How to Conduct an Impactful FOOD DRIVE Planning For Your Food Drive

Educate Your Group About Hunger in Orange County

The WGYB info sheet in this packet has facts and statistics to share with your group and learn more about the children you are serving! Get to know Giving Children Hope-check out our website (www.gchope.org) or Facebook page (Facebook.com/GCHope).

Be Creative in the Education Process

Have everyone fast for a day or skip a meal to understand what these children endure. If you are a church group, pray for the children during your fast.

Getting Started Set A Goal

Set start/end dates (a month is a good amount of time), a goal amount of food (each backpack is approx. 22 pounds), and a date to deliver the food to GCHope. Be sure to promote information about the food drive in prominent locations and on social media. Get the contact information of everyone participating. A sign-up sheet is provided.

Promotional Materials

If you would like promotional material please ask! We would be happy to provide a backpack to display or send a PDF so you can print flyers.

The Menu

A menu of food is provided as a guideline. All the contents will fill one backpack. Average cost to fill each backpack is $20-25. This will serve two children and their parents for an entire weekend.

Participant Cost

For those who are able, we ask that a $5 check made payable to Giving Children Hope be added to each box to partially cover administrative costs. Please do not feel obligated to do so, but if you can it will help the program tremendously.

We’ve Got Your Back Fact Sheet What is We’ve Got Your Back (WGYB)?

The WGYB program is a weekend nutrition club for Orange County school-age students who are defined as homeless by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. There are more than 30,000 recorded homeless children in Orange County. Children in the program receive a backpack filled with nutritionally balanced food and nutritional guidance each week. In the 2013-2014 school year, GCHope fed 3,300 school-age children every week. According to The Journal of Contemporary Social Services, homeless families are less likely to have access to regular nutritious meals and food, which results in nutritional deficiencies. Unstably-housed children also face a greater risk for mental and emotional stress, with these children worrying about where their next meal will come from or where they will sleep at night - worries that their counterparts do not have.

$20 sponsors a child & their family for a month! $240 sponsors that same child & their family for an entire year! Totals children served in WGYB: 2,562 Total schools enrolled in WGYB: 47
