WILL’S JOURNEY Joined as school leaver What attracted you to Overbury? I did work experience here at 16 and knew I wanted to go into construction. I had originally planned to go straight to university, but learning that I could do my degree whilst employed at Overbury was the perfect solution for me. What’s the reality now you’re here? The level of individual attention paid to me is fantastic. I was a bit concerned that in a company this big I would get ‘lost’ but people are really supportive and go out of their way to help me. Describe a typical day… I start at about 8am and am currently managing site security so I check in on the night shift then walk the site to make sure everything is on track. On site I am managing the build of the comms rooms as well as, running our Considerate Constructors Scheme, taking responsibility for the monthly neighbourly newsletter and tracking and reporting labour levels. How are you being developed? Lots of my learning is practical, for example, being given the opportunity to manage different aspects of our projects. I am also broadening my knowledge of the build process by working closely with our technical services manager to learn about the mechanical and electrical elements of the fit out. This sits alongside the day a week I spend at university. What are the key things people need to succeed here? You need to be organised and be comfortable speaking to a broad range of people. What are the people like to work with? Everybody is very dedicated and works to the same goals. People are also extremely friendly so I’ve never been afraid to ask for help.

SHAILAN’S JOURNEY With us on placement from university What attracted you to Overbury? I am studying the commercial side of construction at Nottingham Trent University and wanted the opportunity to put some of the theory into practice on my placement year. What’s the reality now you are here? I thought I would spend all day in the office with my head stuck in spreadsheets but that really isn’t the case. Describe a typical day No two days are the same. I can be on site working with a client, working on plan details with our project team, for example, forecasting valuations for labour costs over the next month, in the office helping price jobs, or pulling tender responses together. How are you being developed? This is a great learning environment. There is structure to my learning and I will have the opportunity to spend time in different parts of the business. I also have learning objectives to help keep me on track. The best part is being given the freedom to test myself whilst always knowing there are people on hand to support me. What are the key things people need to succeed here? Good self-management and a positive and curious attitude. What are the people like to work with? Very friendly and super professional. It is a great team. I am given a lot of freedom but can go to anyone for help.
SHAILAN PARMAR Placement student 21 years old Based in Birmingham Employed by Overbury

ELAINE’S JOURNEY Joined as a graduate What attracted you to Morgan Lovell? On graduation I applied to a variety of psychology-based roles. I found Morgan Lovell by chance but loved the feel of the company through the interview process. What’s the reality now you are here? Within a month I was right in the deep end! I have had real responsibility from the beginning, a lot of my friends are effectively doing administrative roles but here I have been able to get involved in real projects that have a tangible impact on our clients. Describe a typical day A typical day starts at about 8.30am and involves team and client meetings, workshops, putting together presentations and analysing, interpreting and presenting data back to our clients so they can understand the best office design for them. How are you being developed? The environment is quite relaxed and the work is extremely interesting. I was recently involved in a ‘visioning’ project in Bristol with a FTSE 250 company who were looking at building an innovation centre. They didn’t know what they wanted so we helped them develop the concept design. What are the key things people need to succeed here? Creativity, enthusiasm and the ability to work with others. What are the people like to work with? I am given a lot of autonomy but there is also plenty of support when required. Elaine’s career path: • Undergraduate degree in psychology – Sussex University • Masters occupational psychology – City University • Workplace consultant – Morgan Lovell
