Future hunger challenges must solved by reducing food waste

By 2050 the world population will reach 9 billion. By then, food production must be increased by 70% to meet the demand. Reducing food waste should be among the main focus areas. source: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) - 2011

Food Losses and Food Waste »Food losses« measures the decrease in edible food mass (excluding inedible parts and seed) throughout the part of the supply chain that leads to edible food for human consumption - loss at the production, postharvest and processing stages. »Food waste« are food losses occurring during the retail and consumption stages due to the behavior of retailers and consumers. source: Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) - 2011 www.stopspildafmad.dk

• lack of knowledge about what food Not my fault! waste really is • the-others-will-take-out-of attitude • use-and-throw-away culture • lack of knowledge about leftovers, portion sizes and planning • disrespect for food • lack of help from retailers, food producers and other stakeholders • culture and generation: the older generations waste less • economy: people with lower incomes are wasting less food • people buy food with the longest shelf life, although they eat the food on the very same day www.stopspildafmad.dk

Food waste in Denmark

Danish consumers' yearly food waste is equivalent to 2,93 billion US Dollars (2,15 billion Euro). Mostly vegetables, bread and dairy products. Every Danish citizen in average wastes 63 kilos (139 lbs) of good edible food every year. The total annual food waste in Denmark is estimated at 540.000 tonnes. sources: Danish EPA, Danish Agriculture & Food Council, Aarhus University, CONCITO, The Institute of Food and Resource Economics - 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011 www.stopspildafmad.dk

Food waste worldwide There are almost 7 billion people on the planet and 925 million are starving, yet we produce enough food waste to feed 3 billion people.

The global food waste is measured to 1,3 billion tons annually - or enough to feed 3 billion people. Between 30% and 50% of the world's food ends up as waste. sources: Chairman of Slow Fish Advisory Committee Silvio Greco, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Aarhus University, Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries - 2010, 2011 www.stopspildafmad.dk

Food waste and hunger USA: Approximately 40% of all food produced in the United States gets wasted. 5% of U.S. food waste would be able to feed 4 million people for one day.

Italy: Italians annually waste 100 million tons of food and it corresponds to a value of 37 billion Euro. It would be enough to feed 44 million people. sources: Coldiretti, Università di Bologna, PLoS ONE, Jonathan Bloom - 2010, 2011

Food waste causes rise in CO2 emissions

It is estimated that 14% of the world's CO2 emissions are caused by food waste alone. Food production causes 20% to 30% of climate pollution in Europe. Food causes one third of total CO2 emissions per Dane. sources: CONCITO, The Danish Council of Ethics, European Commission Technical Report, Lise Faurschou Hastrup - 2009, 2010

Food waste and CO2 If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be equivalent to taking every 4th car off the road.

The Danes' consumption of food creates yearly greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 2,8 tonnes. Yearly wasted food in Norway pollutes as much as 160.000 cars. sources: LoveFoodHateWaste.com, The Danish Society of Engineers IDA, report 'IDA's Climate Plan 2050', Politiken, Aftenposten, Svenska Dagbladet 2008, 2010 www.stopspildafmad.dk

Restaurants, canteens and kitchens contribute to food waste Food waste from Danish canteens is estimated at 15.750 tons a year. 95% of restaurant managers indicate that food waste occurs mostly due to the behavior of restaurant's and canteen's clients. 46% of consumers in the western world are willing to pay more for food, if the restaurant is making a serious effort to minimize food waste. sources: Danish EPA, Danish Diet & Nutrition Association, Unilever Food Solutions, Sustainable Restaurant Association, AgroTech, Compass Group - 2010, 2011, 2012

One can minimize food waste, with there will always be some degree of food waste. www.stopspildafmad.dk

Part 2: The Solution

www.stopspildafmad.dk

Consumer power can change the world. Use it! You have the power over the retailers - they do not have the power over you! Stop being a consumer zombie! Must... consume... must... consume... must... consume...

Must... consume... must... consume... must... consume...

Our 3 advices on less food waste

1. In the supermarket: Purchase only the amount of food that you need. 2. In the kitchen: Prepare only the amount of food that you can eat. 3. After a meal: If you have leftovers, put them quickly in the freezer for another day or in the refrigerator and eat them the next day.

Consumers: say NO to food waste!

Shop with your head and not with your stomach. Eat leftovers. Buy only what you need and use what you have bought. Use what you have bought before buying new.
