Fourth Week of Advent The Angels’ Candle Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” — Luke 2:13-14

Merici Chapel… Time passes so swiftly; before we realize, Christmas morning will be here. Will your heart and soul be ready to receive Jesus to celebrate His Birthday? With all your holiday plans, make time to visit Jesus in Merici Chapel — it will be a relaxing and rewarding visit.

December 18, 2016 This Sunday morning, at the 10:30am Mass, we will thank Father Edward Janoch for his two and onehalf years of faithful ministry to the people of St Charles. Bishop Lennon has transferred Father Ed, effective Saturday, December 31, to St Mary Parish in Chardon. There are only two priests at St Mary and they also care for St Patrick Parish in Thompson. The current associate at St Mary’s has been made a pastor in Akron and, therefore, an associate is needed immediately at St Mary’s. Hence, this unexpected mid-year transfer for Father Ed. Immediately after Mass, there will be a Farewell Reception for Father Janoch in the Lower Parish Hall. For those who would like to keep in touch, here’s Father Janoch’s new address after January 1 2017: Father Edward J Janoch St Mary Parish 401 North Street Chardon, Ohio 44024 There is a second collection at Mass this weekend for the Sisters’ Retirement Fund. Today there are fewer young nuns to help support the many ill and elderly Sisters. The Good Sisters did heroic work in so many areas of church life. And they did it with little thought of earthly reward. Now they are in need and we have this opportunity to help them. Other than our Fifth Sunday St Vincent de Paul collections, and a mention when the missionary visits in the summer, you rarely hear from me about second collections. But I always make an exception for the Sisters’ Retirement Fund; please do the best you can. This weekend, we light the fourth candle on our Advent wreath reminding us that Christmas is now only days away. Why not catch some of the Spirit of the Season by attending the Christmas Concert this Sunday evening, December 18, at 7:00pm in church? The internationally known Franciscan Friar Alessandro and the St Charles Youth and Children’s Choirs will present songs of the season. Friar Alessandro has just completed a concert in New York as well as taping a television special. There is no charge for the Sunday concert, but your free-will offering will benefit Sister Denise Marie’s Franciscans of the Little Way. If you plan to participate in our 2016 Advent Giving Tree, please have your gifts in church by 1:00pm this Sunday. All gifts will be sorted, distributed, and delivered at that time. Please consult the Christmas schedule in this bulletin for the times of Christmas confessions and Masses. The Christmas Eve Masses are usually heavily attended. You can be assured of an available seat at every Mass on Christmas Day. And yes, St Charles Christmas Midnight Mass is at Twelve Midnight! Looking for a good book—to give or to receive? Check out Real People, Real Presence: Ordinary Catholics on the Extraordinary Power of the Eucharist, published by The Word Among Us Press (www.wordamongus.org). Many of you tell me that it is the custom in some parishes to suggest a certain amount for the Christmas collection, such as “one hundred dollars” or “one day’s pay” or whatever. I haven’t made such a request in thirty years, nor will I this year. I do know that Christmas is a time for great generosity. I hope you will be generous, but whatever you choose to do will certainly be much appreciated and, I promise you, will be put to good use.
