old Woman's Gun and Living History Reenactment Hello Everyone! This is Alison Bruesehoff and Ginger Alberti from the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum and we are emailing everyone to hopefully get everyone excited and ready to commit to this year's 170th Anniversary of the Battle of the Old Woman's Gun, and Living History of the 1800's Encampment. It has been 170 years since the battle, and this year the reenactment dates land on the ACTUAL DATES of the battle: October 8th and 9th. We had an amazing event last year, with all of the hard work (which we all call fun!), from all of the volunteers and participants and staff from the DRAM (Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum)! We are planning for a spectacular event and would love to have everyone involved again - Please share this information with your friends. If you couldn't be there last year, we hope you can come this year. The living history camp was wonderful and we want it to continue to grow - Livelihoods, Domestic and Social Life... your ideas are welcome! The battles were great and hopefully this year we can get more people involved! We welcome experienced and new participants for the portrayal of the US military and the California so please tell everyone you know this is a big year. Please mark the dates on your calendar: October 8th and 9th, Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 4pm (Camps open to the public). Arrival on Friday, and departure Monday optional for those with large camps or long distances. Flush toilets and hot water! We would also like to introduce you to the new Interim Director of the Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum, Kevin Burciaga - taking a step up from the California role he played last year at the reenactment and his cocoordinator Kathleen Rabago. Their emails are the following: Kevin at [email protected] Kathleen at [email protected]
