he summer season is behind us although it felt like an extended spring season. The media were very supportive of our haemodialysis patients’ suffering over-crowding in Limerick. The pressure point for services was highlighted many times and, eventually, the HSE came up with a decision. They agreed to send Limerick patients to the new Galway Wellstone haemodialysis centre. This is far from ideal but it beats the other option which was to send patients further afield to Dublin. This arrangement will probably last a year. The decision to locate a commercial satellite haemodialysis unit less than 2 miles from the hospital facility in Limerick is a strange one. The hospital unit has 11 stations and AUTUMN 2007

is expected to be the “mother” unit for this new 15 station (bigger) unit down the road. Somewhere in the system there is a plan to expand the mother unit to 25 stations. Beaumont Hospital can tell you how long those types of plans can remain a dream. The second part of the decision – location – also confuses me. Why put facilities beside each other? There are three obvious town locations which would reduce the drive times for patients, Ennis, Roscrea or Tipperary town. Tipperary town would not get consideration because it is in another HSE area and although Limerick is nearer, those patients normally get sent to Cork. So drive times for patients do not seem to matter to the HSE anymore although the cost of transport of patients does. The parked “Renal Review” wishes to reduce drive times by locating facilities locally. It seems that city folk are the only people going to gain here. The parked “Renal Review” has many recommendations that the HSE are ignoring as is evident by this latest decision. The mother hospital, (the centre of excellence) should be made bigger and more capable, to cope with a workload of a satellite – not in this case. The IKA

argument that better roads lead to shorter drive times is true – but not in city traffic. I have mentioned the parked “Renal Review”. The HSE, in its wisdom, has decided after 9 months to send the Review to an expert advisory committee. My opinion is that this is the beginning of the end of the hard work which so many contributed to. On a brighter note the “Living Kidney Transplant” programme seems to be back on track and the suspended programme has recommenced with a ‘living transplant’ occuring last week in Beaumont. The media were also very interested in the discussion on presumed consent for organ donors which was generated by comments from the Chief Medical Officer in the UK. This subject, amongst many others, will be part of the conference we are hosting for the Council of Europe in Dun Laoghaire. The draft programme is inside this SUPPORT and all are welcome – if they register prior to attending. At 5pm, on Saturday the 13th of October, after the Conference there will be “A Walk for Life” down Dun Laoghaire Pier. This is not a fundraiser, merely a public presentation of transplantation

and the need for donors. If you cannot make the Conference we would love if you could attend this small 3k walk (weather permitting). We are aware that it is only a week after the Service of Remembrance on the 6th of October which is always the most important day in our calendar and the highlight of our year. The media also responded very well to our Transplant Team efforts at the World Transplant Games in Bangkok (supplement enclosed). There are too many people to thank here but I must mention two, Liam Horan, the Sports Reporter who travelled to the games and Gwen O’Donoghue who managed the home side of the media. The subsequent invitation received from President Mary McAleese to

Liam Horan and Gwen O’Donoghue

meet her in the Áras was a cherished moment for all involved. Next year the European Dialysis and Transplant Games will be held in Germany and I would encourage all of you to consider this, less adventurous

challenge as an opportunity to get fit. The IKA have succeeded in its bid for the 2010 European Dialysis and Transplant Games so we need to build a strong team of athletes and supporters for that forthcoming event in Dublin. I am delighted to announce that Alison Larkin has been appointed as the new National Development Officer and she is starting with us in October. We wish her well in her new career. All are most welcome to our Service the 6th and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible.

he Annual Service of Remembrance & Thanksgiving will take place in Corpus Christi Church, Home Farm Road, Dublin 9, on Saturday 6th October 2007, at 1.00pm., and will be recorded by Kairos for transmission on RTE 1 television, Sunday 4th November. The Book of Remembrance will be available for the benefit of all donor families. The occasion is a very important event in the IKA calendar. It is a unique opportunity for donor families and organ recipients to remember and honour the special people who have donated their organs so that others may live. The

Service is open to all organ recipients and all their families and all are welcome. Lunch will be served immediately following the Service. Directions: Coming from the City Centre on the Drumcondra Road, take the first left turn after the Skylon Hotel and, if coming from the Airport direction, turn right immediately before the Skylon Hotel. n the 12 months from June 06 – June 07 93 more patients are being treated with dialysis in the country. This represents an increase of 6.5% in the 12 months which does indicate a slowdown in the increase in patients being referred to dialysis centres. This can be seen as a good or bad situation. It should give the HSE some time to provide the extra capacity

needed to bring down the patient per station ratios to eradicate the necessity for night-time dialysis shifts. Not seen in the survey are the extra facilities now in Cork, Galway and Tullamore. The problem facing new facilities and expanding capacity in existing ones is the availability of trained staff. Staffing new and extended facilities is rapidly becoming the biggest problem to solve. This does not happen overnight and

with employment bans looming it would seem impossible to plan, recruit and train the much needed extra staff, let alone to get the money to do so. The parked “Renal Review” recommends one qualified nurse for every three patients. I believe the new contract for the facility in Limerick is based on a 4 to 1 patient to nurse ratio – what next can we expect from the HSE?

As part of the Irish Kidney Association/Rehabiltative Return to Work Programme, three renal patients joined Head Office in Park West last September. This was the fifth group of participants under this Programme. The new 9 month, two and a half day per week on-site training will begin in late 2007. Past participants have progressed their careers to further employment and study/courses. We are currently accepting applications from renal patients. To apply in the first instance please contact Colin White at 01-6205306 at Donor House for an informal discussion and information on the Programme. You may be on haemodialysis and want to work/train on your days off. You may be on CAPD or have a kidney transplant and looking for “back-to-work” experience. We have CAPD facilities on site. he building of the new Renal/Cardiac Unit at Cork University Hospital, commenced as scheduled on the 4th of July. Good progress has been made as the picture of the site shows us. The

artist impression of the exterior of the building is very impressive and we look forward to the 33 station facility being completed by the end of 2009. In the meantime the new temporary 12 station haemodialysis unit has been occupied and is relieving the pressure on patients and staff which was clearly the most overworked dialysis unit in the country in the last six months, but with the extra temporary capacity almost completed it must have been easier to bear.

IRISH KIDNEY ASSOCIATION RENAL PATIENT CONFERENCE & AGM

Tony Goovaert and Dr. George Mellotte

T

he Renal Patient Conference and 2007 Annual General Meeting of the Irish Kidney Association was held on the 30th June, 2007 in the Red Cow Moran Hotel. The Conference, which was sponsored by Baxter HealthCare, was a huge addition to the day. It started at 10am and had an attendance of over 200 people, many who travelled the night before and stayed in the hotel. Dr. George Mellotte chaired the Conference for us and Dr. Catherine Wall opened the talks with a very informative presentation of ‘The Future for Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation in Ireland. Valerie Twomey from Cork, followed with her personal experience of being a patient, now transplanted. Tony Goovaerts travelled from Belgium to show us his nursing and programme managers experience of running a self-care haemodialysis centre in Brussels. After the coffee break, Dr. Elizabeth Bailey gave a very informative and educational patient friendly explanation on Phosphate Control. Next up we had a Northern Ireland home haemodialysis patient who gave us his personal

experience. He was folloed by Adrian Bourke from Mayo who talked on living life to the full on peritoneal dialysis. We were running late for lunch which meant I had to shorten my piece on the IKA services and the AGM started nearer to 3pm than the scheduled 2.30pm. The mix of patient and health care professionals speaking at the Conference was very successful. The Conference was a wonderful idea of retiring Chairman Vera Frisby and we will now have to better it every year. The AGM preceeded the Conference and had our biggest ever attendance. Miriam Bryan was stepping down from six years as an officer of the Paul Donohoe Association. Paul Donohoe was unapposed as Honorary Chairman, Vera Frisby was unapposed as Honorary Treasurer and Pat May was elected as Honorary Secretary of the Association. The rest of the business of the meeting will be available in the Pat May Minutes of the AGM.

Secretary to the European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Federation, I had to organise the Federation’s Annual General Meeting, and, as part of the meeting, Colin presented the Irish bid for the 2010 Games in Dublin. As I am sure you know by now he was successful in his efforts. On my travels between hotels and venues, via taxi, you quickly realised that

T

hailand is a very different part of the world than we in Europe are used to. For starters it is a lot hotter and at the time of year - August - a lot more humid. The two combined was an extra challenge for all of us and especially the athletes. I had a different agenda to most of the travellers. I was taking part in a lot of meetings about future Games. As

most of the drivers do not read our alphabet. The Thai people have a completely different one. It was essential to have your destination written in Thai. The Tuc-Tuc taxi, a glorified three wheeler moped, was a no-go area for anyone with a bad back as I have. Faster as it may be in Bangkok traffic, with its ability to use small side roads. We mainly stayed in the

Four Star Bangkok Palace Hotel. It was the best of the four hotels used by the organisers which is thanks to Colin for checking it out earlier in the year whilst on his travels to his sisters wedding in Australia. The double standards of the city were very evident. Only 100 metres from the hotel people were living in what we would call squalor. Even nearer there was what I presumed was a disused railway line with families living in shacks along the tracks, until I saw a freight train going through the line one day. On the other hand once you got out of Bangkok you have to admire how lush the country really is. We visited the tourist park which housed the models of the beautiful temples located throughout Thailand and which gave us a flavour of what the country could offer - if we had the time. There is no doubt Thailand’s main source of income is tourism and sex tourism is high on the agenda. A man could not go any distance in Bangkok without being solicited. This is not the place that female tourists could feel very comfortable in. The female is very much a second class citizen - this was equally strange on the golf course where all the caddies were female and all wore a pink uniform. They were excellent in their golf advice and were appreciated by all the contestants. I was successful on my second attempt to get elected to the Council of the World Transplant Games. I had further meetings of the Council throughout the Games. This has given me a huge insight into how the Games operate and I look forward to being involved in improving and strengthening the Games particularly

Jimmy Servis

from a PR concept giving greater emphasis to the ability of the Games to advance the public perceptions of organ donation and the subsequent benefits of transplantation for so many. In conclusion I know everyone enjoyed their Thai experience but I am not sure how many would recommend Bangkok as a holiday destination. Judit Berente

However, Austria and Belgium have overtaken Spain when it comes to overall Organ Transplantation.(D) These two countries have succeeded in transplanting more organs from fewer donors so perhaps we should be looking more closely at these two countries for inspiration. When you compare the amount of kidneys transplanted from the available donors you see a different pattern. At the top you have Switzerland, who managed to transplant 159 out of the possible 160 available kidneys in 2006 – a remarkable feat.(E) Over a 5 year period Ireland is ranked 17th in its use of donors(F) and Spain is at the bottom with under 70% efficiency.(G) Belgium is not much better at 19th place(H) but Austria achieves an impressive 92% efficiency in Kidney

beating donors, typically a cardiac patient who is not for resuscitation and who gives conscious consent for donation. This new category of potential donors is an advance which many countries are looking closely at. The long term outcomes for the recipients are being closely watched and it is now a necessity in both the UK and the Netherlands because of their low brain-stem death donor numbers. So, Ireland after it establishes its Living Transplant Programme can look to these other potential donors, or could we be doing this now?

Organ Transplantation, Ireland now ranks 12th place in Europe.(T) With more Living Transplantation we should jump forward in the coming years and I think we should aspire to the Norwegian model and try to achieve their 4th place in the future. It is a similar size country all we need is some oil – maybe!

To conclude, I must point out the two advancements in the year for Ireland. A record 65 Liver Transplants puts us in 7th place(Q) and our first full year of Lung Transplantation puts us in 13th place(R) in Europe. Reviewing Heart Transplantation we note that we are lagging in 16th place.(S) So, on my new table of overall

Autumn As the cool autumn evenings approach why not try out some of the following tempting recipes to warm the palate and make for an enjoyable evening of good food with family and friends. 1 tablespoon rapeseed or sunflower oil 4 shallots peeled and sliced 100mls balsamic vinegar Grated zest and juice of half lemon Pepper to taste

CHEESY CHEAT’S PIZZA Ingredients (serves 1) 1 medium sized wholemeal bap 1 small (60g) tomato thinly sliced 2 slices (25g) red pepper 1 tablespoon (10g) cottage cheese 1 tablespoon (10g) grated cheddar cheese Freshly ground black pepper to taste 1 pinch dried oregano or mixed herbs (optional)

Method Grill the tuna steak under a moderate heat for 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally. While the tuna is cooking, heat the oil in a frying pan and cook the shallots. Once they are golden brown, add the balsamic vinegar, lemon juice and zest. Bring to the boil to thicken slightly. When the fish is cooked thoroughly, remove from the grill, top with the caramelised onions and serve immediately.

Method Preheat the grill to medium-high. Slice the bap in half. Lightly toast the bread on each side under a grill. Remove from the grill and top each side of the bap with slices of tomato. Sprinkle with the dried herbs if you are using them. Finely chop the red pepper and sprinkle over the tomato. Top each “pizza” with half the cottage cheese and sprinkle evenly with the grated cheese. Return to the grill and grill until the cheddar is melted and golden brown. Serve with a little freshly ground black pepper.

BEEF AND MUSHROOM STROGANOFF Ingredients (serves 4) 500g of stewing beef cut into small strips 1 small tin of sliced mushrooms (drained) 4 heaped teaspoons of wholegrain mustard 1 (200ml) tub crème fraiche 1 small onion thinly sliced 10mls rapeseed or sunflower oil 150mls white wine 220g white rice

Dining By JOANNE CULLEN-VENN, RENAL DIETITIAN, WATERFORD REGIONAL HOSPITAL Add in the beef strips and fry for a further 5 minutes. Next add the wine and the mushrooms, cover the pan and let the mixture simmer for about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, boil the rice in unsalted water. When the beef is evenly cooked, add the mustard and crème fraiche, and warm through before serving with the boiled rice. Note: Tinned mushrooms have been used in this recipe as they are much lower in potassium than fresh ones.

Bake for about 60-70 minutes until light golden brown and firm to touch. Cool the tin for about 5 minutes and then turn on to a wire rack to cool.

APPLE AND CINNAMON OAT CRUMBLE Ingredients (serves 4) 450g cooking apples peeled, cored and thinly sliced 75g brown sugar 100g plain flour 75g rolled oats 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 75g butter or (hard) margarine

FLORIDA FRUIT CAKE Ingredients (makes 10 slices) 225g self raising flour 100g low salt butter or hard margarine (cold from the fridge) 100g sugar 100g candied mixed peel 1 egg (beaten) 2 tablespoons (30mls) fresh orange juice 6 tablespoons (90mls) milk

Method Preheat the oven to 190°C/Gas Mark 5. Place the sliced apple in a small oven proof pie dish and sprinkle with 25g (1oz) of the sugar. Mix the flour, oats, cinnamon and remaining sugar together in a bowl. Cut up the butter or margarine into small pieces. Add to the oats and rub in with your fingers until the mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle the crumb mixture evenly over the fruit. Bake for 40-50 minutes, until the crumble is golden brown and the fruit juices are bubbling up the side of the dish. Serve with whipped cream or crème fraiche. Note: Count one portion of crumble as one fruit portion.

Method Preheat the oven to 180°C (Gas Mark 4 ) Grease the loaf tin and line the base and the longer sides with a single rectangle of baking parchment. Put the flour into a large bowl and rub in the butter until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and mixed peel, then with a metal spoon gradually mix in egg, orange juice and milk. If you hold a spoon of mixture above the bowl the mixture should drop back into the bowl by the time you count slowly to five. If it does not, add 1-2 tablespoons more milk. Pour the mixture into the tin and smooth over the top.

I would like to thank my Dietetic colleagues working in St.Georges Hospital, London and also Class Publishing for giving me their kind permission to use these recipes.

he exploits of ‘Transplant Team Ireland’ at this year’s World Transplant Games in Bangkok touched the hearts of many, not least our President, Mary McAleese. She kindly invited the team to a Reception at Áras an Uachtaráin on Wednesday September 19th to congratulate them personally and to express her gratitude and that of the Nation for what our athletes have done for the cause of organ donation and transplantation. We all travelled to the Reception together by coach. The sense of excitement and anticipation was tangible. On arrival, we got ourselves organised and then the word came that the President was ready to receive us. The first order of business was individual introductions and photos. The President had something special to say to every individual and the warmth of her personality shone through from the start. Everyone who was there had their own reasons for being involved in transplant and dialysis sports. Amongst the athletes, there was the personal motivation, an opportunity to prove to themselves and others that they were in good health. There was also the bigger picture. Participation in the Games offers an opportunity to promote the cause of organ donation and the value of transplantation. It is a chance to show donor families the magic that their decision to donate can achieve and it is also a great morale boost for those families facing the need for transplantation. In her address to the group, the President focused on these last two points and in one short moment she showed us all her profound understanding of the value and importance of organ donation and transplantation. With the rousing reception that the team received at Dublin airport, on our return from the Games, and the subsequent celebrity status achieved by our athletes, we all thought that it just doesn’t get any better than this. We were wrong. We were honoured with a Reception hosted by our Head of State but more importantly, in Mary McAleese, we met a lady who has empathy and understanding for the transplant and dialysis community.

DANIEL’S STORY

I

am writing to you, to tell how wonderful the Association has been and how you have come to my rescue under my circumstances. I was diagnosed in December 2004 to having a kidney disease called IGA Nephropathy. I was on my way to starting my dialysis. I started peritoneal dialysis in April 2005. I was on haemodialysis for a week then went on CAPD for the next 20 months. In that time I got seven bouts of peritonitis and two bouts of MRSA. I had a lot of bad times during this period and I was confined to hospital for weeks and even months. My body couldn’t take any more torture or vancomicin so I had to go on haemodialysis, which wasn’t easy the first few weeks as I was trying very hard to control fluid intake, putting on 5kg of fluid and trying to lose it on the next session. I had a lot of headaches. Getting up at 01:30 am in the morning, getting my taxi (Sonny) at 02:00am and heading to CUH for 04:00am and on to the machine. Dialysis times were mostly 04:00am to 08:30am approximately. Heading home about 09:00am and arriving home again between 11:00 and 12:00 depending on traffic. On the morning of my call on the 26th of January at 04:05am, I was lying on the bed waiting to get connected to the machine up on the second floor. My phone rang once and stopped and again started ringing so I asked the nurse to pass up my phone which was under the bed in my trousers pocket. I answered and all I heard was “Beaumont”, “Called” and “Transplant”. Those words will stick in my mind forever. The lady said a lot more but it did not register with me. I was so excited. Fred and Paul were in the beds beside me. Down the stairs I went with a smile from ear to ear. It was all happening so fast. I said goodbye to the nurses and patients on dialysis and into my taxi with Sonny and headed for Beaumont. I did a lot of texting on my way to Dublin. I arrived at Beaumont in the middle of rush hour, so we got a Garda escort from the Red Cow Inn into Beaumont. I got tests, bloods and cross matching. Went into theatre about six o’clock in the evening. It was a four hour operation. When I came around after the operation it was about 12:30pm

DANIEL’S STORY... Saturday morning. I woke up to my beautiful wife and wonderful mother who were so strong and brilliant to me during my illness. Damien’s ward is such a happy and joyful ward where everyone is on a high because everyone is on the road to recovery after their transplant. The nurses and doctors and staff were so brilliant to each and every patient. And I found myself a new brother in the name of Sean Moran who got the other kidney from the donor, who I keep in touch with regularly. My wife stayed up in Dublin for a week and stayed in the Renal Support Centre, which was also brilliant. Excellent facilities and my wife felt so much at home. Margaret O’Connor treated her so well (Margaret was in charge of the house). So I would like some of the money raised from the head shave (see below) to go toward this facility because it makes everyone feel so welcome. People who travel from all parts of the country need it after such a long journey, such as my wife and mother who have a five hour trip one way. It shows how committed they were me. I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to a few people. My wife who showed 110 % support to me in good times and some very bad times. She is the very, very best and I’m so grateful to have her. My parents

and sister who were brilliant. They were always there for me. My relatives and friends who were always asking how I was getting on and pushing me a bit more. The staff, nurses and doctors of CUH. Who were excellent to me and never turned their back on me even when I was very sick, in pain and very cranky. The staff, nurses and doctors at Beaumont who were so witty and professional, who were excellent at their jobs and showed supreme professionalism in their job. My taxi driver Sonny Maybury and before Sonny came along my wonderful mother and super wife. I again would like to thank the Renal Support Centre at Beaumont who took wonderful care of my wife Maureen and my mother Helen. And would like to see some of the €13,187 go to that Centre. Also to the donor’s family who made two families very happy - (NEW LIFE). And last of all I would like to thank all the people who supported us (me and Maureen) in our little “HEAD SHAVE” fundraiser. People dug deep and gave plenty of money and the facilities O’Sheas Bar, The Square, Castletownbere, where we did the head shave, and Kathleen O’Neill of K’s Kutz who gave us the free hair cuts. he Laois branch of the Association has been very active during the summer months mostly involving itself with fundraising and awareness work. The branch held its first summer social event in September in the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise and it was decided to invite our collectors and members to the event as a means of creating a more cohesive group of the Association in the county. A great night was had by all during which special tribute was paid to founding members Jean and Bernie Conroy who recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Many of our collectors expressed a wish to join the Association as a means of keeping more in touch with the work of IKA through the SUPPORT magazine. Also in September, friends of the late Mary Nolan got together to remember her and to celebrate her life on the occasion of her birthday. Between them they donated a cheque for €1100 to the local branch for which we are extremely grateful. 24

Sunday morning on June 10th saw the residents of the tranquil village of Borris-in-Ossory wake up to the sound of almost eighty motorcyclists assembling to take part in the inaugural Argonauts Motor Cycle Club fun run in aid of the IKA. This was inspired by club member Derek Dooley, himself an organ transplant recipient. The 120 mile run passed through several towns in the county. As well as raising public awareness of the IKA, the event raised €1700 which IKA

was presented to the Association in Coogan’s Bar in Coolraine on August 10th. Sincere thanks are due to The Argonauts MCC as well as to the Nil Anam MCC who marshalled the event and to the Irish Red Cross who provided support on the day. A poker classic was organised by our member Barry Thomas in the Portlaoise GAA Club on September 15th. The event was well attended and raised in excess of €1000 for the Association.

ust before our break for the summer, almost 30 members turned out for the branch annual dinner party, held once again in Brady’s of Shankill. Those present enjoyed the food and the chat in the comfortable surroundings of the private meeting room where we have our monthly branch meetings, courtesy of the Brady family. The occasion provided plenty of opportunities to catch up on branch and family news, whilst enjoying a selection of fine food. The brief speeches toward the end complimented all involved in arranging the evening. A good night all round. Earlier in the spring, the St Patrick’s Dramatic Society afforded us the opportunity to invite friends and raise some funds by providing a benefit performance of their opening night production of the Victorian drama “The Woman in White”. Their presentation was a superb production of this period piece based on the novel by Wilkie Collins. The photographs convey the style and ambience of the settings and costumes. Branch members are once again indebted to the Dramatic Society for their generous gesture and in providing a very enjoyable, thrilling night of theatre. Members old and new are very welcome to join us as our Branch meetings resume in Brady’s, Shankill, on the first Tuesday of each month at 8 p.m. IKA

ello to all and I hope you all had a good summer despite the weather. Well the Donegal branch committee was kept very busy during the summer attending outings and days out that were held as fundraisers for the Support Centre and the IKA. Unfortunately our horse racing day in July, scheduled to be held in Ballyare Ramelton, in memory of Kathleen Friel was cancelled due to such bad weather. The Donegal Vintage Car Club presented us with a cheque for €4000 to go towards the Support Centre in Beaumont, proceeds from car displays and raffle.

Our very special Mini car club members held a fantastic fun day for all Mini car mad folk in Donegal. This was arranged through the McClintock family, St. Johnston, in memory of their lovely mum Eileen, and proceeds at the gate amounted to €1600. The Moville Agricultral Show committee invited us to a presentation of a cheque for €4000, this was raised along with another €4000 they also gave to the Care of the Aged committee. The money was raised at the show from the gate, shows, and a successful tea/homebaking and coffee stall which Maisie and Patsy Doherty played a very active roll in.

Next to roll in was a very special competion - a penalty kick competition that was to run for three hours non-stop, organised by the grandchildren of Roseanne and Charlie McGonigle from Clonmany. The bookies closed when the grand total of €300 was raised also for the Support Centre. The Harkin family, (John is a recent kidney recipient), friends and relations recently held a bric a brac stall at their local community centre and sold tickets for lovely hampers that were donated to them. They raised the grand sum of €1650 of which they want €1000 to go to the Support Centre in appreciation for all that was available for them when they so needed it. Can I take this opportunity to thank all who raise funds for the branch. Thank you one and all. We held our patients, fundraisers, and supporters outing to Portrush in August. Two coach loads of us headed off in the pouring rain to the seaside resort on the Giants Causeway - well what can I say, we all had a fantastic day out and our meal was beautiful, everybody was so well behaved, nobody complained, our coach drivers were so helpful and patient, and I would like to let you know that I was overwhelmed with all the phone calls and thank you cards I

Again a thank you must be expressed to Lexie and Mabel Tinney who let us avail of these offices for our meetings. A charity night is coming up on the 20th October in the Rock Lounge, Muff. This is being organised by David McCauley and his mum, all monies raised are going to Donegal branch, IKA. The branch would like to congratulate Hugo Boyce on doing us proud at the Transplant Games. Hugo brought home gold and was well greeted when he arrived back in his native Clonmany. Friends, families, committees and community groups that Hugo is involved with were out to welcome him and his lovely wife Lucy, who accompanied Hugo to the Games. e are very concerned at the lack of response by the HSE to the upgrading of the haemodialysis unit at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick, where, at the moment, no new patients can receive haemodialysis due to lack of capacity in the unit. This unit must be upgraded from the present eleven stations to the planned twenty-five stations. We want this unit to become a centre of excellence for our dialysis patients. We were very disappointed that the HSE did not take up the IKA offer of the temporary dialysis unit for use in Limerick. We call on the HSE to reconsider and go ahead and carry out the original plan for the dialysis unit. We send our best wishes to Matt McCormack who received a kidney transplant recently. Congratulations to dialysis patient Lourda Whelan and Adrain Collopy who were married recently in Labasheeda. We wish them a long and healthy life together. We also congratulate our Clare athletes and kidney transplant recipients Marie O’Connor from Lahinch and Jenny Tuohy from Scariff, who represented Ireland at the World Transplant Games in Thailand. Between them they brought home a total of seven medals. We admire them for their courage and the commitment they gave to training for the games. We thank all the

HOLIDAYS By DEBORAH LYNCH, HOLIDAY CO-ORDINATOR

General Hospital which is only a short walk from the Holiday House. Many thanks to the members of the Kerry branch and, in particular Teresa Looney, Michael Quinn & Lorraine Moynihan for making sure that all those who visited Tralee had a comfortable and pleasant stay. Thanks also to the staff of Kerry General for making dialysis available and enabling our patients to holiday in Kerry.

TRAMORE 2007 Hi all! Tramore holidays once again are a great success. The season began in May, when Vera Frisby and Kathy Keoghan opened the apartments. All season our four apartments were fully booked with CAPD patients and Transplant patients. This year Waterford Regional Hospital kindly provided three dialysis sessions per week, throughout the summer months, so one haemodialysis patient per week and their family enjoyed a stay in our apartments in Tramore. I would like to thank all concerned in the running of the Tramore holidays, and for ensuring the patients, their families and friends had a comfortable and pleasant stay. Thanks also to the staff of Waterford Regional for making dialysis available. There are still a number of families due to go to Tramore before the season ends in October.

HOLIDAY DIALYSIS ABROAD IMore and more patients are travelling abroad each year. If you are considering going abroad may I recommend that your first port of call, before you book your holiday, is to contact your Dialysis Unit Sister or myself in Donor House, to ensure that haemodialysis treatments are secured in advance of booking your trip. Not all countries accept the European Health Insurance Card for payment of your dialysis sessions. Often private facilities are the only ones available and they only accept payment from you. Do remember that the Channel Islands, and many European countries, do not accept the card. You must pay for dialysis in the Canaries also, especially Lanzarote. Any patients, who would like advice or assistance in organising holiday dialysis abroad, can contact me at Donor House on 01 6205366 / Lo-Call: (1890 543 639) or at [email protected]

KERRY HOLIDAYS 2007 The Tralee Holiday house opened for holiday haemodialysis patients in March. The demand for holidays in Tralee was very high and many families enjoyed a well deserved weeks break. Donor House has received much positive feedback from families who received a holiday in Tralee. Haemodialysis treatment was provided by Kerry

KILCORMAC GROUP MAKE TWO SHORT COMEDY FILMS FOR THE IRISH KIDNEY ASSOCIATION produced many stage shows for charity for the Irish Kidney Association and many other local charities. Most of the actors have never stood in front of a movie camera before so this has been a great opportunity for them to learn the different techniques of film making. One of the cameramen involved has had previous experience filming with high budget films and thoroughly enjoyed his experience with the crew on Tales of Scarry. Gerard McCormac best known for his role as the role in Pure Mule plays the part of a bouncer he is also involved in the editing of the film. Padraig Seery and Will Kelly from Tullamore worked as camera men. Tales from Scarry is a hilarious comedy and will prove to be a rib tickler. Tickets for the Premier will be on sale soon and all involved are confident it will be a great success. Please support the Irish Kidney Association by attending the Premier - we promise you a night to remember.

A

new production company called Kilboy Productions have just finished filming two short comedies in and around Kilcormac using local actors. The two shorts will be called Tales of Scarry and will be premiered in the Tullamore Court Hotel on the 2nd November, 2007. Proceeds on the night of the Premier and profits from the sale of the film on DVD will be given to the Irish Kidney Association. The two hilarious shorts will be on one DVD and will be for sale for the Christmas market and should sell very well. The two shorts are based on two bachelors living in a renal area around Kilcormac and gives a comical insight into their daily lives. The film has taken eighteen months to shoot and all involved from scriptwriters, actors and cameramen are from Offaly. The group involved in making their short film have
