There are many skyscraper buildings in Shinjuku-Shintoshin area surrounding the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. The absorption & centrifugal chillers for district heating and cooling systems of Hitachi Appliances are used , to run all these buildings air conditioners for cooling. The scale of the centrifugal chillers set in the Shinjuku district cooling and heating center is world-class, 10,000 refrigeration tons. This is equivalent of 14,000 room air conditioners for 13 m² rooms.*2 The use of district heating and cooling systems has increased recently in Japan and overseas because the systems are generally considered to be more energy efficient than having them in individual buildings, they ensure a steady supply of energy and are highly effective in environmental conservation. Based on this, our products are installed in major cities including Shinjuku and facilities such as Haneda Airport as well as the international airports in Thailand and Malaysia by the global expansion of our business. To move toward the achievement of low carbon society, it is said that the smart energy network will expand. This is a network to use energy efficiently by connecting electric power, gas, low-temperature geothermal energy and renewable energy such as solar thermal etc. with a focus on district heating and cooling systems. We would also like to make further contribution to the low carbon society. *2 : Calculated as 10,000 refrigeration tons=35,163kW and the capacity of a room air conditioner for a 13 m2 room is 2.5kW.

temperatures and not directly blow cold air onto people, this is
common knowledge in Japan. However, in the hotter climate of
India, the majority of people need to be cooled down by receiving
cold air directly onto their body. Considering this fact, we changed the function of the sensors in India from the ones in Japan so that
the air conditioners in India can send a cold wind to exactly where
people are. Also, considering the needs of vegetarians, we have
introduced our 3 door refrigerators with the vegetable compartment
in the middle, which is useful for vegetarian people, while 1 or 2 door
refrigerators are mainstream in India. Thus, we can propose new ideas

By cooperating with engineers from various areas, we produced many best-selling products such as a Front-loading washerdryer, which are considered as top-class shares in Japan. Tochigi Works and Our Overseas Group Company (China)
Social contribution activities related to nature conservation in Japan and overseas When the Tochigi Works was established, it created a greenbelt that closely
resembles the original state of the land by transplanting to the roadside trees
indigenous to the site and devising the layout to as far as possible avoid dividing
the natural forest. The plant has designated the greenbelt within its grounds as
a“park factory”and opened a portion of it for use by area residents. It is used as an activities ground for nearby kindergartens and elementary schools. These activities have met with public acclaim, and in October 2010 the Tochigi Works
was accredited as one of 100 cases of corporate green sites that contribute to
biodiversity preservation under the Social and Environmental Green Evaluation System.
At Hitachi Compressor Products (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd. and Hitachi Air-
conditioning & Refrigerating Products (Guangzhou) Co., Ltd. employees and their families participate in tree-planting activities sponsored by the Greening

Hitachi group sets our Environmental Vision to aim toward Sustainable society for environmental management and we position Prevention of Global Warming, Conservation of Resources, and Preservation of Ecosystem as very important activities. We aim to help reduce annual CO 2 emissions by 100 million tonnes by 2025 through Hitachi Products in Environmental Vision 2025. To realize that goal, we move forward with energy conservation on every electrical home appliance and air conditioning product of Hitachi Appliances as well as cutting down environmental burden by reducing the energy use of all of our business facilities. We also supervise the chemicals in the products in cooperation with our supply chain and continue our efforts to reduce transportation energy by modal shift, which is to shift from vehicle and 10
air transport to shipping or rail transport for the environment. Furthermore, we have established Kantou Eco Recycle Co., Ltd. which recycles used room air conditioners, TVs, refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and clothes dryers within our Tochigi Works. Kantou Eco Recycle has been working on making it easier to disassemble and process the products and it has also been promoting to utilize recyclable resources as a recycling plant integrated with the production factory. In addition, we also work on social contribution activities regarding nature conservation such as cooperating in local environment education, green space conservation activities in the plant sites, treeplanting activities with employeesʼ participation etc. with customers, local societies, suppliers and employees.
