ABOUT THE PRESENTER As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Continuing Education Provider, and Clinical Supervisor in private practice in Los Angeles, Michelle Post internationally consults and trains in areas of grief, death notification with children and teens, stress & burn-out prevention, group facilitation, ASIST suicide prevention, executive leadership and team-building. As Manager of Donor Family Aftercare for OneLegacy, she provides staff & community training and bereavement services and is the former chair AOPO Donor Family Services Council and former board member and secretary for National Alliance for Grieving Children. She has been a faculty member for the Global Leadership Symposium hosted by the American Academy of Bereavement and she is also a member of Dr. J. William Worden’s SoCal Bereavement Specialist group. Ms. Post has authored more than 40 guest pieces in newsletters, blogs, and educational membership journals with a focus on caregivers, psychotherapy, parenting, children’s grief, poetry and grief, dreams and grief, holiday grief, and self-growth in a demanding work environment. Her research interests vary from suicide survivors, trauma survivors, organ and tissue donor families, multicultural families, children’s grief and organizational behavior. Most importantly, with work as deeply touching as children’s grief can be, she practices what she preaches in the area of self-care by living a life full of joy and purpose with the hope of inspiring others to have long, meaningful, wellbalanced lives. Feel free to ask her to swing or salsa dance, take an artsy photo or go zip-lining.

EDUCATORS What to Do About the “S” Word – Suicide CPR & First Aid September 20, 2016 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. No cost to attend · Light refreshments will be served In our society, people don’t like to talk about death or plans for the end of life. We are even more apprehensive to mention the “S” word – Suicide. Therefore, we miss obvious natural clues that a child, teen or adult may be in pain and need our acknowledgement and support, and we leave them alone to struggle and potentially get worse. With the aid of research and effective intervention language from LivingWorks, attendees will be able to identify risk factors, learn language to make a clear ask of a child, teen or adult about thoughts of suicide, and identify which students or families may need a higher level of care or intervention to prevent suicide. Attendees will have a chance to sharpen skills in the area of suicide prevention and intervention. Join us as we discover effective ways to keep our community safer from suicide risk. Objectives: • Identify risk factors associated with potential suicide risk • Make a clear ask of a student or adult about thoughts of suicide • Identify which student or adult may need a higher level of care or intervention to prevent suicide

Who should attend?

This seminar is designed for school professionals, teachers, nurses, ministers, counselors, social services, and administrative staff who care for bereaved children, teens and their families.

GENERAL PUBLIC What Have You Done for YOU Lately? Stress Management for Grievers September 20, 2016 6:45p.m.-9:00p.m. Registration: 6:00p.m.-6:45p.m. No cost to the General Public Light refreshments will be served Why This Program: The death of someone close has been listed as the top source of stress on a list of life stressors. Have you been feeling stressed, experiencing physical aches or fatigue on your grief journey? This workshop will explore the impact of stress on the body, provide you a tool to test your level of stress, and use a tool to help develop stress management interventions to help you cope. Those who attend will have a chance to assess their current level of stress and “burnout” and find ways to improve mental and physical health while coping with grief. Join this interactive discussion about what you can do for yourself (and your family and children) to treat your stress symptoms and improve your coping skills. Objectives: • Utilize a burn-out assessment tool to identify at least three symptoms of compassion fatigue • Describe three interventions to manage stress • Create a self-care plan that can be shared with your loved ones to decrease stress and increase coping with the death of someone close.

Who should attend?

PROFESSIONAL CAREGIVERS Understanding Young Hearts: Tips, Tools and Techniques to Heal Grieving Children and Teens September 21, 2016 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration 8:00 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. Lunch break from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. $35 Registration fee for professionals seeking CEU credit. When a sudden or expected death occurs, a family has little time to adjust to this new reality and, in the process, remember to include children and teens in this journey. With the aid of the research of J. William Worden, Ph.D., a DVD called CODENAME: SIMON, and case studies, professionals and beginners will learn about normal child/teen grief and how to talk with children and teens about death and grief. Participants will learn how to educate families, provide death notification, grief support, and counseling to children, teens, and their families. We will discuss techniques to foster connections among the family, educate parents/guardians about how best to support a child and teen, prepare a child/teen to visit the hospital bed-side or go to a viewing/funeral, say goodbye, and debrief afterward along with preparing for return to school and needed support over time.
