It presents as a first part of the course types of meaning and meaning relations both paradigmatic and syntagmatic ones. In the second part, meaning in natural language is presented through extralinguistic features such as context, inferencing, and speech acting.

Course objectives The objective of the course is to:  Introduce students to the principles of semantics and pragmatics.  Draw the attention of students to the complexity of meaning in natural language processing.

Course description The course deals with English word formation with special focus on the inflectional and derivational rules involved. Students are acquainted with English morphemes and the mechanism whereby they contribute to the structure and composition of English word formation. It also deals in the second part with why we study syntactic structures, including lexical categories, phrasal categories, and phrase structure rules.

Form (H) Short course description Course title: Introduction to Translation Previous course requirement: 116 LANE and 125 LANE Course level: Six Course description The course is taught by using handouts and basic translation reference books that discuss the meaning and methods and tools of translation, its types and resources. It also introduces students to types of oral and written translation, and the skills needed in a translator to undertake translation tasks. The course also highlights the role played by translation in transferring knowledge among different countries and in improving levels of understanding of cultural issues. The course also discusses some of the main difficulties and issues that could face the translator because of structural and rhetorical differences between the source language and the target language, and the main techniques of exploring the different linguistic and stylistic choices available to the translator when translating from one language to the other in order to enhance the translation quality through creating a balance among the three basic criteria of translation: accuracy, clarity, and naturalness. Stages of translation are explained: close reading of the text and trying to understand any implicit contextual messages; doing a preliminary translation through moving gradually from accurate translation to clear and natural versions of it. Comparison of tenses in both the source and target languages is done and techniques of doing a translation that is as natural as possible in the translated versions. Course description

The course offers exposure to basic writing and research skills useful for research papers and dissertations. In particular, it offers students the opportunity to learn about academic writing skills such as controlling the mechanics and connective tissue of writing, quoting and referencing skills, various cognitive skills (comparing, contrasting, and summarizing), thinking errors, etc. The second part of the course introduces students to some research skills useful for starting MA and Ph.D. dissertations.
