Shadow Lakes II Association

Fossil Footprints Newsletter from the Chairman of the Board . . . . Mike Tomasek

APRIL 2015

Dear Members,

I'm pleased to report that the Tully Monster/Fossil Cove bridge project remains on schedule. The engineer has informed us that the beams will be ready in May, so hopefully we'll see the new bridge completed this summer as planned. Director Wayne Kancler has taken the lead on making sure this important addition to the Association stays on track. Much appreciated, Wayne.

We have been concerned about the City of Braidwood charging us for sewer and water related repairs. In the Board's opinion, the City taxes we pay should cover these costs. Mayor Vehrs has indicated that he would be willing to meet with us regarding this concern. We will have that meeting as soon as possible.

As we leave another long winter behind, it is important to acknowledge the dedicated employees who help make Shadow Lakes great. Jen Ledford and Cassie Trinka are our regular Activities Department employees. We will hire additional Activities employees to help out this summer. Ranae Damaschke, who is our office supervisor, Marie Green and Peg McQuarters handle office administration duties. Mike Colavecchi, Joe Kubalanza and John Kloth are our regular Maintenance Department Employees. We will hire additional employees to help with the additional seasonal maintenance work required. Al Skoczylas, Dave Sterling, and Tom Kuter are our Security Officers. We are in the process of hiring one more officer to ensure the Security Department is adequately staffed. The quality of our workforce is impressive. Many thanks to our employees for the outstanding work they do on the Association's behalf and to the Department Heads and everyone else involved in recruiting and retaining our people. We have been considering whether the Association should charge a user fee to those who rent the Community Center for private parties. Such a fee would help offset the cost of cleaning and other Association services that are needed in connection with private usage. After much deliberation on this issue, and after considering market data, input from the POAC and our membership as a whole, the Board currently supports charging a $100 user fee ($125 for holidays) to rent the Center for up to five hours. There would also be a $100 refundable security deposit required. Usage would be exclusive to the renter. The Association will continue to take reservation requests on a first come, first serve basis for events occurring

during the year. The Community Center is an Association treasure. We will continue to monitor usage closely to ensure that we are using this building in the best way possible. Best wishes for a fabulous spring. I hope to see you at the next Board meeting Mike

SECURITY

The warmer weather will soon bring out a greater abundance of people and kids to Shadow Lakes.

Please drive carefully and obey all posted speed limits and stop signs. Remember these rules apply to both autos and golf carts. And speaking of golf carts here are a few more safety reminders: • • •

• • •

Only licensed drivers are allowed to operate a golf cart. One passenger per seat and all passengers MUST be seated at all times Holding an infant or small child on your lap while driving is an invitation a simple accident causing serious harm to the child If driving after dusk, the golf cart MUST be equipped with operable head and tail lights At all times be aware of pedestrians, children playing, bicycles motor vehicles and other golf carts Reckless driving on our roads and especially on the nature trail is not only foolish but also dangerous

One final note about golf carts, be sure the office has current insurance information and don’t forget to have your village and lot numbers clearly visible be sure to purchase your new stickers no later than June 30th.

Other numbers that should be displayed and clearly visible from the road are you lot address numbers. We are also asking that members with water front property display their lot address on the water side. The clear display of these numbers will assist our own security members as well as all other first responders when notified of an emergency. One of the many reasons our members bought property in Shadow Lakes is the added security of being in a gated community. That security is minimized when a gate is broken. Lifting a gate bar can and will damage the normal operation of the gate. In addition to having an inoperable gate, the cost of repairs affects us all.

Finally, with spring and summer severe weather possibilities don’t forget that we have an underground storm shelter located behind the Amenity Center that is accessible thru the Pavilion. At the first forecast of severe weather the shelter will be immediately opened by a security or maintenance staff member.

The safety and security of our members, our families and our guests is one of our most important duties. As such, all questions, comments and suggestions are always welcome. Please feel free to contact me at any time. ENJOY A SAFE SPRING AND SUMMER!!!! Frank Landolina

MAINTENANCE The last two months have kept our maintenance staff busy. In addition to the usual work we have begun the spring water turn-ons for our Tier 2 members. We have been working on a number of issues related to getting the pool ready for the coming summer season including improvements to the pump and filtration system, minor patching, a new hand rail for the stairs and preparing for a new coat of paint.

A new small conference room has been completed at the Community Center and additional work and storage areas were installed in the office. Electrical and gas lines located in the Amenity Center crawl space were repaired as was floor damage under the pump room due to water damage that occurred over the years. We began filling pot holes created during the winter and will continue the rest of the month. We are continuing to replace B box connections as needed. As everyone begins cleaning and pruning on their property we want to remind you to conform to the practice of cutting branches to no more than four foot lengths and bundling the branches with cord or twine. If possible, pleas drop off your bundles and yard waste bags at the fenced burn area near the maintenance garage.

As Mike noted in his message, work on the FC/TMV bridge project will be going on over the next two months with a target completion date of June 15th. Weather permitting, we are hoping for the major portion of this project to be completed by the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Summer maintenance will begin soon. Grass cutting along with putting our weed boat back in the water will be going on. Thanks to the generosity of one of our members, the maintenance department now has its own pontoon boat. Along with our small weed cutter we will be using the pontoon boat to get to those areas that are not accessible with the large weed boat.

Work will soon begin on the first long awaited handicap accessible fishing pier. The pier will be located at the Amenity Center. We will also be re-surfacing areas of the more severely winter damaged roads as well as working on patching various damaged sections. As you see our staff working to keep Shadow Lakes beautiful, why not take the opportunity to say thanks for all of their hard work. Hank Genteman

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS. The circled area in the picture shows remnants of woven materials that have been flushed in toilets that resulted in a clogged pump in one of our sewer lift stations. The cost just to remove and clean this pump was $1,035.00. If it were necessary to pump out the lift station prior to removing and cleaning this pump an additional $500.00 to $1,000.00 in cost would have been incurred. Had the clog caused the pump to burn out, replacement costs could range from $5,000.00 to $10,000.00 depending on the size of the pump. We have already spent $7,685.00 this year on sewer repairs compared to $1,875.71 during the same period last year. THE ONLY THING YOU SHOULD EVER FLUSH DOWN A TOILET IS HUMAN WASTE (URINE AND FECES) AND 100% BIO-DEGRADABLE TOILET PAPER. We are once again posting the list of items NOT TO FLUSH DOWN A TOILET.

ACTIVITIES The Activity Department is getting ready for another exciting fun-filled summer. Dates and times for events will be posted on the website and on the boxes at the dumpsters. To help offset the cost of supplies for crafts, we will be charging a dollar per craft this year. If anyone has any baby food jars or small bouillon cube jars, we would greatly appreciate them. You can drop the clean jars off at the office. Also, we are looking for volunteers to help with the Flea Market and Family Fest. Please leave your name and phone number with the office, and we will contact you. In addition, please be aware the hours for the Flea Market have been changed. The new hours are from 8am-1pm. Please do not throw away your aluminum cans. We recycle them. The money collected from the aluminum helps pay for Bingo. New this year, we bought a portable satellite dish called a Tailgater. It can be used for a variety of things including sporting events, concerts, children’s programming, movies and pay-per-view events. We will be having a 50/50 raffle during Activities to help offset the cost of the monthly fee. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for Activities, please email them to me [email protected]. Hope to see you at the next Activity. Have a great summer. Jennifer Ledford

SHADOW LAKES SPORTSMAN FISHING CLUB SPRING HIGHLIGHTS 2014-15 ice fishing was great. Lots of big fish and 60 folks at our Ice Derby. Fishing after ice-out has been super! Crappie up to 12 inches; LMBass up to 19 inches and four pounds. Trout and some reports of SMBass. Pan-fish and Trout were caught mainly on live bait. Bass were taking jigs with crayfish trailers. Walleye and forage were stocked on April 2nd. Also, a small order of “shiners” was added to the Northern Lakes to test their survival rate. Thank you Paul Gardner Jr. for this donation.

Eight buckets of forage (minnows) were trucked into the Lakes along the golf cart trail. Many of our folks and families enjoy fishing these waters. Later this year, we will be adding other species in those lakes. Plans are for larger Bluegills and possibly other game-fish. Thanks to our many volunteers for their help. All new signage was installed this past month for our banners, activity signs and “Fish of the Month” entry forms in our Club boxes around the Lakes. We added signage in the area around the new boat ramp in Explorer Village.

New fishing licenses and trout stamps (to keep Trout) were required April 1st.

Our new ads and signage features a picture of Quinn Hansen, a five year old with his 5 pound LMBass caught off his dock last summer. A great catch for a young angler. Quinn always makes sure he has his life jacket on as he fishes.

Our March “Fish of the Month” was a 19 inch, very healthy, 4+ pound LMBass. See a picture of this fish above. Congrats to Fred Cowell, Club Vice President.

Our 2015 activities are listed on posters and on our Club activity sheet in the Club boxes around the Lakes and on bulletin boards in the Amenity Center. Our “Fish of the Month” contest is open to ALL residents and family members.

Club meetings are on the 3rd Sunday of each month in the Amenity Center at 9 AM. Free coffee and donuts, etc. All are welcome to stop by and see what the Club is all about before joining. Applications are available in the Office or in our Club boxes around the Lakes. Please help us support our lakes & fishery. Tom Lydon
