Verify the card 1. Verify the First 4 Digits

• Below the first 4 digits of the card number embossed with raised numbers, or laser printed on the face of the card, these same first 4 digits are printed in much smaller print. • Check that these 4 digits are the same. • If not, refuse to do the transaction.

2. Verify the last 4 Digits

• Compare the last 4 digits of the card number to the 4 digits printed on the signature pad at the back of the card (next to the CVV number) • Check that these 4 digits are the same. • If not, refuse to do the transaction.

3. Compare Visible Card Numbers

• Compare the visible card numbers on card to the card number on the electronic slip. • When too busy check the last 4 digits of these card numbers. • These must match.

4. Suspicious cards

• Take note of embossed card numbers which appears unusual or of uneven type or style. • This is suspect and may indicate that the card is counterfeit. • Refuse to do the transaction and call the Merchant Services Authorization Centre on 011 369 2888 to report a Code 10.

Manual Entry Process It is vital to follow these steps when processing a manual entry transaction to protect yourself from chargeback’s, in accordance with your Merchant Agreement: 1. Manual entry vouchers may only be used on embossed cards. 2. Obtain an authorisation code by contacting the FNB Authorisations Centre on 011 369 0012 to confirm the card is valid and that there are available funds on the card. 3. Open your manual voucher booklet and place the card in the space provided on the wraparound sleeve. 4. Place three vouchers over the card. 5. Rub over the voucher in the area of the card until the card details leave a clear imprint. Remove the credit card. 6. The card holder must sign all three vouchers and you must verify the signature to that on the card. 7. Fill in all the information on the right hand side of the voucher. 8. Remove the top voucher and hand it to the cardholder. 9. Ensure that all voucher booklets are stored in a cool, dry place.

** If a transaction is electronically declined DO NOT attempt a manual entry.

Tips to protect your eCommerce business from fraud 1. Ensure your business is 3D secure so that all transactions are authenticated by the issuing bank. 2. Be cautious of: • • • • •

Circumstances when the billing and shipping address do not match. The same card being used multiple times within a short space of time. The same card being used to order multiple quantities at the same time. Be cautious of the same user making purchases from different IP addresses. A card which has had several unsuccessful ordering attempts before the transaction is approved.

The following statistics are key findings / consumer usage trends identified by Effective Measure through the Digital Industry Survey: • • • • •

In January 2016, South Africa had 38 million unique Internet browsers. South Africa’s top websites served more than 1.1 billion page views. An average of 5 minutes and 24 seconds is spent to view pages. Websites were mostly viewed by age groups 20-29 years (31%), 30-39 years (25%) and 40-49 years (18%). 54% of the total views came from mobile devices.

• Residents in the Western Cape have been identified as having greater access to the Internet than the national average: - 93.8% of individuals have access to the Internet via a mobile phone. - 38% of households have a computer with ADSL internet access. - Internet users spend an average of 20.1% of their monthly income on Internet connectivity. • The top 3 industries with the highest online consumer usage include: - News / Newspaper; - Commercial / Retail; and - Entertainment.

Key Insights: • More consumers are researching or browsing on their mobile devices, which creates many business opportunities. • Businesses need to establish a strong online presence, via the Internet or mobile apps, to benefit from the growth in mobile web traffic. This will enable businesses to: - Expand their market reach; - Increase their sales, as there is no time limit on customer purchases; and - Ensure stronger client retention. • To take advantage of the growth in mobile phone usage, retailers should continue to optimise their website experience and ensure they are providing useful information to the customer who intends to buy online as well as those who intend to buy offline.
