OCTOBER 2013

Footprints Silent Art Auction and Exhibition 2013 On the 5th September 2013, Footprints in Brisbane held its third Art Exhibition and Silent Auction with the amazing support of the Discount Art Warehouse in Fortitude Valley. Art workshops commenced on the 12th of April 2013 and ran every Friday morning for the next 19 weeks. Many Footprints artists joined the workshops and created the art space that was dynamic and inspirational, with support from staff members Sherry Black and Terry Gold, and the volunteer art mentor Sally Cox from the Brisbane Institute of Art. Throughout the workshops, the artists explored their themes, colours and technique, giving each other feedback constantly and gently. In the lead up to the event, the energy of the workshops became heightened as many art pieces were completed. When the art pieces were installed on the exhibition wall – big thanks to Nemeer Davis from the Brisbane Institute of Art for designing the exhibition – it was a wonderful accomplishment for each individual artist as well as the whole group. The exhibition room was filled with amazing colours! The exhibition/silent auction evening was successful and many members of the community came to celebrate the event. Jay Hendricks, Footprints Mental Health Manager was the MC, Robert Cavallucci, member for Brisbane Central officially opened the evening and Vikki Howard Councillor for Central Ward announced the People’s Choice winner. Congratulations to Donna James and her painting ‘Big Smiley” which received the most votes. It was a privilege to exhibit wonderful paintings of Terrance Stewart in a memorial display, as Terry was a respected member of the art group who sadly passed away in June this year. Dee Jackson gave a tribute speech and his family read Terrance’s poetry.

People’s Choice Award 2013

A total of 26 artists displayed their works and there were over a hundred and thirty pieces of work on display. It was a lovely evening and guests enjoyed a variety of drinks and beautiful canapés provided and organised by Dee, Carissa and Ryan. Margaret Campton read her poetries ”Sunlight” and “Happiness” and the Footprints music group the Dreaming Stars played “Wish you were there” by Pink Floyd on opening and entertained everyone during the evening. The exhibition was closed by the CEO of Footprints, Cherylee Taylor who congratulated the artists for their wonderful achievements and expressed warm thank you to everyone who was involved in the event. Contents A total of over 60 people attended the event and proceeds to artists were more than $2000. Welcome Ryan to PIR Who would you like to invite over for dinner? Why? My girlfriend’s grandfather, I never had the chance to meet him and by all accounts he would be a very entertaining guest! He was a big larrikin with a heart of gold. What makes you laugh? Life and people. I find situations and people’s reactions very hilarious at different times. I come from a family that likes to see the lighter side to things and not take ourselves too seriously. Some of the best and funniest events I can remember came about through unexpected situations. I also find that in hindsight many of my life’s difficult situations turn into fantastic stories. What book means a lot to you? Why? I love reading a lot of different books but I think the one that sticks out the most would have to be The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo. It sparked a lot of different thoughts and ideas and made me start to question and investigate my life in a different way. Have you ever travelled overseas? If so, what was your favourite country? Yes, quite a few times. It’s difficult to decide on a country because it sometimes depends on the experiences you had there and if they were particularly fun or difficult, rather than the place itself. I think it would have to be a close call between Argentina and Ireland. Both have such lovely people and amazing landscapes. I was lucky enough to have an absolutely spectacular time in each beautiful place. What is your favourite day of the week? Why? Nothing quite feels as exciting as a Friday. Whether it’s catching up with friends, heading out of town, or just having a few unplanned days ahead, it has a feeling that no other day seems to match.

Welcome IHSW Judith What is your greatest achievement? Having a wonderful family and good education. What do you love about your job? Learning new things, meeting different people who are nice and friendly towards me. What music do you like? Country song and romantic music. When was the last time you laughed? I always make myself happy and laugh all the time to have a positive and healthy life. If you could have one superpower what would it be and why? A real magician, so I could have the power to make the whole world peaceful.

Welcome Paul to HOP & RSP Who would you like to invite over for dinner? Why? My family who all live in New Zealand it has been a while since I have seen them all and maybe Steve Jobs. I love his philosophies on life. “Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The trouble-makers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently…they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.” What is your favourite movie? Why? My favourite movie would have to be “The Princess Bride” Why because it is inconceivable. What is your greatest achievement? I am the world’s greatest Dad!! If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why? My superpower would be time travel. Think of all the fun you could have. I could eat the same bit of pork crackle over and over and over and over……… mmmmm food. What is your favourite day of the week? Why? I don’t have a favourite day but I have a favourite section that would be from Friday afternoon to Sunday night. I get to work on all the unfinished projects I have started. Maybe one day I will finish one. Have you ever travelled overseas? If so, what was your favourite country? Yes I have travelled overseas. I have crossed the ditch from the land of the long white cloud – Aotearoa. However my favourite country would have to be Lesotho, travelling up the Sani Pass to the highest pub in Africa to enjoy a Gluhwein. What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to be a fighter jet pilot. Maybe there is still hope for me.
