Each year, thousands of tourists enjoy the unique experience of discovering France by train. The high speed trains developed in France are known as TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse = High Speed Train) With 149 destinations and speeds of up to 300 km/h (186 mph), the TGV is the best way to visit the various regions of France. The exceptional comfort and the range of services available to customers have made it a commercial success. In this relaxed atmosphere, passengers can read a book, write a postcard to a friend, make a phone call or just have a meal, relax and enjoy the smooth train ride.

The Northern high speed line has brought Northern France and Europe closer to the rest of France: Paris is now only 1 hour from Lille, 2 hours 35 minutes from London, via the Channel Tunnel, and 1 hour 25 from Brussels. The TGV network is no longer centralized in Paris. It is possible to go directly from Northern France to Brittany or the Loire Valley, but also to the south of France. Most importantly, for tourists coming from overseas, the main tourist regions of France are now accessible directly from Charles de Gaulle Airport. 36 TGVs a day stop at this station, offering a wide range of connections to flights arriving at the airport. France

With 906,000 kilometers (562,000 miles) covered daily by its trains, SNCF (French National Railroads) offers the traveler the easiest and most comfortable way to discover the scenic regions of France.

The South East TGV has been running for 15 years. It links Paris to Lyon and the South of France (Avignon, Marseille, Nice) but also Geneva, Lausanne and the Swiss Alps The TGV Atlantique carries over 40 000 passengers a day.It not only links Paris to the West of France, Brittany and the coast, but also the South West.

Most of the lines run through “tourist country”, presenting continuous panoramas of unspoiled scenic beauty. The best known is the 470 km -290 mile- line that crosses the high mountain range between Oslo and Bergen. For a distance of about 100 kilometers (62 miles) the trains run across a windswept and treeless mountain plateau, awesome in its bleak solitude. The Flåm Railway (private railway) winds its way down the mountainsides from the junction at Myrdal on the Oslo-Bergen line, descending 866 meters (0.54 miles) in 20 kilometers (12 miles), to Flåm on the Aurlandsfjord. Besides being a magnificent scenic attraction it is a masterly feat of railway engineering. The journey by the Dovre line from Oslo through the Gudbrandsdal valley, crossing the Dovre mountains at 1025 meters (0.64 miles) above sea level, is a memorable experience. It affords you a cross-section of Norway’s inland countryside, from broad farmlands, lakes and forests to narrow valleys, green glacial rivers, waterfalls and mountain plateaus, rich in flora and unique birdlife. The 114 km -71 mile- Rauma line from Dombås to Åndalsnes almost equals the Flåm line, both in grandeur of its wild scenery and as a triumph of engineering. From Dombås the line snakes through the valleys and gorges of an alpine massif, down to Åndalsnes, at the head of Isfjorden, encircled by mountains. The South Coast line, linking Oslo, Kristiansand and Stavanger, is another scenic adventure, offering opportunities to make detours to coastal resorts and the outer islands. Another great tourist attraction is the Nordland line. Stretching 730 kilometers (453 miles) from Trondheim to Bodø. It is NSB’s longest main line and one of the few railways in the world to cross the arctic circle. NSB’s shortest service main line is the 42 km -26

mile- Ofoten line from Narvik to the Swedish border. Few 45-minute journeys can offer such a variety and immense contrasts from the fertile fields and hillsides of the lowlands, with magnificent vistas of blue fjord and towering peaks, to the wildest of the high mountains plateau. NB: Only 2nd class ticket is required for travel in sleeping cars

EuroCity (EC), InterCity (IC), Express (Ex) and hotel trains offer quality transportation in Poland. The traveling times of EC and IC trains can easily compete with those of cars and airplanes. The InterCity passenger network comprises 20 major towns with regular-interval service on several routes. The network consists of 16 InterCity trains and 1 international, namely IC “Wawel” from Hamburg to Kraków via Berlin, Wroclaw and Katowice. The EuroCity trains connect Vienna with Warsaw and Kraków (EC “Sobieski”), Prague and Warsaw (EC “Praha”) and also Budapest and Bratislava with Warsaw (EC “Polonia”). Between Berlin and Warsaw via Pozna´n run 3 daily “Berlin-WarsawaExpress”(BWE) trains, and 1 BWE train from Berlin to Pozna´n (on Fridays and Sundays). InterCity trains run at a speed of up to 160 km/h on the Central Trunk Main line (CMK) and on the Warsaw-Berlin line. All EuroCity (BWE) and 10 of the Intercity trains have air-conditioned coaches. They offer short traveling times, a high standard of passenger service and catering. The total length of the EC/IC network is 4,060 km (2,500 miles).

On the routes from Gdynia to Zakopane, from Kraków to Kolobrzeg and from Warsaw to Szczecin/Swinoujscie hotel trains are in operation consisting exclusively of sleeping cars and couchettes. The trains do not stop at intermediate stations and remain locked during the journey. Interregional traffic (long distance fast and slow trains) forms a significant completion of the EC, IC and Express trains network. Wheelchair passengers can travel in specially adapted coaches. Some of the trains operating in domestic relations carry these kinds of coaches. The InterCity “Chrobry”(Warsaw - Pozna´n Sczcecin) carries an air-conditioned 2nd class coach that is adapted to the transportation of disabled persons.

“RETRO” JOURNEYS A network of narrow-gauge railways offers attractive routes for sentimental journeys. PKP offers journeys through picturesque corners of Poland on trains composed of old locomotives and coaches. If required by customers, the program includes viewing historical objects, photo stops and picnics at a campfire.

3 INTERCITY

The inaugural journey of the Railway in Portugal dates back to the 28th October 1856. At the beginning of the 20th century several public and private companies co-existed, which have been merged into the Companhia dos Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses in 1951. The Company was nationalized in 1975 and renamed CP - Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses, EP, as it is known today.

The Intercity Service links all the main cities of the Country (about 60) to Lisboa and Porto. The timetable is planned in such a way that trains arrive at one of the cities relatively early and return to the city of departure at the end of the day, allowing for the longest possible one-day stay. The price of the Intercity Service is quite competitive with the other transport modes, attracting about 2 million travellers a year. Intercity Trains run on the following routes: ■ Lisboa-Porto-Guimarães ■ Porto S.Bento-Régua ■ Lisboa-Leiria ■ Lisboa-Guarda ■ Lisboa-Covilhã ■ Lisboa-Faro ■ Lisboa-Beja

Slovak Railways (ZSR) was established on January 1, 1993 by the Slovak Governmental Decree on the Establishment of the State-owned Slovak Railways and the subsequent Slovak National Council Law dated September 30, 1993. This was a consequence of the split of the former Czechoslovakia which resulted in the break up of the former Czechoslovak State Railways into two independent railways The construction of railways in Slovakia, a country of 49,036 km2, began during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The first railroad, a horse-powered railroad between Bratislava and Sered, was built between 1839 and 1846. The first steam-powered train arrived in Bratislava on August 20, 1848, from Vienna. ZSR has 3665 km of railways following rivers, running through mountain valleys, and in some places reaching the base of high mountains. The highest altitude train station, at 1320 meters above sea level, is the Strbske Pleso train station in the High Tatras. The lowest altitude station, at 101

meters above sea level, is the Streda nad Bodrogom train station. Slovakia has mountainous terrain, which creates difficulties for railway construction. These difficulties are reflected in the fact that 252 kilometers of main tracks are curves with a radius of less than 300 meters and 814 kilometers of main tracks have a slope gradient of more than 1 percent. The railways have more than 2361 bridges, with a total length of more than 47 kilometers, and 76 tunnels, with a total length of more than 43 kilometers. Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is an intersection of all types of transportation: train, ship, road, and air. The completion of the Rhine-Mohan-Danube Channel and the Gabcikovo Dam, downstream from Bratislava, made Slovakia the center of the water route between the North and the Black Seas. This made ZSR’s rail network even more important. Internet: www.zsr.sk

SZ, Slovenske Zeleznice, the Railways of Slovenia have the following types of trains: ■ InterCity Slovenija trains (ICS) run all the year round from/to Ljubljana to/from Maribor, in the summer season also to the Slovenian coast from Maribor to Koper. These trains consist of comfortable air-conditioned carriages. They have shorter travel times, few stops, and offer snack service. These modern tilting trains are capable of reaching speeds up to 30% higher on the existing lines. The seat reservation is obligatory. ■ Local and regional trains that cover shorter distances throughout the country. Most of them are the new Siemens trains. ■ International trains (MV). These are quality trains that offer fast and reliable connections from Slovenia to other countries. ■ InterCity trains (IC). These are quality trains that cover long distances on national and international routes. ■ EuroCity trains (EC). These are high-quality international trains that have modern, comfortable and air conditioned carriages. They offer some additional services such as restaurant car and telephone facilities.

Future Network Developments For national transportation the restructuring of suburban transport is one of the future strategic objectives. It is envisaged that all basic transport operators will be combined in one comprehensive organizational structure. Thirty new Siemens suburban trains have been introduced to run on the Slovenian network in the 2001 - 2003. These trains are constructed on the basis of the most recent technical and technological solutions and belong to the latest generation of European railway vehicles. A second important innovation is the purchase of Pendolino InterCity trains.

Slovenia

The railroad network serving passenger traffic covers 1,201 kilometers (750 miles) of which almost half are electrified tracks.

Spain: RENFE The state-run company RENFE covers a large number of lines which connect all the regions and main cities. RENFE together with other trains supply a range of high quality, comfort and punctuality. Therefore in the main cities there is a local network which connects small towns. In Madrid, there are nine lines with frequencies less than 5 minutes and the punctuality is 95%. Most of the trains supply additional services such as phone, snack bar and restaurant. The high speed train AVE Madrid-Cordoba-Sevilla runs over 300 kilometers (186 miles) per hour. Highspeed trains also serve other destinations such as Malaga, Cadiz and Huelva. High quality trains running over 200 kilometers (124 mph) link: ■ Barcelona to Valencia and Alacant (Euromed) ■ Madrid to Valencia (Alaris) ■ Madrid to Alacant, Barcelona, Cádiz, Huelva and Pamplona (Altaria) Madrid is a central town from where every traveler can easily reach any destination. For example from Madrid to Valencia or Alacant the journey takes less than 4 hours. RENFE also supplies Train-Hotel services between several cities. Among the large range of trains RENFE emphasize the AVE, Altaria and Hotel-train In the local network Spain has at one’s disposal the newest trains in Europe, called “Cercanias”

International relations: Hotel trains between MadridLisboa, Madrid-Paris, Barcelona-Paris, BarcelonaMilan and Barcelona-Zurich are high quality night trains. These trains leave in the evening and arrive early in the morning. International daytrains: Barcelona-Montpellier and Cartagena-Montpellier

Airports BARAJAS (MADRID) A new subway services the city every 5 minutes. Travel time 20 minutes. A bus service links the airport with some different places in town every 15 minutes. The journey takes approximately 25 minutes (by taxi it takes around 15 minutes).

EL PRAT (BARCELONA) A train links the airport with the station Barcelona Sants every 30 minutes. The journey takes 25 minutes.

Sweden: SJ

Between Sweden’s major cities the tilting highspeed train X2000 takes you from city centre to city centre with extremely high service level and comfortable, large seats offering you plenty of space. (For more details, see chapter “high speed trains”).

DAY TRAINS: Most cities of Sweden are connected with modern, high quality daytime trains with 1st and 2nd class coaches. Most of them have a trolley service or a bistro coach, telephone box and family cars. In 1st class free coffee and Swedish newspapers are included in the service.

NIGHT TRAINS Night train is a very convenient way of travel in a country of Sweden’s size - more than 1,600 kilometers (990 miles) long - for example to the midnight sun north of the arctic circle. You can choose between your own individual sleeping compartment with toilette, shower, hairdryer, air-conditioned and a compartment with two or three beds, in ladies’ and men’s versions. Certain trains have radio and automatic wake up system. Swedish night trains always carry a great number of sleeping cars, but of course also less expensive couchettes. In the couchettes you have a choice between a mixed compartment with 6 beds or ladies-only. Night train routes: Stockholm-Malmö, StockholmÖstersund/Storlien + NSB day train connection to Trondheim, Stockholm-Umeå/Luleå/Kiruna/Narvik, Göteborg-Östersund/Storlien + NSB day train connection to Trondheim, Göteborg-Umeå/Luleå + NSB day train connection to Narvik. (NSB: Norwegian State Railways)

GO TO THE CINEMA AT 120 KM/H (74 mph) On some night trains you can enjoy both a meal and a visit to the only cinema coach in the world, in the combined cinema and bistro car. The films are shown on a large screen in a cinema with for up to 32 persons. These services are available on the routes Stockholm-Storlien, Göteborg-Storlien and Göteborg-Luleå.

Reservations must be made for all trains in Sweden. This can, however, be made until the train’s departure. For reservations on night trains, we recommend you to book as early as possible due to the great demand.

ALLERGIES Non-smoking areas are available on all trains and at all stations. In non-smoking areas, animals are not allowed. All bedding material in sleeping compartments is made from synthetic materials. Animals are not allowed in sleeping compartments.

Airports ARLANDA (STOCKHOLM) The shuttle service between Arlanda Airport and Stockholm Central Station is operated by the private company Arlanda Express with modern, comfortable trains. Journey time just 20 minutes. All Eurail Passes and Eurail tickets are valid on the Arlanda Express. Most of the trains running from Stockholm to the north (to Uppsala, Gävle/Sundsvall, Borlänge/Falun/Mora, etc.) take the route via Arlanda Airport so that you can travel directly from the airport to your destination in the northern part of Sweden.

Switzerland

European Railways

Switzerland: SBB/CFF/FFS Efficient -reliable- scenic: the airport gateways at Zurich and Geneva are directly connected to the main Swiss railroad network - some 5000 km (3100 miles) in length and the densest transport network in the world. Efficiently organized and developed, the Swiss Transport System guarantees in most cases very short waiting times when changing trains. “A train an hour” applies for all major destinations. Trains are well equipped, and many carry dining cars or beverage trolleys. Beside the train network, an extensive bus network carries tourists in comfort to remote regions and nearby locations. Crossing a mountain pass by bus ranks among the world’s most exciting experiences. Some 500 funiculars, cable cars and other means also make Swiss excursion destinations accessible. Arriving by plane? Luggage claiming at Swiss airports is not necessary. Passenger arrivals at Zurich or Geneva Airport can check baggage from their departure airport straight through to many Swiss destinations. Baggage will be delivered direct to the required railway station to be picked up. Returning air travelers can mail luggage directly to their home airport from some railway stations. Confirmed air tickets and train tickets should be shown.

Arriving by train? There are many international trains that connect the European countries to Switzerland: ■ TGV runs from Paris direct to the Swiss cities of Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Neuchâtel and Zürich. In winter, one TGV every Saturday connects Paris with Brig and the ski fields of Zermatt and Saas Fee. ■ The ICE connects Frankfurt, Hamburg and Berlin to Basel, Zurich, Bern and Interlaken in the Jungfrau Region ■ The Cisalpino will shorten traveling time to and from Italy (Milano, Venezia, Cinque Terre, La Spezia) with connections to Lausanne, Geneva, Basel, Bern, Brig and Zürich/Stuttgart. ■ Various night trains (“EuroNight”, “Talgo pendular”, “CityNightLine”) with modern standards and high service quality connect Switzerland with cities like Vienna, Rome, Hamburg, Berlin, Amsterdam, Dresden and Barcelona. Taking a night train lets passengers enjoy a comfortable sleep and arrive well rested at their destination in the morning, ready for a day of sightseeing. And every hour or half-hour, air conditioned Intercity trains with dining cars, mini-bars and children’s playroom cars bring passengers to all Swiss cities from where numerous regional trains bring you to lovely villages in maxi-comfort. For tourists, the journey itself is often the objective. The Swiss Transport System is based on this idea, to let traveling become an experience. Internet: www.rail.ch
