» WASTE MANAGEMENT

ACCRA COMPOST AND RECYCLING Plant Limited Waste management, a major component of environmental sanitation, has over the years in Ghana been a major headache of successive central governments and local authorities. While the growth of towns and cities has resulted from increased population coupled with increased socioeconomic activities, there has not been a commensurate increase in essential infrastructure and logistics for effective and efficient waste management services to be delivered. lt is in this light that the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant Limited has been set up to facelift the provision of waste management services in the country. The Plant is indeed set up to provide integrated processing and management of liquid and solid waste including domestic waste, hospital waste, industrial waste and e-waste. Currently there is a major problem with identification and acquisition of landfills for dumping of waste and it is expected that the Plant will eventually eliminate the need for landfill dump sites.

ACARP is an integrated waste processing and recycling company established to collect, sort, process and recycle solid and liquid waste and produce organic manure for agronomic purposes in Ghana and West Africa. The Plant will also address the problem of plastic waste through sorting, collection, processing and recycling of such waste. Apart from sharing its knowledge, technical and scientific experience in the field of waste management, the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant, will also be the focal point for training and research in the provision of effective waste processing and recycling.

VISION To be the leading waste processing and recycling organization in Africa.

MISSION To provide an effective integrated processing, management and recycling of solid and liquid waste, for economic and social good and in an environmentally sustainable manner, thereby producing compost and other products for the Ghanaian and African economies.

OBJECTIVES

SANITATION PROBLEMS

OUR SOLUTION

©© To undertake processing, management and recycling of solid and liquid waste in volumes and at efficiencies which are unprecedented in any organization in Africa.

Waste management in Accra is limited to collection, dumping and nothing further. All existing landfill sites in the region have exceeded their maximum capacity resulting in severe environmental crisis from improper disposal of waste.

Unsanitary condition is a serious threat to investment and the economic growth of the country. It therefore demands a collaborative effort of all, such as ACARP providing the needed platform to achieving these goals.

©© To be the supplier of choice of compost and recyclable products, in Africa. ©© To maintain an excellent level of Safety and environmental sustainability in its operations. ©© To attract and retain skilled staff who are motivated. ©© To ensure effective training and development of staff so as to enhance overall work outcomes. ©© To operate in a cost effective manner and along, sound financed line ensuring that financial are strong. ©© To ensure optimum use of ICT and promote innovation and enhanced and operational and business outcomes.

©© Anaerobic decomposition coupled with uncontrolled burning at the landfill sites emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which in turn results in heat waves, intense wind patterns, and heavy rains associated with floods. ©© The direct correlation between bad sanitation and disease is a fact that cannot be overlooked. It is therefore not surprising that sanitation related diseases are the most common mortal ailments in the country. ©© Discharging of liquid waste into the sea and other water bodies is an extremely crude and environmentally unsafe practice which is surprisingly becoming an acceptable disposal alternative. ©© Tourism, which thrives well in a clean, healthy and attractive environment, is being sabotaged by sanitation problems thus stultifying the promotional efforts of the tourism industry.

©© Integrated solid waste management system is the solution for Accra. ACARP is seriously employing the 3R’S i.e. to recover, recycle and reuse. Municipal solid waste conveyed from different sources would be sorted out, valuables recovered, recyclables fed to recycling companies and organic content composted into compost. Only a small fraction of waste would be land-filled i.e. increasing the lifespan of landfill facilities. ©© The ultra modern waste treatment facility (a Chinese-German technology) is expected to treat 45-50% of the daily waste collected from the Accra metropolis and transported to landfill sites. ©© The faecal waste treatment plant is also to treat liquid waste from the metropolis in the long term. ©© ACARP will strongly join forces with all stakeholders to build enough capacity to enforce regulatory framework in integrated waste processing and recycling www.acarpghana.com

SEWERAGE SYSTEMS Ghana Limited Sewerage Systems (Ghana) Limited (SSGL) is a private limited liability company incorporated on 14th December, 2005 with certificate number CA 22256 and given certificate to commence business on 13th December , 2005 under the Ghana Companies Code 1963 (Act 179) with the core mandate to provide engineering, construction and procurement services in the sewerage management industry in Ghana. The company set up has been carefully thought out and has from the onset recruited experienced, diligent and dedicated team of managerial, technical and financial resource managers together with an equally experienced, dedicated motivated and trained operational and maintenance work force.

OBJECTIVES 1. The acquisition and rehabilitation of the Accra Sewerage and Faecal Treatment Plants is part of the overall strategic plan of SSGL to vertically integrate waste management into a value chain system with the aim to clean the environment to benefit Ghanaians and also to raise the profitability level of the company.  Our objectives for getting involved in the Sewerage and Faecal Treatment Plants project include: 2. Improve the gross margin of the company with the additional income from receipt of human sludge and separating the water from the sludge and converting it into treated water, biogas and compost;

3. Rehabilitating all the pump stations within the Mudor Faecal Treatment complex, Lavender Hill and Korle-Bu Sewerage and Hospital Waste Treatment Networks and converting them into a network of modern pump houses and Sewerage treatment plants within the first year of acquisition;  4. Market the pump stations and Sewerage treatment plants and the recycled bye products of Composts, treated water and biogas (methanol and commercial CO2) through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, Accra Metropolitan Assembly and

80

JOSPONG G ROU P OF COMPANIES

Ministry of Food and Agriculture.  The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change or UNFCCC will be contacted to access the carbon credit facility.  5. Generate income of approximately US$120 million within the first five years from the service of collecting human waste sludge and treating it that would otherwise have been disposed of in a landfill, sale of treated water for domestic use including gardening and city vegetable farms; and organic compost fertiliser and biogas. 6. Rehabilitating and expanding the Faecal and Sewerage Treatment Systems within the central Accra including Korle- Bu Hospital and Keneshie to the west of Accra and Osu and Labadi to the East of Accra.

MISSION The mission of Sewerage Systems (Ghana) Limited is to provide the good people of Ghana starting with the Accra Metropolis with a decent and cost effective means of disposal of effluent and human sludge and to ensure the financial sustainability of the business.

Keys to Success The key to success in our business are: Secure funding to undertake the immediate rehabilitation of all the old Accra pump stations, including the Korle-Bu pump station and the two Faecal and Sewerage Treatment Plants at Mudor and Lavender Hill. Purchase modern and technologically efficient equipment to construct a new Medical Waste Disposal plant at Korle-Bu for use by the Teaching Hospital and all the major Hospitals in Accra including the 37 Military Hospital, Police Hospital, Ridge Hospital and the Polyclinics in Accra. SSGL will also rehabilitate the Korle-Bu Sewerage Network to feed into the main Accra Sewerage and Faecal Treatment Plant under construction by the SSGL. Purchase modern and technologically efficient equipment for all the existing pump stations that link up to the Mudor and Lavender Hill Plants and to expand the system to cover the outlying areas of Keneshie, Adabraka, Ridge, Osu and Labadi. Procure equipment to collect for sale the generated methane gas (CH4), Carbon Dioxide

(CO2) and Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) that come as by-product from the Faecal treatment plant to augment the company’s income. Procure equipment to complete the circle at the pump station by converting the effluent in the final Settling Tanks into compost for use organic fertilizer by the Accra Compost Plant. Collect and distribute the treated water for domestic and city agricultural irrigation.

Company Locations and Facilities LAVENDER HILL Accra Sewerage Treatment Plant (popularly referred to as the Lavender Hill) was built in 2000, by the British company Taylor Woodrow. The design treatment capacity was 16000t/d and hourly treatment capacity is 666.67t. Due to neglect the Sewerage treatment plant is virtually paralyzed. The equipment and pipelines are not in use because of corrosion and bad maintenance. This proposal intends to reconstruct and make the Sewerage treatment facilities operational properly, and to allow the effluent to be properly treated for discharge to the Atlantic Ocean.

THE MUDOR TREATMENT PLANT

KORLE-BU SEWERAGE NETWORK

COMPANY SUMMARY

This consists of the Head Faecal and Sewerage Treatment Plant at Mudor and a network of six pump stations (Korle-Bu, State House, Ministries Beach, Flagstaff House, High Street and Osu-Labone).

The Korle Bu Sewerage System was constructed in the late 1950’s with the opening of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The sewerage network is in two main sections, viz. the Western from the Medical School Laboratory to the Zoti Villa and the Eastern from Housemen Flat to the main Guggisberg Avenue Road.

Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL) will soon become a household name in Ghana as a result of its active involvement in the efficient waste management in the Accra Metropolitan area. The company will achieve these largely as a result of the human development activities which have created a pool of experienced managerial, technical and financial team, together with an equally experienced, dedicated motivated and skilled operational work force.

The existing Sewerage treatment plant at Mudor and the associated pump stations are presently in deplorable state. Many of the facilities have been in operation for over 40 years without refurbishment and have obviously outlived their design service life. The Sewerage treatment plant is in dilapidated state and has been out of commission for a considerable period and thus creating a serious surcharging on some sections of the networks. New and more durable pumps are required to replace the existing pumps which are in an advanced corrosion state.

Sewerage from each of the two subcatchment areas is treated in a compact treatment plant comprising a sedimentation tank and humus tank. Effluent from these tanks is discharged directly into the Korle Lagoon. Many of these sewerage networks serve the relatively more recent developments of the hospital.

SSGL is well equipped with modern waste collection vehicles, sweepers and heavy earthmoving machines for operation and maintenance of landfill sites and construction of access roads. www.seweragesystemsgh.com
