1. CARD MAKING You will need: • • • • • •

Thin card and paper in assorted colours Assorted foam or paper shapes or pictures cut from an old magazine Coloured paper modelling straws PVA glue Pencil, ruler, scissors and felt-tip pens or coloured pencils. Envelopes

You can make a variety of greetings cards with just a few crafty bits and pieces. Picket fence card 1.

Fold an A4 sheet of coloured card in half to form a basic A5 greetings card.

2.

Cut some paper modelling straws into 4.5cm lengths to form the fence posts and cut one end of each length into a point for the top of the post.

3.

Space out and glue the posts onto the card so that the overall length of the fence is slightly shorter than a full length straw.

4.

Next take 2 full length straws and flatten them. Then glue them on top of the posts at right angles to form the rails as seen in the photograph.

5.

Glue on foam or paper shapes to decorate or add other details with felt-tip pens or coloured pencils.

6.

To finish, simply add your own special message.

Helen's Top Tip: Don't forget when giving a handmade greetings card, you can also decorate the envelope to make it extra-special. © Created For You * 35 Landers Reach * Lytchett Matravers * Poole * Dorset * BH16 6NB 01202 620057 [email protected] www.KidsCraftBox.co.uk www.FilledPartyBags.co.uk

2. FLOWER POT NOTE OR PHOTO HOLDER You will need: • • • • • • •

Flower pot - terracotta or plastic Assorted shapes - flowers or butterflies Green drinking straws Mini (decorative) sprung clothes pegs PVA glue Play clay or similar Scissors and felt-tip pens

1.

Glue a mini clothes peg to the back of a few foam flower or butterfly shapes. If you do not have any pre-cut foam shapes, draw and cut your own shapes from scraps of foam or card or cut pictures from an old magazine and mount onto card. Set aside to allow the glue to dry.

2.

Decorate the outside of your flower pot by gluing on an assortment of foam or paper shapes.

3.

Put some play clay into the bottom of the pot - if you are using a plastic pot, use more clay to give the pot more stability.

4.

Cut the green drinking straws to various lengths to create flower stems and push into the play clay to form a pretty arrangement.

5.

When the glue is dry and the pegs are set firmly on the back of your flowers, attach them to the tops of the flower stems. Now you are ready to use your holder for little notes or reminders or to display small photographs.

This would make an ideal gift for Mother's Day too.

3. PENCIL POT You will need: • Cardboard tube - eg toilet or kitchen roll inner tube • Scraps of thin card and wrapping paper, wallpaper or pictures from an old magazine • Scissors, pencil, ruler, pair of compasses and glue. 1.

To make a base for the pencil pot, measure the diameter of the tube and, on a piece of thin card, draw a circle this size. Then draw another circle, 2cm larger in diameter, around the first circle, so that the centres of the 2 circles are in the same place.

2.

Cut out the larger circle. Then make cuts from the edge of the larger circle into the drawn edge of the smaller circle all the way round, about 1cm apart. Fold up the little tabs you have created to make a lip and glue the tabs to the outside of one end of the tube to form the base.

3.

Measure and cut a piece of coloured card to fit around the tube, allowing a little extra length to overlap. Glue in place, covering all of the tube and the tabs at the bottom. Now you have a neat surface to decorate.

4.

Cut out a selection of decorative shapes from a piece of wrapping paper, wallpaper or an old magazine and glue onto your pencil pot to decorate as required.

5.

Set aside to allow the glue to dry and then fill with your pens and pencils, or give as a useful gift.

Variation: This tube could also be used to store coins. You could add a removable lid with a slot for your money.

4. LOLLY STICK TIDY BOX You will need: • •

Approximately 40 lollipop or craft sticks PVA glue

1.

Lay out 10 sticks side by side and glue 2 more sticks at right angles to the first 10, and about 1cm in from the rounded edges, to form the underside/base of the box as shown in the diagram.

2.

Carefully turn the base over and glue on another 2 sticks in the same position to form a sturdy structure.

3.

Build up the sides of the box by adding and gluing another two sticks at right angles to the last two, about 1cm in from the other two edges.

4.

Continue adding sticks, one at each side and alternating at each level at right angles to the last, until your box is the height you need. Using 40 sticks will make a box about 3cm high.

5. FOAM-COVERED NOTEBOOK OR ALBUM You will need: • Sheet of funky foam • Paper • Assorted foam shapes • Wool, string or ribbon • PVA glue • Hole punch • Pencil and scissors 1.

Take a few loose sheets of paper and punch a series of holes along one edge, about 3cm apart. (eg Use plain or lined paper if you're making a notebook or sugar paper if you're making an album or scrapbook.)

2.

To make the notebook or album cover, cut 2 pieces of foam slightly larger than the sheets of paper.

3.

Place the paper on top of one piece of foam, lining up the edges which will form the spine and centreing the paper between the top and bottom of the foam. Mark through the holes in the paper onto the foam to show where you will need to punch holes in the foam and punch through the foam with a single hole punch. Repeat for the second piece of foam.

4.

Place the 2 pieces of foam and the paper together in a 'sandwich' and thread a long piece of ribbon, string or wool up and down through the holes starting and finishing at the same end, ie so that you go through each hole twice.

5.

Punch a hole through a large foam heart and thread onto the ribbon to decorate.

6.

Tie the ends of the ribbon into a double bow to secure. Trim off any excess ribbon.

7.

Stick on assorted foam shapes or other decorations to personalise your book.

8.

Put to one side to allow the glue to dry.

6. ANIMAL FRIEZE

You will need: • Thin card or paper • Pencil, scissors and ruler • Felt-tip pens or coloured pencils 1.

Cut a strip of paper or thin card approximately 24cm x 7cm.

2.

Fold into four sections so that you have a concertina of four 6cm x 7cm rectangles.

3.

On the top section, draw an elephant or lion as shown, or any animal of your choice. Make sure that the animal's body touches the left and right-hand edges of the rectangle.

4.

Cut around your animal design, making sure you leave a piece uncut at each side, so that your animals stay joined together.

5.

Open out and colour or decorate the four animals however you wish.

6.

Repeat to make a frieze of any length by joining the blocks together, and display on a wall.

Variations: Use longer strips of paper and make more folds to make more animals at a time. Use larger paper to make larger rectangles and, therefore, larger animals! © Created For You * 35 Landers Reach * Lytchett Matravers * Poole * Dorset * BH16 6NB 01202 620057 [email protected] www.KidsCraftBox.co.uk www.FilledPartyBags.co.uk

7. JIGSAW PUZZLE You will need: • • •

Thin card Photograph or picture cut from an old magazine Scissors, pencil, ruler and glue

1.

Glue the picture onto the thin card to give it extra thickness, then trim around the edge of the picture to get rid of any excess card.

2.

Turn the picture over and, using a pencil and ruler, mark the card into a random grid of geometric shapes. Don't make the shapes too small or complex, unless you want a very challenging puzzle at the end!

3.

Cut along the lines you have marked.

4.

Now you have your own jigsaw puzzle and are ready to reassemble the picture.

8. WELLY BOOT KEEPERS You will need: • • • •

Scraps of thin card or foam Wooden clothes pegs (with spring) PVA glue Pencil, scissors and felt-tip pens

1.

Cut a rectangle of foam or card approximately 8cm x 4cm (big enough to hide the clothes peg but not so big that the card will bend when the peg is used).

2.

Decorate with foam shapes or draw a design onto card with felt-tip pens. Add a name if you wish.

3.

You could also cut a fancy edge around the rectangle with fancy cut scissors if you have them.

4.

Glue the clothes peg onto the centre back of the rectangle and set aside to allow the glue to dry.

5.

When dry, use the peg to clip the tops of your 2 wellington boots together so that you'll always be able to find both of them!

Variations: You could also use these pegs to hang up your painted pictures to dry.

Thin card or foam in assorted colours Foam or paper shapes, stickers or small pictures cut from old magazines Pencil, ruler, scissors and glue Felt-tip pens or colouring pencils Rubber stamps and inkpad (optional)

1.

For each bookmark, measure and cut a strip of card or foam approximately 23cm by 4cm.

2.

Decorate by sticking on foam or paper shapes or stickers or use small pictures cut from an old magazine.

3.

Alternatively, draw and colour your own designs onto white or light-coloured card or create designs with rubber stamps, if you have them, and then colour them in.

Your unique handmade bookmarks will make ideal little gifts for your family and friends.

Large piece of paper, eg from a roll of plain packing/wrapping paper or use the reverse side of some spare wallpaper Felt-tip pens/markers, pencils, crayons or kids' paints Coloured paper, scraps of fabric, buttons, scissors and PVA glue (optional)

1.

Lay down flat and still on the piece of paper and get someone to draw carefully round you with a pencil or marker pen. Be careful not to mark your clothes.

2.

Now bring the outline shape of your body to life by using pens or paints to add facial features and expressions. Draw or paint on clothes and shoes or take more time cutting out clothes shapes from coloured paper, card or fabric scraps and sticking these in place. You could also add some old buttons if you have them.

3.

Set aside for the glue or paint to dry where necessary, then hang your life-size picture up for all to see.

Do this project again in a year's time and see how you've grown!
