The 2014 World Reputation Rankings (WRR) by Times Higher Education Magazine has been released with Harvard, MIT and Stanford in the first three spots. Around 20 countries have been represented in this list, while India has no representation in the top-200. During the 2013 ranking Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and IIT Bombay placed at 130th and 192nd places. It is pathetic to know that no Indian institute in the top 200 of the Times Higher Education Ranking. Now another admission season is around the corner. After higher secondary and a slew of entrances, students are gearing up for their undergraduate studies. Though India has no Institute to be proud enough in the league of top 200 institutes of the world, we have world-renowned great brands like IITs and some top engineering and b-schools in both public and Private sectors. These entities are trying to up their ante in pedagogy, infrastructure, student-teacher ratio, R&D and

Industry-academic interface. IITs, IIMs, IISc, IISER, Manipal, Amrita, Symbiosis, Bits-Pilani, IIITs and hundreds of others are striving to achieve that coveted position. But this journey will take some time to come to fruition. Higher education is the best investment for your child. And that happens only once…Edubeanz Guide for Higher Education- 2014 opens a window of opportunities. After higher secondary and graduation, the destiny of a student is at the crossroads. Few with strong ambition and passion will walk through their pre-planned future. But the doubtful majority will undergo sleepless brainstorming mode to decide on their future- Engineer, doctor, fashion designer, financial analyst, sound engineer, journalist, or what? Honors in USA/UK or BBA in India? Foreign or Indian MBA? Thousands of professions, millions of educational institutions, hundreds of streams, glitzy ads to lure in… you may lose ways at this juncture. Don’t worry. In spite of Internet, many

are incapable to reach at a decision though information is at fingertips…. Edubeanz Guide throws light on best colleges of India for undergraduate and MBA studies. Don’t forget to consult with a qualified education counselor before getting into a final decision. And I have an advice to the parents. Don’t misunderstand the passion of your child. Many of them may be the next Sachin, Bill Gates or Shah Rukh Khan. Don’t kill your kids’ passion for the sake of a Medical or Engineering degree. You need an immense self-control to keep you out of the herd instinct. Everybody runs after “goldmine” degrees which can bring 6 or 8 digit salaries. But don’t forget to read your kid’s mind. Parents’ worry obviously matters…. Their worry are to make a safest bet for their kid in future. But all students are not cookie-cutter type. So try to hear the inner voice of your child. You cannot make it in a day or two…You have to embed this culture into your DNA. Then you can shape their future in another more exciting way….

Best of luck

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR ENGINEERING COLLEGE? W Good college changes the way you study, the peer group is different, and the quality of placements is much better

ith over 13,00,000 seats being made available at AICTE-approved institutions and another 85,000 seats at State private and deemed universities, it is not that difficult to be an engineer. It is just about get into a programme and a better institution that offers value. Take the story of Rahul, a student of Tamil Nadu State Board. He is tense. His IIT-JEE results are out and he does not stand a chance. He is confident of cracking AIEEE, but the scores will be out only by June 6. He has given the State Boards exam but awaiting results. He has offers of admissions from two private universities and both want him to join before May 31. If we were to advise Rahul, we would suggest that if the private university has a reasonably good placement record and the branch offered is to his

9

liking, he must take it. But Rahul did not like the branches he was offered by the private university…..So your choice is important. Selecting an engineering course is a difficult choice because either your choice makes you happy rest of your life or after four years of engineering you try to change your field. How to rate your college Good college changes the way you study, the peer group is different, and the quality of placements is much better. While choosing your college, you should take into consideration about the following four main factors and the weightage to be allotted to each when making a decision: 1.Quality of placements Two issues have to be kept in mind when you look at placements- numbers and the type of companies that recruit the bulk of students. First, identify the average percentage of placements by looking at the Mandatory Disclosures (downloadable from the website). If the list of companies and the number of offers are given, it is a good sign. See the percentage of students placed. Since the biggest recruiters are IT companies, and since they recruit from circuit branches (ECE, EEE, IT, CSE) branch-wise placement record is quite essential. 2.Quality of Infrastructure Do not go by buildings and land asset. They are the easy

How good are labs in the discipline of your choice? Do they have desirably adequately enough modern equipments? How many books per student are there in the library? What e-journals do they subscribe to? How much per capita spending do they have? These are difficult questions that can get answers from the website alone.

to acquire. How good are labs in the discipline of your choice? Do they have modern equipment adequately enough? How many books per student are there in the library? What e-journals do they subscribe to? How much bandwidth on a per capita basis do they have? These are difficult questions that can get answers from the website alone. 3.Quality of faculty This is impossible to assess correctly for any young student. But be on the lookout for years of experience of the faculty. Verify how many of them have less than three to five years of experience; they would be greenhorns with no teaching experience. The more the number of faculty in the team between 10-20 years, the better would be the quality. This is only a ballpark measure so take it as such. Speak with your seniors to see if the quality of faculty is good. 4.Quality industry interface Look for tie-ups with Industry, like the Microsoft Research Centre, IBM Research Centre or Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) core. See if the institute has a tech park. Find out whether it has received funding from external agencies for research. Study their website thoroughly. The engineering ball game Admissions is a complicated process because it varies by the entrance exam, the type of institution and the state in which the institution is located. Like Rahul, one in four engineering aspirant takes the IIT admission test JEE. May be one in two would take AIEEE and almost everyone eligible would look at the state-level test/admission. The students have a hierarchy of admissions. 1. Established IITs- Top Priority

10

EDUBEANS GUIDE 2014

2. Established NITs- Second Priority 3. Established Engineering colleges in Government/Private sector 4. New Engineering colleges who have strong brand recall 5. Other reputed private engineering colleges Harish Iyer, a PhD scholar at IIT Madras, says that only for the top 50-60 Engineering colleges in the country matters. According to him as one moves beyond the top 100 colleges, there is very little to differentiate other than the infrastructure, location, some tie-ups and the effectiveness of their PR. And most of them, according to him are hunting grounds only for those IT services companies which have massive manpower requirements. So according to Harish, college would take priority over the branch, only if you are discussing the top 50-60 colleges

B. Com. (Hons.) with specializations in Accounting and Financial Management, Human Resource Management and Marketing Management is a good offer from Alliance University, Bangalore. The curriculum of the B. Com. (Hons.) degree course is rigorous and progressive, and prepares its graduates for careers in commerce and accountancy as well as for other professional roles such as security, economic and business analysts in financial institutions and stock broking firms. B.Com graduates can later pursue Master’s-level courses such as M. Com., MFM and MBA as well as other professional courses in commerce and accountancy such as CA, CS, ICWA and CIMA.

WHY AND HOW TO CHOOSE AN IDEAL BRANCH ? The job preferences for branches keep on changing. So do not consider the job opportunities only while selecting your branch.

I

n selecting a branch your first priority must be your passion. While some students run after branches that open up maximum jobs, some students prefer to go by personal likes. Interest is the prime concern. But if you are not too particular, then go for a branch which opens up opportunities. But keep in mind one hard fact. Opportunities would change according to the market. Core branches in engineering such as civil and mechanical are believed to be the oldest branches in engineering study and are considered to be evergreen branches. But in the mid 1980s the demand for civil engineering students saw a slump. At present it has regained its importance and is today considered to be one of the most sought after branches. “At present every fresh graduate has at least three offers from the core sectors. A couple of years back when engineering colleges were springing up at every nook and corner, the colleges were setting up shop with only a few branches such as computer science, IT and EEE. Now most of the colleges are trying to develop the civil engineering branch. This trend proves that the branch is once again looking up,” says K. Rambabu, professor at Andhra University. But Zahid, a blogger and a PhD graduate from IIT Rourkee has a difEDUBEANS GUIDE 2014

11

ferent story to say: “When I passed out in 2001 most of the dotcom companies failed leaving many of us jobless. During that everyone just ran for Electronics and communication engineering or Electrical Engineering. Adding more to depression, parents of first year students started ranking Computer Science below Civil Engineering. Instead of doing little research or listening to the people in the industry most of parents just read news paper to make conclusions, which in long run make a deep impact on career and in turn whole life. During 2009, due to the global recession and Satyam scandal, once again most of the people are in dilemma about Computer Engineering and Electronics Engineering.” So the above experiences bring forward a hard fact that the job preferences for branches keep on changing. So do not consider the job opportunities only while selecting your branch. If you have a real passion in the branch, you can find out new opportunities….So ask your inner conscience those hard questions before choosing your branch:

1.Computer Science & Engineering

1.Do you like computer? (Not the computer games or internet but the machine and its operation) 2.Do you understand logic very well? 3.Do you always experiment with your computer and surprise others? 4..Can you handle high-end algorithms and do pattern recognition? 5.Does writing machine-level code excite you? 6. Do you design games and small softwares to ease your work? 7. Do you like puzzles? Computer engineers continually push the capability and applicability of computers in every industry and every facet of modern life. Computer engineers are improving the ability of computers to “see” and “think”. They are making computers more mobile and even incorporating computers into fabrics, clothes, and building materials. They can also become programmers.

2.Electrical & Electronics

1.Do you like to repairing electrical appliances? 2.Have you had the urge to open the calculator to see its functions? 3.Do capacitors, transistors and ICs excite you? 4. Have you ever do any electrical jobs like repairing switches, changing tubes and replacing fuse etc. 5.Have you assembled a PC after buying the components? 6.Is transmission and distribution of electricity of interest to you? 7.Do you want a personal robot? So, if you get “YES” for 5 questions, this is your destiny. Remember that a degree in electrical and electronic engineering prepares you to work in the vast range of engineering sectors, including aerospace, automotive, energy, information technology and telecommunications.

12

EDUBEANS GUIDE 2014

3.Mechanical & Production Engineering

1. 1.Do you like physics? 2.Have you attempted repairing your bike yourself? 3.Can you get your hands dirty, and don’t mind the grease? 4.Can you stand strenuous physical labour? 5.As a child are you interested in bikes and cars? 6.Do you have a good hand at drawing? 7.Do you like to make some new mechanism? If yes, then you are at right place. Mechanical Engineering is your thing. This branch requires a real hard work. Mechanical engineering field requires an understanding of core concepts including mechanics, kinematics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis and electricity.

4.Civil Engineering

As one goes down the pecking order, a good branch would stand you in good stead, because after all the college is useful only until you get your first job. Then on, a student is on their own.

1.Are you interested in construction? 2.Do built environments fascinate you? 3.Do you have a sense of proportion and aesthetics? 4.Can you visualize structures over different landscapes? 5.Do enjoy making people comfortable? 6.Can you handle sociological and psychological issues? If answer is yes, best of luck and go ahead. Keeping in mind that, a Civil engineer is a person who practices civil engineering and it comprises the jobs like the application of planning, designing, constructing, maintaining, and operating infrastructures. Irrespective of the number of entrances you give or colleges you apply to, have a list of branches you would prefer. But group them in lots of three. For example, like Mech, ECE, and IT or something else. This is your first group. Have four such combinations. This would help you in deciding between colleges much more easily. Though college matter a lot, unless you are in a branch, which has larger employment potential you may not be picked up by employers. So the branch matters. As one goes down the pecking order, a good branch would stand you in good stead, because after all the college is useful only until you get your first job. Then on, a student is on their own 

The Bachelor of Finanical and Investment Analysis is a six-semster professional degree programme for those interested in the Indian financial markets. The course is offered by Amity University and Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies (University of Delhi). Eligibility: Plus Two.

Language skills opens up a range of exciting opportunities in the corporate world. The course, BA Diploma or certificate in Foreign Languages opens good job opportunity before the students. Languages like French, Spanish, German, Italian, Chinese and Korean bring good job openings. JNU, Delhi, Jamia Milia University, EFLU and Delhi University are the major centres which provide these foreign language courses.

oing beyond primary branches like Civil, Mechanical and Electrical, there’s scope in myriad areas, from Industrial Design to Dairy Technologies. In the earlier era, engineering meant either Civil or Mechanical or Electrical. Interdisciplinary meant Electronics and Telecommunications. With the advent of computing, Information Technology became the new craze. As knowledge expanded and new challenges rose in the corporate field, new disciplines emerged as potential fields of study in many academic domains. With the advent of new technologies the boundaries between engineering branches are fast diminishing. Engineering also is evolving fast and multidisciplinary studies are par for the course. While disciplines like Textiles, Power and Petroleum have been in existence for quite long, new verticals are on the rise. We present some specialized branches and job opportunities entail with it:

Applied electronics and Instrumentation

Creation of well equipped devices for various purposes is unavoidable in the emerging era of automation and process driven industries. Typically, a B.Tech. (Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering) is a four year course. Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering is a field that focuses on the development as well as implementation of electronic and electrical instruments for measuring, monitoring as well as recording the physical phenomena. Subjects studied under this degree are Mathematics, Digital Electronic Circuits, Electrical Machines, Engineering Economics, Electrical

Ceramic Engineering

Ceramic engineering deals with the creation of objects from inorganic and non-metallic materials by using heat, or lowering temperatures through precipitation reactions from high purity chemical solutions. Ceramic materials, being heat resistant finds usefulness in mining aerospace, refinery, medicine and a wide range of industries. Looking for new ways to use ceramic materials and glasses that withstand high heat and resist corrosion, ceramic engineers create materials that repair human bone with bio-glasses, treat cancer, power the internet via fiber-optic cables, and provide environmentally

friendly coatings for the aerospace industry. Ceramic engineers use basic principles from chemistry and physics to understand how to design new materials at the atomic level, then process these materials into useful forms. You might develop exterior tiles for the next Space Station, cathodes for fuel cells, conductive ceramics used in microprocessors and solar panels, bioactive glasses that help cure liver cancer in humans, flexible prosthetics for Paralympic athletes, or lenses in night-vision goggles for pilots. Ceramic engineers can join in Government institutions like Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute and SAIL etc. In US, you will get better chances- both small and big. Companies such as Corning, Kohler, Alcoa, Caterpillar, Boeing, 3M, General Motors, NASA, Motorola and many more are there. Ceramic materials are used in a wide range of industries, including mining, aerospace, medicine, refining, the food industry, the chemical industry, packaging science, electronics, industrial and transmission electricity, and guided light wave transmission.

WHICH IS THE BEST ENGINEERING COURSE FOR GIRLS? Zahid

A PhD graduate from IIT Rourkee in Computer Science Now working in Samsung Electronics, South Korea inspiring engineering aspirant through his blog: http://www.inspirenignite.com/

very time I visit India, many of my relatives and known people visit me for seeking advise regarding engineering courses. This always made me to think about the latest courses and their scope in view of a middle class family. Speciallly for girls, Parents are always worried about which is the best engineering course for girls? Instead of directly taking to my advise in this regard I would like to mention a little about most popular engineering streams first and leave to make a decision. But I also give a choice of my preference. If you look at my series of posts on Engineering courses prospects and future, I clearly mentioned the scope of every engineering course with core companies and also stated that every engineering field have good opportunities provided you work hard and be sincere. Apart from this I would like to recommend that the courses for the girls can be in the below priority. 1. Computer Science and IT 2. Electronics and Communication Engineering 3. Biotech or Bioengineering 4. Electrical Engineering 5. Chemical Engineering All the above courses have both teaching, lab experiments and job are within the building and you don’t need to go out for educational reasons. Whereas other engineering course like Civil, Mechanical,

CSE V/S IT WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR ME? Computer science Engineering (CSE) is - “What is a computer and how it works?” Information technology (IT) is - “what and how can i do with computers.” Unless you are keen on a career in research, the two engineering branches could be disarmingly similar. “Computer science Engineering (CSE) is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes”- Renowned computer sciences Edager W. Dijkstra made this observation. CSE is the study of computers. You typically learn about hardware and operating systems. Things like registers, multitasking kernels, data buses, address buses. It’s real techy stuff. Information Technology is the more about the study of the use of computers to solve human/ business problems. You study some programming, databases, applications, etc. Computer Science engineers are involved in many aspects of computing from the design of individual microprocessors, personal computers and supercomputers to circuit design and writing software that powers them. They are also suited for robotics research, which relies heavily on using

CSE is good if you want to get into very technical/mathematical-related jobs like game programming, certain finance IT related jobs (not most but some), and in research companies like Google.

CS is meant to be a scientific degree and IT is more “applied”. Some people say that computer science is to physics, where IT is to electrical/ mechanical engineering.

digital systems to control and monitor electrical systems like motors and sensors in different machines. Information Technology (IT) deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to store, protect, process, transmit and securely retrieve information. IT Professionals perform a variety of duties that range from Installing applications to designing complex computer networks and Information databases. They are suited for data management, networking, engineering computer hardware, database and software design, as well as the efficient management and administration of entire systems. Why the two branches? The CSE programme usually deals with how to build micro processors, how to write a compiler etc. IT is the business side of computers usually dealing with databases, business and accounting. One way to think of it is that IT deals with the application of computing technology to real life processes and CSE deals with the “science” that facilitates these applications. Further, while CSE focuses on the foundation of computing, IT as a discipline focuses on satisfying the computing technology needs of organizations. So, in a continuum between principles and application, IT focuses more on application, with the goal being to apply knowledge of computing sciences for solving problems. However, as the foundations of IT are in Computer Science, Indian universities and colleges deem it feasible to have a CS-based IT programme. This allows a graduate of the programme to choose a career in CS or IT, based on their choice and availability of job

24

EDUBEANS GUIDE 2014

prospects. Mostly corporate make little difference between these disciplines while selecting students for their companies. Curriculum at a glance Ultimately, what would really matter to you as a student is how far the course curriculum is different. Most of the top-notch institutes (Including all IITs, IIITs and most NITs) have either CSE or IT but not both. This clearly signals that the difference between the two branches is not significant enough to warrant their simultaneous presence on a campus, at least in the eyes of the top engineering colleges in the country. Furthermore, for the few colleges that do offer both IT and CSE, the differences in the course structure are minimal. How to make a choice? The fact that the creators of Google, Facebook, YouTube, etc. have all done Computer Science degrees instead of I.T shows why Computer Science is superior. For the average IT professional, an IT degree will suffice. Majority of IT jobs are business-focused, which means you are there to implement and maintain tools to supplement business processes. IT will allow you to broaden your skills beyond just technical skills. You will have more non-technical subjects and electives that allow you to study subjects from other disciplines. CS is good if you want to get into very technical/mathematical-related jobs like game programming, certain finance IT related jobs (not most but some), and in research companies like Google. IT may be a better chocie as you solve more real world problems and focus on more real world IT scenarios. Just saying... a good chunk of IT jobs are in infrastructure, and I know a crapload of infrastructure guys with backgrounds in CS and EE. TBH, those degrees are overkill if you end up being sys/net admins, or solutions architect. IT will give you a much broader perspective for those type of jobs. If you have to choose between IT and CSE, and have both options in hand, it would be wise to decide it on the basis of the reputation and standing of the college rather than the branch. If you have to choose between IT and CSE, in the same college, see what excites you more, design of computers and computing system or using computers to solve information management requirements of organization. IT will not open your career prospects overseas, it’s very business minded and what differentiates you from the immense amount of those studying IT, especially in India where they come cheaper (no offence). you will learn more programming in a Computer Science degree, and are able to gain more experience and knowl-

edge in computation, programming, networking, A.I, etc. more. Computer Science will better equip you to be a better programmer and a better computer expert. If you can handle the mathematics and abstract logic involved, it is much better to do a Computer Science degree. Although it will be harder, you will get much more out of it, the critical thinking skills obtained will be invaluable. Prof. Ravichandra, Head of the Department, Computer Science at Acharya Institute of Technology, Bangalore explains more:“ When the two were introduced at the undergraduate level, Computer Engineering and Information Technology had different objectives. But today, they appear as synonyms. Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) and Information Science and Engineering (ISE), offered by Visvevaraya Technological University, Belgaum, Karnataka have minor differences in the subjects they offer. For instance, subjects such as File Structures, Management and Information Systems MIS are covered by ISE whereas Computer Graphics and Advanced Microprocessors are covered only by CSE. But there is a misconception among parents and the student community at large that Computer Science and Engineering has wider scope than Information Science and Engineering (ISE), thereby leading to more demand for CSE. Truth to be told, both have equal scope and students from both branches are equally employable in the IT industry. ”

The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), and the related National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) are a group of premier science education and research institutes in India. WHY CAREER COUNSELING IS IMPORTANT? Chitra Menon

Career counselor, Mumbai

There are many dangers if you follow your passion blindly, without adequate skill and hard work. Following an alien professional programme for the sake of a better job is also equally hazardous. So better is approach a professional career counselor to get an answer….

L

et us take the story of Famous bollywood singer Shreya Goshal. Shreya’s father Biswajeet Ghoshal is a nuclear power plant engineer and works for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, and her mother is a literature post-graduate. She is from the family of doctors, engineers and big professionals. Obviously there were compulsions from her relatives on her to focus on study and become either a doctor or engineer or a scientist. Shreya at the age of 20, graduated in English Literature from SIES College, Mumbai. But her true calling was for music. And she persisted on her passion and rest is the history. Now Shreya says “ The Ghosals are ‘idiots’ as they let their daughter follow her heart .The Ghosals are also ‘idiots’! In our colony when everyone aspired to be a doctor

or an engineer and many people said deteriorating things when I decided to go for career in singing and did not take up science. My parents never let my moral go down at any point in time. They let their daughter follow her heart!”. It is proved that her journey was in right direction for Shreya … So here the question is going after passion or safeguarding a better job by following a professional course. The answer is hard to come by. There are many dangers if you follow your passion blindly, without adequate skill and hard work. Following an alien professional programme for the sake of a better job is also equally hazardous. So better is approach a professional career counselor to get an answer…. What is career? It is not just a job. It is a way of life, and your achievements and happiness depend on it. Today, innumerable new avenues have opened up. Do not get into a course or a job just because everyone else is rushing for it. How do you select your career? Very often we are pushed into jobs and careers which are not suitable for us. To really be able to succeed, progress and enjoy our work, it is necessary that we should have interest in what we are doing, and also have an aptitude for it. Aptitude is the potential to develop the skills that are required in any particular field. Important decision You should understand that each career has different aptitude requirements, and only by matching them scientifically we can be sure that we are heading in the right direction. Selecting an effective and satisfying career path is one of the most important decision a person makes in life. But as a student, facing such a crucial choice is difficult as their self-understanding and awareness of the world is very modest.

In the best-case scenario, student discusses about their higher education dreams and career path with their parents and who help them to achieve their dreams and provide them with right information. Still, it is not easy for parents to understand the specific personal qualities and hidden abilities of their child and match them with viable occupations. So this important decision needs a career counseling process which involves self-analysis, formulation of personal values and goals, realization of educational and professional requirements and an all-round analysis of specific careers that have been suggested based on the above information. Figure out early Merchant Navy is good profession for boys as it is goldmine offering six digit salaries. You should possess good mental and physical health (keen eyesight is a prerequisite) and zero body defect to interfere with the efficient performance required at the sea. So if you do not have these qualities, you can earlier drop “Merchant Navy dream”. And women are not fit for defense services as it needs great physical involvement. Basic problem lies in structure of our society where men are on upper tier. So it is not easy for a woman to get into these fields unless she is having immense support from her family.

Just look at this question from a student: I really want to study medicine and becoming a doctor. But right now I realised that I’m scared of dissecting dead bodies and surgery, Is it common for a medical student to feel that way before they were expose to those stuffs??Is it possible for me to overcome the fear? Ans: Medical doctors have at least one year of anatomy and they dissect a human cadaver. Medical students don’t necessarily have to do surgery but you will be getting very up close and personal with lots of very sick people. It is possible to overcome your fears but I suggest you do it before you start to go to your medical school. Importance of counselling So figuring out a career path early on has become increasingly important. Parents usually turning to career counseling services for their teens, sometimes as young as 14, to help give their kids a career reality check and to figure out which academic areas they should focus on. Tough economic times, the rapidly changing job market, and the skyrocketing cost of post-secondary education have put pressure on many parents to help their kids figure out career goals. So they do not waste money or time on education programme that might not suit them. There are options today for career counseling. One can get basic career advice from a school’s guidance counselor. Now all kind of information (including live video) is available online.

Career assessment The goal of career assessment is not to choose one specific profession or career path but rather to identify two or three general areas and to highlight the educational path that leads to each of them. This usually creates a sense of purpose and confidence as people can now visualize their future and the road that lead to it. Despite the increased attention to career education in our schools, we find that the adolescents are very poorly informed about the world of work and have little understanding of how to create a viable career plan for themselves. This often leads to anxiety, confusion, and avoidance of all efforts to deal with the issue when it is approached by the parents. Psychological testing Type theory suggests that human behavior is not random but predictable and classifiable. What type you are says quite a bit about you -- your likes and dislikes, your likely career choices, your compatibility with others, and so on. Typologists have devised your pairs of preference alternatives as stated below: 1. Introvert or extrovert 2. Sensing or intuitive 3. Thinking or feeling 4. Judging or perceiving In-depth individual interview is needed to know the personality type which sleeps inside a student. There are formal psychological testing which include a measure of the student’s aptitude for different types of learning or a test of cognitive ability, a formal assessment of their personality, and an occupational interest survey. An in-depth discussion with the career counselor allows the student to make sense of the information obtained through formal testing and to analyse the suggested choice. We believe that the student’s unique personality, their special gifts and talents, as well as their interests and aspirations should be the starting point. Through this process of self-exploration, students become active participants in planning their future. Together with the counselor, they begin to understand how their unique profiles map to a range of today’s professions and occupations. Psychological assessment-based career counseling services can be provided by psychologist, professional career counselor, or social worker trained to provide such services

Best Medical Colleges of India

A DOCTOR IS NEXT TO GOD!

M

edicine is one of those colleges where it is never too late to start studying. Whether you are already studying medicine or just planning to do so, you must have wondered what are the true reasons to enroll in this field, which is according to many the most responsible one there is. Before you determine what field you are interested in, you will have most certainly pondered all the pros and cons of your potential choice. With just over 40,325 seats, it is also one of the most competitive degree programme to enter. The number of seats has grown up definitely from 1,200 coming out of the 19 medical schools in 1974 to 335 schools currently churning out 40000+ doctors. But as a percentage of population, that is a sorry figure. So the demand for a medical seat is huge. That is why MBBS still remains the ultimate choice for any medical aspirant. Once you have considered medicine as a possibility, things might complicate - the first issue being whether to listen to your heart or your mind. Our minds often impose subjective points of view of the society and our immediate surroundings, which will undoubtedly encourage us to choose medicine up to that point when we forget what our heart’s and our own desires are. In this article we bring ten (objective) reasons why to study medicine. People’s person? A lot of students name working with people as their primary reason to study medicine. If you are a people person, medicine is the right choice for you. It is of vital importance to stress that to work with people you absolutely must have a great deal of tolerance towards endangered social groups, e.g. the old and disabled. In course of your studies you will be able to improve this skill even if you do not have a particularly developed affinty towards working with people.

Help people and happy The progress of the human kind and civilization is the purpose of almost all of the college programmes. Medicine participates in this process in the most direct way. The most doctors would say that there is no greater joy than the one you feel when you manage to help a very sick patient or when a group of scientists discovers a new medicine for a certain disease. Continuous learning The end of medical studies does not mean the end of learning. Quite the opposite - your college is providing you with basics for further knowledge and skill development. Summits and seminars are often organized in exotic locations in order to attract as many doctors as possible. A lot of students see this reason as the significant difference in comparison to other studies and for this they point medicine out as a unique example of constant professional perfecting

After graduation what?

MBA: PERFORM OR PERISH What makes the Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) degree so desirable is its guarantee on fat salary packages. Generally speaking, getting an admission into a good Indian B-school is just like giving a man a spade and telling him where the treasure is buried. That is why once a QS (World famous Quacquarelli Symonds, a British-based educational ranking and careers advice company) Business school Report had said that the Indian MBA graduates are “academically most distinguished”.

EDUBEANS GUIDE 2014

D

uring the year 2000, an IIM student got an offer of $225,000 annual pay packet from a New York based investment bank. That was then roughly one crore of rupees. In the year 2009, an IIM graduate was offered a salary package of Rs.1.44 crore per annum by Deutsche bank. In 2012, an IIM, Indore student was recruited by a Singapore-based Infrastructure firm on an annual salary package of Rs.53lakhs. These stories reveals the fact that why admissions in reputed Business schools are so popular in India. What makes the Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) degree so desirable is its guarantee on fat salary packages. Though the average salary package in 2014 is not at that excited level, IIMs still have managed to maintain an average salary of 15-17 lakhs per annum, which is a 10-15% higher than the previous year. (You should remember that the MBA job market is highly affected by macro economic trends. So a batch graduating in one particular year may be inundated with attractive job offers and stunning salaries, but a batch graduating a year later can find the situation totally different, because the economy and industry may have gone into a recession). So generally speaking, the fact is that, getting an admission into a good Indian B-school is just like giving a man a spade and telling him where the treasure is buried. That is why once a QS (World famous Quacquarelli Symonds, a British-based educational and careers advice company) Business school Report had said that the Indian MBA graduates are academically most distinguished. But we should not forget the fact that all MBA graduates do not get six-figure or eight figure

salaries. These salaries are usually offered only to the products of the top few B-schools in the country, the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and a few others. Indeed many blue chip companies have different salary packages and different career growth paths for graduates of the top B-schools and those coming from the lesser ones.

Eligibility for an MBA A bachelor’s degree (BA/BSc/B Com/BBA/BBM/BE/B Tech etc.) under the 10+2+3 system from a recognised or deemed university. Students appearing for final year graduate level exam can also apply.

Good Story of Indian MBA There are innumerable great personalities cut out by IIMsRBI Governor Raghuram Rajan (he was the ex-chief economist of the IMF and professor of finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business), Indra Nooyi, Chairman and CEO of PepsiCo., Sunil Gupta, professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and Chetan Bhagat, renowned author, columnist and motivational speaker, to name a few. Good story of Indian Management degree starts with India’s liberalisation and globalisation process. The biggest boom in the Indian economic reforms has created the business school (B-school) explosion in India. During that period a management degree has become the hottest and most coveted academic qualification in the country.

Flipside of Indian B-schools But during 2014, the story is different. For Ramesh Menon, a job hunt was a Herculian task. The reason is that he was a relatively new MBA graduate from a relatively new

50

EDUBEANS GUIDE 2014

B-school last year. After long search, he found a job with an ordinary salary in a Travel & Tourism company. He earns less than what he paid to get his MBA. So from the story of Ramesh Menon brings out the fact that if you have invested unwisely in Management education from institutions that are simply not respected by employers, your career path will not be a cakewalk. Now in India there are more than 4000 B-schools offering an MBA or PGDM. All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), accredited MBAs are highly recognised in India and now there are around 4.25 lakh AICTE-approved MBA seats are up for grabs. And there are around 65 MBA programmes are available from Finance to Entrepreneurship. So the available choices for an MBA-aspirant are plenty. Of late, the churn at the lower end of the B-school spectrum has begun and many institutes find it difficult to fill their seats. So the fact is that MBA education in India has been seeing a sort of consolidation. Those who have a history of reputation are gaining more brand appeal and cannot manage the rush of MBA-aspirants. But many run-of-the-mill and medium-class B-schools are struggling for survival. Low student enrollment and the heavy fall in campus recruitment (Campus recruitment have fallen by 40 %) are the major issues. Last year, around 180 B-schools have been closed in major cities of the country due to the lack of desired strength of the students. Another 150 MBA colleges are expected to close this year due to low student enrolment. Hundreds of MBA colleges are having 100 % placements only on paper. In many B-schools, the standard of pedagogy of MBA is gradually deteriorating. Even though the number of institutes offering management courses has risen, the quality of education being offered has declined sharply. There has been a sharp drop in registration for entrance examination

like the Common Admission Test (CAT). And lately, ASSOCHAM studies indicates only 10% of all MBA graduates from Indian B-schools are employable. So selecting an apt B-school is a herculian task for a student but it is most important at the same time. If one scores 99 percentile in CAT (Common Admission Test) and gets calls from all the top IIMs that is fine. Except IIMs, the top 50-150 B-schools are ok. But if you come down to a more low-ranking B-school, you have to take much caution. Here, you should take into consideration of the following factors: 1. Placement Most of the MBA-colleges offer 100 % placement record for their students. But you should cross check these claims with the students who are currently studying in the campus. Instead of focusing on high salary, you should try to know the average number of offers each student gets. 2. Faculty quality Try to know how many faculty members hold a PhD. Get answer for the question whether there is any faculty from US or Europe? Enquire this among the students of the college. 3. Students’ quality If the students are brighter, the learning programme will be richer. The students coming for the interview is a good sign to judge the quality of students. 4. Infrastructure: Computer lab, research, high-speed internet connection, Library, furnished class room- check the quality of everything. 5. Brand image: Do a research on Internent and various magazines to know about the brand image and ranking of the institute. 6. Location: This is a greater fact which influences the placement and the quality. Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai generally grab good placements due to the proximity to the corporate. 7. Affiliation: Check whether the institute is enjoying an affiliation programme with reputed foreign Universities.

Perform or perish Many management institutes today are more concerned with meeting their short term goals like achieving higher admission rates than providing quality management education. Now for a B-school in India, survival is getting tougher day

afer day. Many B-schools are now running through a perform or perish scenario. Continuous innovation is the only survival mantra for these precariously perched B-schools. Earlier, exam and marks count more than anything. Now personality counts. Development of personality is what the focus now. Companies also ready to accept both- the creative right brains and the analytical left brain of the employee. To make students employable, B-schools are adopting new methods. The focus should be developing skills, shaping attitude and encouraging talent, not merely on acquiring marks or degrees. 10 years before, the students were obedient, conformist and not that much aggressive. In circa 2014, you can see a brand new MBA student. New generation MBA graduates are more dynamic, forceful, unique and demanding. And they are looking at new avenues of growth and are trying to understand new businesses. Students and parents see MBA degrees as a shortcut to a better package, and judge them solely on placement and salary statistics. But recruitment companies are not satisfactory with the performance of the students. Four cornerstones of MBA has been broken now- Infrastructure quality is not upto the mark, Quality faculty is an alien, curriculum is outdated, Teaching pedgogy is rusted..... During the time of the recruitment, companies do not look at the reputation of the institute a student has studied at, but the skill of the student. Educational institutes should now aim towards developing the interest of students in research. Faculty should be carefully chosen to drive interest in research and knowledge creation. So many new tactics are adopting by B-schools for a better survivial and status-quo. Curriculum revamping, foreign collaborations, student diversity and strong placements are some of the face-changing exercises: Relooking curriculum B-Schools see this as an indication to focus on quality. That is why they are taking a thorough look at their curriculum every two years in partnership with the industry. MBA education is no longer seen just as an opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade. Realities and complexities of the industry and society is growing manifold. So it is a great challenge to sync your curriculum towards it. Student diversity Quality of an MBA is directly proportional to the the diversity of students. That is why leading B-schools too want to attract all kind of students to their programme. A multi-racial or multi-lingual campus can build a broad and EDUBEANS GUIDE 2014

51

healthy mindset among its students. They can take on the adversities with a calm mindset. Industry-academia interface Many B-schools do not have any tie-ups with corporates for campus recruitment. This leads to poor placements and salary packages that do not live up to the expectations of students. To ensure that students get placements after completing the course, B-schools should build partnerships with coporates. International accreditation Top B-schools are opting for international accreditations for gaining credibility. A leading B-school, Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad became India’s first B-school to be accredited by the AACSB. Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) is a US-based organisation which provides this accreditation. IIMs are also looking for International Benchmarking. EQUIS is a global benchmark of excellence for B-schools and IIMAhmedabad is the first Indian Institute to receive it. Experts think that these accreditation will help attract foreign students to Indian campus. Some B-school mavens think that these accreditations will also help pushing Indian B-schools to the top chart of Global Rankings. Quality faculty Many B-schools have taken immediate measures to improve the quality of their faculty. Whenever qualified and experienced teachers come, the pedagogy and the quality of students will improve. Poor compensation is the major reason for the lack of good teachers. Faculty in management institutes should be offered better pay to attract and retain more highly qualified and experienced teachers. Many B-schools have stolen limelight lately, after adding qualified teachers with PhD into their faculty.

65 MBA programmes in India It is said that more than 65 varieties of MBAs are available in India from finance to entrepreneurship. These specializations are born out of a thirst to build some competitive edge

on students. Preparing MBAs for industry-specific careers is with the belief that the industry would find these MBAs more relevant. New streams is the way forward Introducing new streams is one of the strategies to attract new students. So many strange streams are getting included in the MBA specialisations. MBA students’ thirst for entrepreneurship is a growing trend now. This change is a global trend. Instead of becoming a competent manager, they want to be a leader. By understanding this new trend, now MBA Institutes have decided to start a new specialization in MBA- Entrepreneurship. Apart from this many B-schools have kickstarted new specializations in MBA. MBA in Finance is a front runner The most popular MBA programmes were those pertaining to the finance sector, particularly those laying the foundations for entry in to investment banking and security firm roles. MBA in finance prepares you to become a finance specialist. There are plenty of avenues in career. MBA in Industrial Management Rekha, an engineering graduate has landed into a vortex of confusion over the specialization of MBA. Finally she gave into an MBA in Industrial Management at NITIE, Mumbai. This MBA delves deep into the operations and supply chain management and at the same time equipping students with marketing, finance and HR skills. This combination has made FMCG companies among the biggest recruiters at NITIE. Rekha is now an employee with Godrej Consumer Products with a fat pay package. MBA in international Management Management Development Institute, Gurgaon has a full time Postgraduate Diploma in International Management. In

these programme, students spend three terms in MDI campus and three terms in various Europe campuses. Most of the students after an internship in international companies will later pursue good career in India or aborad. MBA in Hospitality This helps to build a career in the hospitality industry includes opportunities in many different areas including events (exhibitions, sporting, concerts), conferences, banqueting, catering, resorts, airlines, cruise lines and many more service-related industries. MBA in Marketing, HR These are the two old specializations carry big career scopes. If you have a good organising and time management skills and are fair in treating others- HR may be perfect for you. If you are looking for the opportunity to grow and a career full of challeneges- then Marketing is your cup of tea. Specializations galore... New and attractive specialization is one of the differentiations which everybody wants to add to give a new zing to their MBA. Now specializations are available in Insurance and Risk Management, Health care, Hospital administration, International business, IT, Hospitality management, Clinical research, Infrastructure management, Hotel management, Operations management, Materials managements and Logistics in India. MBAs are also available in Retail Management, Agribusiness, Supply Chain Mangement, Petroleum Studies, Telecom Management, Media Management, Fashion Management, Event Management, and Textile Management and in many more odd streams also. The debate is still on about choosing a general MBA or a specialized one. Companies earlier prefer candidates with horizontal skills. But now this trend is changing slowly. Now recruiting companies are looking for some specialized skills in the candidates. You need a general foundation of management skills, but you cannot ignore vertical skills also.

How to get into best B-schools There are a slew of entrance tests which facilitates admissions to the reputed B-schools of India. CAT The king of B-school entrance in India is Common Admission Test (CAT) which leads into the admissions to the 16 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the leading B-schools of India. This is a computer-based test of 140 minutes. WESTERN COUNTRIES HAVE EMPHASISED RESEARCH: SUAD ALHALWACHI Ezone (accredited by Ministry of Higher Education UAE) is recognized throughout the region as one of the most dynamic ‘Study Abroad’ companies. It provides school students and university graduates with the exciting opportunity to study abroad. Ezone primarily deals with New Zealand educational institutions, but also has an extensive partner network within the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, Europe and Far East Asia. Saud Alhalwachi is the Managing Director of the EZone.

1. Can you brief the history of higher education in gulf countries? The gulf countries has a tradition for higher education as since the early 50’s. Its people were travelling abroad to study in top universities in the UK and Europe. Of course the people were also going as far as India, Egypt and Japan to study. Most of the gulf countries stated their Universities in the seventies, even though this didn’t stop us from going abroad to gain more qualification, learn from the culture over there and bring back not only education but a different way of life. 2.What all future challenges and opportunities do you foresee in higher education sector in Gulf? Since the early 90’s many universities had started to open its doors to branches in the gulf. As we speak we have over 87 universities in the UAE, more than 20 universities in Qatar, many in Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Most

of these universities are private depending mainly on expats living in these countries or students who are not allowed to enter the source universities due to visa issues. I believe that the trend is on the upward growth, and since most of these universities are private they all look for means to become high ranked and try to produce high quality research. The challenges are mainly in the ranking as whatever they do may not or will not be equivalent to what the ranked universities do, but I think they are trying. What we have in the gulf is strong family ties, new industries and commercial growth, so students coming to the gulf will experience this and may end up staying here. The only challenge in my mind is the residency, as our countries do not provide permanent residence due to our naturalization laws. I think EDUBEANS GUIDE 2014

that this may change in the future which will make studying and working in the gulf countries something equal, if not better than going west. 3. How do you rate MOOCs(massive open online courses)? Do you think MOOCs are good for students? Continuing education and adult learners is something that I have insisted upon since I started my consultancy; no one should stop learning, as the changes in technology, science, health and business is happening by the second and one cannot live without complete knowledge of these changes. MOOC is never to be evaluated, it is a must and it is necessary, and it is open to everyone on this earth. I am not a person that can say that this piece of information is good, indifferent or bad, I can recommend the courses to students and employees but it’s up to them to take up the courses. I feel though that it’s a pity that such resources are available for human beings and one will not benefit out of them. Nobody can say now that I wish that I studied this or that or the other, it is there, it is free, it is available and it is high quality, the only three things one has to put in is effort, time and perseverance. 4. Do you think the elite colleges (including Stanford, Harvard and MIT) promoting MOOCs are not only endangering less elite institutions but also undercutting themselves? No I don’t think so, because knowledge is free and everyone believes this, but when it comes to certifications, then one has to pay for it, as one will be using that knowledge for further gains. 5. Do you think MOOCs could be disastrous for both students and professors? I Think MOOC is revolutionary, and it’s something that should have been done from time memorial, of course prior to the internet revolution the TV could have been used for MOOC, which means we have to have manpower, which was a major inhabitant, or courses will be printed, which again is costly. Having MOOC courses online means that we are allowing the public to benefit “for free” from the knowledge the universities are selling, in the time the public has, which was utilized in watching soap opera. MOOC is a great thing as the parents can be involved with the same courses the son or daughter is taking, which means three for the price of one. Plus it’s high time that the universities start giving to the public instead of continuously taking. 6. Do you think a higher education degree should provide ROI (Return on Investment)? Yes and no. Yes because the students need to use that qualification for finding jobs or doing business; no because we all need to be educated.

7. What are the preferences of the students of UAE regarding with Higher education? Do you think there are still less options in front a student beyond Medicine and Engineering? Unfortunately we have business, medicine and engineering only, and the focus is on these three items. We need to have law, humanities, art and other faculties for a better balance. 8. How do you compare pursuing a higher education program in a foreign country and do the same in a branch campus of a foreign university in Dubai? As I mentioned above branch campuses are established for two reasons, to attract students that cannot go overseas for any reason, and to make money. It is a good thing as they will try to replicate the good work happening in the main campus or inter-benefit. One can combat the disadvantages by starting study abroad and exchange programs. However, to me studying abroad is far better as we gain more from being independent, and seeing how others live. 9. What is your take on the fact that the Middle-east countries are still an under-penetrated market as far as higher education is concerned? To begin with I must emphasise the main benefit of higher education, which is research. When one does research one has to have the ability to say everything. So if we continue to prevent people from doing research and discussing the results freely, then we cannot have good education. 10. How do you rate Britain, US, Australia, Canada, India and Pakistan in higher education studies? Why Pakistan or India? Every country puts a value on higher education as it’s a multi-billion dollar industry, and because of this the west (and some of the southern hemisphere countries like New Zealand and Australia) have emphasised research to make the universities of a high standard, I am not sure about the applicability of this factor in Pakistan or India. 11. Which are the good programs having potential can bring a better job in Gulf countries? Media, Journalism, entrepreneurship, marine biology, hospitality, tourism, and of course the traditional courses such as medicine, engineering, architecture, design, IT etc. 12. Do you think the rising cost of education will be an impediment factor for a quality higher education? We all would rather die of hunger than stop our children from gaining a higher education qualification, so the cost is not a factor 

especially, is one of Mr Thumbay’s most impressive achievements. But he is not ready to rest on his laurels. GMU is not only the first institution in the UAE to accept students of both genders from all nationalities; it is a melting pot of international culture. He is one of the business magnets, who is listed in the “Forbes Middle East’s Top 100 Indian Leaders in the UAE”. We would like to unravel new plans, philosophy and ethics of the one and only Thumbay Moideen in a

free-wheeling chat with Edubeanz: 1. Can you brief about the higher education scenario in gulf countries? As per a recent report published about higher education in the region, the UAE’s private education sector is among the fastest growing in the world. Population growth and easy access to services has made the UAE one of the top education destinations in the Middle East. Interestingly, Dubai has now

outpaced the UK in attracting students from the Middle East and has become the third most popular destination (followed by France and the US) for students from the region, according to figures released by the UNESCO. 2. As a leader of Medical education, how do you see the challenges and opportunities ? Way back in 1997, I was asked by the Government of Ajman to establish a medical college in Ajman. I took up the offer and in a way, accidentally jumped into education and healthcare. Once the college was established, we focused all our efforts in making the institution one of the best in the region, and we succeeded. Today students from over 70 countries pursue their education at our university in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Physical Therapy. We also offer masters programs in Clinical Pathology, Toxicology, Human

Reproductive Biology, Public Health and Physiotherapy. Faculty and staff from over 22 countries work in the organization. Later, we were the first to establish the first private teaching hospital in the region. Even establishing a hospital was a big challenge as we did not get enough support from the existing government hospitals and facilities. But, due to God’s Grace, our perseverance and hard work, we are today one of the biggest healthcare providers in the country. 3. Do you want to reach out other Medical institutions outside UAE in future? Yes. We are being approached by many countries to set-up campuses based on GMU model. It is based on our success in UAE. Others are reaching out to us to establish similar campuses in their countries to offer international standard healthcare education. We are studying

some proposals, and working on our strategic plans. 4. Is this part of a globalization of your medical education dream? As per our strategic plan and Vision 2020, we are planning to establish 3-5 campuses in different countries. Plans to initiate more courses are in the pipeline. The GMC Hospitals, first private university teaching hospital plans to establish over 15 hospitals in the region in the next 5-7 years. 5. How do you forsee Medical Education landscape in UAE? The country is witnessing an increase in the number of private players in the higher education segment, which cater to a growing number of youth. It is driven by the rising importance of high-quality education, backed by the governments, who acknowledge the need for an education system capable of producing competent professionals.

6. The Mission of the Gulf Medical University is to strengthen and promote excellence in medical education, biomedical research and patient care. Can you elaborate more about your mission? Research will be the main focus area along with education and healthcare. The university has established Center for Advanced Biomedical Research & Innovation (CABRI) to pursue excellence in biomedical research that shall have an impact on the education and the outcome of clinical care and Center for Advanced Simulation in Healthcare (CASH) - a multidisciplinary educational facility that provides high-tech simulated and virtually created hospital set-up for clinical and communication skills teaching and training for students and health care professionals. To the maximum extent possible, we apply our core missions in education, research, and healthcare delivery to develop the means to solve national and regional healthcare problems, including providing accessible, cost-effective healthcare of measurable quality. In view of the high level of competition at every level, only a good quality education helps a person achieve and grow in life, thus contributing positively to the society. 7. What were the challenges of setting up the Gulf Medical University? From the beginning, we had a clear vision in what we wanted to do. Especially in medical education and healthcare, we have to catch with ever changing needs of the society. We have provided the best education and quality healthcare, which generated loyal clientele. Added to this we have a highly qualified faculty and doctors who contributed to our success. We had a great support from the Rulers and the ministries in

all our endeavors. GMU is the first medical university started by an expatriate in U.A.E. recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research, U.A.E. It is the first institution to accept students of both genders and from all nationalities. It currently has a global composition of the university community made up of an international faculty drawn from 22 countries and a student cohort from 70 countries. GMU is also the first institution to have launched a private teaching hospital (GMC Hospital) in the country, enabling the students to pursue their clinical training and thus serving people from over 175 nationalities to get high quality healthcare at affordable costs. We have started Summer Training Program - a unique program which places senior clinical students into reputed hospitals and healthcare institutions around the globe to experience the best of clinical training. It also offers Residency programs in Germany. 8. A big revolution in the field of Medical Education in China is going on now. They offer Medical degrees for a reasonable price. How do you look at that? It is not the question of offering

programs at a reasonable price as you mention. It is about the quality of education that is offered at affordable price. In view of the high level of competition at every level, only a good quality education helps a person achieve and grow in life, thus contributing positively to the society. 9. What are the preferences of the students of UAE regarding with Higher education? The standard of education in UAE is very high and is of international standards. The visionary leadership of the country has made possible for the entry of private educational institutions and international universities. Prospective students can look forward to good education in the country. The Emiratis and the expatriates are increasingly turning towards private education institutions, especially in higher education, due to the quality of the programs that are being offered. 10. How do you compare pursuing a higher education program in a foreign country and do the same in a branch campus of a foreign university in Dubai? I have already mentioned about the standards of higher education in UAE. Challenges are being addressed by the authorities on a regular basis. Focusing on strengths, a number

of international universities have campuses or programs in the UAE. Establishment of special zones, including Dubai Knowledge Village and Academic City have enabled many international campuses to be set up in UAE offering a wide range of courses for the students. 11. What is your opinion that the Middle-east countries are still an under-penetrated market as far as higher education is concerned? Today, this observation may not be true. The higher education is gaining momentum from governments across the region. With increased focus on improving the quality and reach of education in the region, the universities are offering better job opportunities upon completion of education, which is encouraging an inflow of students. Technology is being used to the best advantage of education. This is the emerging trend now, and governments are also giving top priority.

12. Which are the good programs having potential to bring a better job in Gulf countries? All our programs are of international standards. The programs are designed and developed by our own expert faculty. All our programs are accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education, UAE. The immense popularity and relevance of the institution can be gauged from the fact that every year, the GMU receives over 6,000 applications for admission to medical and healthcare programs offered by the university, out of which only 500 applicants are selected for the interview, and 200 are enrolled. Scholarships and education grants are based on academic merit. 13. Do you think the rising cost of education will be an impediment factor for a quality higher education? I don’t think so. Students and parents are focusing on quality education, which comes at a price. More than

cost, quality of the program, teaching and training standards are given more importance. In fact as per a study, the growth of education sector is driven by factors like the rising importance of high-quality education in the society, and a growing spending capacity. We should also consider that providing high quality education and training, costs the institution a lot of money, to sustain, survive and grow. That is one of the reasons for high costs of education. To help the students, Thumbay Group UAE has launched Care & Share Program to sponsor economically deserving but academically brilliant students. Presently about 20% of the students are sponsored through this program, which will increase to 80% in the next five years. We also source funding from Sheikhs, Philanthropists and Corporates, which helps us attract cream of the students to pursue their higher education in our institution
