This corner house had all of the judges looking up in amazement. An enormous Christmas tree with brilliantly bright presents stands over 16-feet-tall in the center of this display. Surrounding it, giant palm trees are neatly wrapped in lights from top to bottom giving this yard one of the most professional looks of the neighborhood. The entire lawn is encircled with golden lights, and a projection of merry greetings on the side of the house makes this one worth a look. continued on page 2

#5—948 Countrywood Court— COZY CHRISTMAS AWARD Get ready to see something you would normally only see inside—a complete sofa set with a real working fireplace! Not only does this cozy scene remind us of gathering around the fire, it also delights with golden icicles, a nativity scene, and a comical road sign indicating the famous three kings have come from “Afar” to Bethlehem to see the baby Jesus. Many of our readers wrote in about this one, and once you see it, you’ll agree with them.

Willy Wonka himself would be delighted by this sweet escape. The home is sprinkled with candy treats that made all of our judges hungry—from the lollipops on the lawn and shutters to the candy cane archway over the porch, this home is completely yummy. A trio of lights arch over the driveway and inflatables line the walk; you won’t want to miss this one. There are truly so many wonderful displays, and we couldn’t mention them all, but here are some of the honorable mentions and the award winners:

RHS Pool Named for Teacher

Letters to the Editor Over a year ago, I wrote a letter to the editor of this paper, decrying the unacceptable state of the trash and filth that Old Town businesses allow to accumulate on the sidewalks and curbs n front of their establishments, Specifically, I am referring the businesses that occupy the north end of Clark Ave, between N 1st St and Broadway. Regrettably, these unsightly (if not unsanitary) conditions persist, and I would like the business owners to assume responsibility for cleaning up the mess on their sidewalks and their streets. Perhaps they could use their influence with the county to request a street sweeping machine come through on a weekly/monthly basis? Regardless of how they do it, it needs to be done out of respect for their businesses and their customers. Also, I offer the following observation: as I stand outside an eating establishment in this location on a Saturday morning,

I notice a majority of the trash consists of the following: cigarette butts, empty cigarette packs, beer cans/bottles, and discarded mini/pint bottles of liquor. I do not believe it takes a master detective to conclude this detritus primarily originates with the patrons of the bar located on this street. The irony of all this? This drinking establishment actually ensures the sidewalk/street immediately in front of the property is cleaned-up the morning after, though they seem oblivious or just don't care their patrons don't recognize the "borders" of their business. On a final note, I would ask our local citizens that are the source of the litter to take some pride in their town, and refrain from degrading it with their careless and unwanted littering. Find an ashtray or a trashcan -- its the right thing to do. Rich Schoonmaker Orcutt

The Santa Maria Joint Union High school District Board of Education voted to name the Righetti High School pool complex after a Warrior teacher and co-coach of water polo and swimming during Tuesday night’s school board meeting. It’s now called the “Rob Knight Aquatic Center”. Mr. Knight has been a Spanish teacher at RHS since 1990. “This is a huge overwhelming honor,’’ Knight said. “Thanks to all the current and former players who made it happen.’’ The request was made to the school board members by former students

Orcutt Pioneer ~ December 14, 2016 Orcutt Schools Update

Measure G Gratitude Dr. Debbie Blow, Superintendent, OUSD On behalf of the students, families, and staff of the Orcutt Union School District, I would like to thank everyone in the community who supported Measure G, the district school bond measure that was on the ballot November 8. As of this writing, Measure G has accumulated a “yes” vote of 57.3 percent, which means it is very likely to have more than the 55 percent required for passage when the election is certified December 6. Measure G represents an enormous opportunity to improve school facilities districtwide. As previously discussed in this column, proceeds from the $60 million bond measure will repair and replace deteriorated roofs, plumbing, restrooms, and electrical systems; improve school safety/security systems, fencing, and disabled access; replace aging portable classrooms with permanent classrooms; upgrade the district’s technology infrastructure to support programs in science, math, reading, and the arts; and add classrooms to avoid overcrowding. “We are very thankful for the support

our community has given our schools. says Rob Buchanan, a longtime member of Orcutt’s board of trustees. “We’ll be good stewards of the funding we receive from Measure G. We all can look forward to the district improving the learning environment for our kids in a fiscally prudent manner.” Once the election results are certified, the district has many follow-up tasks. District administration and the school board will need to meet with the district’s financial consultant, architectural firm, and construction management firm regarding implementation of Measure G. The board will need to identify which projects in the district’s facilities master plan are most important. And the board will need to appoint an independent citizens’ oversight committee that will ensure that bond proceeds are being used only for the purposes set forth in the ballot argument. “The board is going to set priorities for projects and the timeline for those projects,” says Walter Con, the district’s

assistant superintendent for business services. “I’m really excited for what all of this will do for our kids and our staff.” In the months to come, we will have updates on Measure G on our district website, our district Facebook page, and certainly this column. For now, the G stands for Gratitude, as we owe the Orcutt community our heartfelt thanks for its support. In closing, I would like to report on a transition involving our school board. This fall, Jan Zilli chose not to run for re-election after six terms and 24 years of service to our district. Lisa Morinini, a local teacher and longtime district
