Food Bank Featured at Pennsylvania Farm Show Visitors to the 99th Pennsylvania Farm Show found something new this year. The ‘Fill a Glass with Hope’ campaign was launched at the Farm Show to raise awareness and funds for the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s fresh milk distribution program. On January 8, a large crowd gathered at the Farm Show complex to witness the unveiling of the 25th butter sculpture, an annual rite to kick-off Farm Show week. This year’s sculpture depicts a food pantry worker pouring milk into a glass held by a little boy standing next to his mother. A dairy farmer and his cow watch, standing next to a refrigerated case filled with gallons of milk, the words ‘Fill a Glass with Hope’ carved above. The sculpture is sponsored by Mid-Atlantic Dairy Association and Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion Program, is made from half a ton of butter donated by Land O’Lakes and was sculpted by Jim Victor and Marie Pelton.

Dave Smith, executive director of

“For 25 years, the butter sculpture has been a landmark the PA Dairymen’s Association and PA Agriculture Secretary within the Pennsylvania Farm Show,” said Agriculture George Greig kick off the ‘Fill a Secretary George Greig. “I’m proud that this year Glass with Hope’ campaign. showcases the department’s pioneering initiative that Photo: Alex Bellotti, gets milk into the hands of Pennsylvanians who need it Commonwealth Media Services the most. This milk distribution program is only possible because of partners in our dairy industry and at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.” During the Farm Show guests were encouraged to donate money to ‘Fill a Glass with Hope’ on site at the milkshake booth in the food court or at the Weis booth near the Today’s Agriculture exhibit. The first 25 people to donate each day at each location received a coupon for a free PA Dairymen’s Association milkshake. Also supporting the ‘Fill a Glass with Hope’ campaign were AgChoice Farm Credit, GIANT Food Stores, Homeland Center/Homeland Hospice, Land O’Lakes, MidAtlantic Dairy Association, Modjeski and Masters, Inc., PA Dairymen’s Association, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Pennsylvania State Resource Family Association, Valley Grange #1360 and Weis Markets. “At Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, we know the nutritious value of milk, and we want to bring its benefits to everyone in need. Since launching our program in June, our distribution of refrigerated milk has increased to approximately 3,000 quarts per week,” said Central Pennsylvania Food Bank Executive Director Joe Arthur. “We are excited to grow the program, and the ‘Fill a Glass with Hope’ campaign will enable us to put more milk on the tables of Pennsylvanians facing hunger.” Online donations to ‘Fill a Glass with Hope’ can still be made at centralpafoodbank.org/milk.

The holiday decorations have been stored away, the kids are back in school and we have returned to our normal routine. The holidays are a time of celebration for most, but can be a very challenging time for families struggling to put food on the table. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is blessed with thousands of compassionate, giving supporters who are willing to join us in the fight against hunger. I continue to be absolutely overwhelmed by how fortunate we are to live in an area that is so generous and caring.

Joe Arthur Executive Director

Volunteer participation at the Food Bank during the holiday season was incredible. The holiday spirit was exemplified as young and old alike devoted time to help their neighbors in need. Daily we saw individuals, corporations, church groups, school groups, neighborhoods and groups of friends from across central PA rallying to give food, time and money to help fight hunger. The support received throughout the holiday season is essential, but we must remember hunger isn’t just a problem that happens over the holidays. The Food Bank will be providing healthy food to as many or more children, families and seniors in the coming months as we did in December. The sad reality is that the need for food and services continues to increase. While there are indicators that the economy is improving, many people are still struggling. Every day across the Commonwealth 1 in 7 people, and 1 in 5 children, are at risk of missing vital, nutritious meals due to financial hardships. The collaboration seen during the holidays needs to continue throughout the year for us to meet the challenge to eradicate hunger. I’d like to thank the entire community for supporting the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. Your donations of food, funds and time enable us to set a place at the table for all our neighbors in need.

Food Bank Facts 170 food drives took place during the holiday season, with more than 77,000 pounds of food donated. Food Bank volunteers donated more than 9,000 hours throughout the holiday season. More than 50,000 pounds of turkey was distributed to families by the Food Bank in November and December.

Food Bank Provides Holiday Meals The traditional turkey dinner is a staple in millions of American households during the holiday season. Yet, it is amazing how many people take that holiday meal for granted, not realizing that many of our neighbors won’t share in the tradition — at least not without the help of others — because they just can’t afford it. To assist those neighbors in need, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, with the support of numerous community partners, distributed more than 2,400 holiday meal boxes to families facing hunger in November and December. The lines were long at the Newberry Church of Christ on November 20, as they were at all the holiday distribution sites. People lined up in the cold waiting for the chance to receive all the ingredients for a traditional holiday meal. At Newberry Church of Christ, people were greeted, given a numbered ticket and asked to wait downstairs, out of the cold in the large fellowship room. When their number was called, they went into the distribution room where they were greeted by smiling volunteers, who handed out a frozen turkey, stuffing, corn, green beans, fresh potatoes, fresh milk and other items for a meal. In Williamsport, at the Food Bank’s Lycoming County warehouse, and in Dauphin and Lancaster counties, the scene played out similarly. Hundreds of people stood in line, braving the cold, patiently waiting for their box. Brenda was one of those waiting in line in Williamsport at the December distribution. “I’m on disability with my daughter and two grandchildren living with me,” she said. “There won’t be much under the tree this year, but this food will give us Christmas. It’s a blessing to have a meal like this – we have a lot to be thankful for.” “Families struggling with hunger face even more stress during the holiday season,” said Joe Arthur, Food Bank executive director. “The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s goal this year was to provide as many families as possible in our community a nutritious, traditional holiday meal.” In Lancaster, the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation/Culliton Family partnered with the Food Bank to provide holiday meal boxes to more than 770 Lancaster families. As Sandy left the Crispus Attucks Community Center in Lancaster, she expressed her gratitude for the food her family received. “My husband and I are To all of you at the Food Bank, out of work, and we don’t qualify for I just wanted to say thank any benefits. We always struggle to have enough food for our two daughters. This you so much for all of the will give us a holiday meal we wouldn’t wonderful food I received for my have otherwise – it’s such a blessing.” The clients served throughout the year are grateful for all they receive, but there is a special joy during the holidays when they see how the Food Bank works to make their Thanksgiving and Christmas meals special, as evidenced by this note received after the distribution at Newberry Church of Christ (see right).

On October 29, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank received a $10,000 donation from Capital Wine & Spirits LLC – one of the largest wholesaler/brokers of fine wine and spirits in Pennsylvania and a member of the Charmer Sunbelt Group – on behalf of Capital’s associates and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board (PLCB). No public funds were used in this donation. The donation enabled the Food Bank to purchase and distribute approximately 625 turkeys during the holiday season. The day of the check presentation, 35 associates from Capital Wine & Spirits volunteered at the Food Bank packing boxes and sorting food. “On behalf of the Capital Wine & Spirits team, I am grateful that we are in a position to continue to support the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and our community,” said PJ Horgan, Capital Wine & Spirits, LLC, president. “This donation will not only go to help feed Pennsylvania families in need, but we hope that it builds awareness for the demands of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank throughout the year.” On November 30, GIANT Food Stores’ Great Turkey Give Back campaign helped kick-off the Food Bank’s Turkey Drive with a donation of 1,000 frozen turkeys. For the past 15 years, GIANT Food Stores has contributed 1,000 frozen turkeys to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s annual Turkey Drive. “The fight against hunger occurs year round for many in our local communities and GIANT’S Great Turkey Give Back helps to provide a holiday meal for those who may have otherwise gone without,” said John MacDonald, GIANT’s director of marketing and external communications. “As part of our company’s ongoing better neighbor efforts and in the spirit of giving this holiday season, GIANT is excited to donate more than 3,500 turkeys companywide to kickstart holiday food drives for our regional food bank partners, like the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.”

Governor Tom Corbett, along with First Lady Susan Corbett, encouraged Pennsylvanians to donate to food banks statewide during the holidays and year round as they delivered turkeys and boxes of food to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in December. The Corbetts, along with Governor’s Office and Residence staff, donated the food during a voluntary month-long office food drive. “The holiday season is about giving back and helping those in need,” said Gov. Corbett. “Susan and I are grateful we can do our part, by donating this food today. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and other food banks across the commonwealth deserve our gratitude for making sure no one goes hungry 365 days a year.”

Modjeski and Masters, Inc. of Mechanicsburg, one of the top bridge engineering firms in the world, contributed to the Food Bank’s annual Turkey Drive in December. Employees this year donated 983 pounds of food and more than 250 frozen turkeys at the Harrisburg warehouse. C&S Wholesale Grocers made a donation of 380 turkeys to once again support the Food Bank’s annual Turkey Drive. Since 2002, C&S has supported the Food Bank’s efforts to provide holiday meals to families in central PA by donating frozen turkeys.

Making Hunger THEIR Business — LEPCO Lawn Equipment Parts Company (LEPCO), based in Marietta, is a wholesale distributor of quality outdoor power equipment, parts and accessories serving retail dealerships across the northeastern United States. This year, LEPCO celebrates 45 years of providing superior products and exceptional customer service to their customers. Established in 1970 by Merrell Clark, and now led by his son, Jeff, LEPCO remains a family business dedicated not only to their customers and employees, but also to the local community. The company supports a variety of programs and efforts to benefit local organizations including hosting an annual holiday celebration for children from the Lancaster Day Care Center, sponsoring a portion of the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, and supporting the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. As a sponsor of the Taste of Central Pennsylvania and the Taste of Lancaster County, LEPCO helps to support the Food

Bank’s community outreach and fundraising. In addition, they encourage employee involvement by sponsoring semi-annual food drives at LEPCO and by organizing a volunteer day at the Food Bank. In addition to the variety of organizations that LEPCO supports, the company also encourages their employees to help support charitable organizations of their choice through a generous matching gifts program, and helps to support employee led initiatives such as the creation of a company team to participate in and fundraise for the Conquer Run supporting the Four Diamonds Fund. “We are lucky to have a team of employees who are motivated to share our good fortune with the local community,” said Jeff Clark, president, LEPCO. “A great example of this is illustrated by our partnership with the Food Bank. Whether through monetary donations, volunteering time, or our annual food drives, I am always excited to witness the LEPCO family rallying behind such a worthy cause.”

Food Bank Receives Grant from Walmart for New Truck The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a Walmart State Giving Grant in the amount of $125,000 to purchase a new 26’ refrigerated truck. The truck will be utilized at the Food Bank’s Williamsport warehouse to expand our capacity and efficiencies for food pick-up and delivery in our rural, northern tier. Food distribution from the Williamsport warehouse has nearly doubled in the past four years. In just the past year, 10 new program partners have signed on to our burgeoning network of program partners, bringing membership to 225 partners in 11 counties served by the Williamsport warehouse. Of these, approximately 75% take delivery from Central Pennsylvania Food Bank trucks. The addition of this vehicle will permit the Food Bank to meet this increasing need, offering a community service that provides nutritious and varied food products to thousands of individuals at-risk for hunger in the northernmost region of the Food Bank’s service territory. This Walmart State Giving Grant will enhance the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s ability to provide food and delivery services to our partner agencies so that they can keep their shelves sufficiently stocked with nutritious food for individuals and families facing hunger.

On Sunday, October 26, approximately 1,000 guests enjoyed samples from 50 of the area’s finest food and beverage purveyors at the 27th annual Taste of Central Pennsylvania, which was held in downtown Harrisburg at Strawberry Square. The Taste of Central Pennsylvania remains a choice event with patrons and vendors alike, who know their attendance and participation directly supports the Food Bank’s mission of fighting hunger, improving lives and strengthening communities. Since its inception in 1988, the event has raised nearly $2.6 million to feed our neighbors in need. Patrons had the opportunity to sample desserts like chocolate chip peanut butter pie, warm Hershey S’mores and chocolate coconut bread pudding. Fallthemed samples included apple cider pulled chicken, apple crumb cake with mulled apple cider sorbet and an open-faced cranberry slider with an apple butter and sweet potato spread. Other entrees included maple glazed pork belly confit, lobster mac and cheese and smoked brisket with barbeque cherry sauce. The Taste features an awards program for vendors. This year, Chef Michael Harants with the Naval Supply Systems Command, Timothy Harris from The Pennsylvania School of Culinary Arts, and local night out columnist Sarah Bozich rated each vendor in the categories of Best Food, Best Beverage, Best Dessert, and Best in Show. Final Cut Steak House, located in

the Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course in Grantville, walked away with two awards, including Best in Show and Best Dessert. Café 1500 earned the Best Food honor, while the Best Beverage award went to Tropical Smoothie Café. In addition, patrons were encouraged to vote for their favorite vendor by making an additional cash donation to the Food Bank at each vendor’s table. This year’s “People’s Choice Award” went to a first-time event participant and winner of the Best Food honor, Café 1500. Guests also enjoyed participating in raffles and were entertained by music performances by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia from Lebanon Valley College, Pat Cusick, and Songsmith. The Hilton Harrisburg hosted the pre-event VIP Reception where media sponsor WGAL’s Janelle Stelson spoke about the important work done by the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. The reception also featured the live auction of an exclusive dinner package featuring a four course meal for eight by HERSHEY Entertainment Complex Executive Chef Charlie Gipe and Hilton Harrisburg Corporate Executive Chef John Reis. The dinner package sold for $6,000. Entertainment during the reception was provided by pianist Nate Carabello. The next Taste of Central Pennsylvania event will be held Sunday, Oct. 25, 2015. Nabisco & Giant Food Stores Join Together to Support Central Pennsylvania Food Bank

Nabisco and GIANT Food Stores joined forces in December to support the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank in their efforts to provide meals during the holiday season. The two combined to donate more than 6,700 pounds of Nabisco food items and volunteered their time to sort the donated goods and assist with holiday meal preparation at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “We are grateful to continue this partnership with Giant and Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to help fight hunger in our local communities,” said Daniel Shiner, customer business lead, Nabisco. “The 12 pallets of Nabisco food products we’ve donated are the result of a joint effort across GIANT Food Stores. This is an important part of our joint mission and a collective effort to support those with food needs during the holidays and throughout the year.” “We are proud to partner with Nabisco to raise more awareness in support of hunger relief efforts, particularly during the holidays,” said John MacDonald, director of marketing & external communications, GIANT Food Stores. “With today’s generous donation, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank can help brighten the holiday season for even more local families struggling to make ends meet.”

Wegmans Donates 20,000 Pounds of Food to Central Pennsylvania Food Bank On November 13, Wegmans Food Markets donated more than 20,000 pounds of food to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank as part of a cooperative project with WITF-FM listeners. As part of a one-day special fundraising and food-raising campaign, Wegmans donated a truckload of food to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank for contributions made to WITF during the campaign. The special one-day promotion, held on Thursday, November 6, raised more than $30,000 for WITF, resulting in the full match of more than 10 tons of food from Wegmans for the Food Bank. The donated food will provide nearly 17,000 meals in central PA. “The number of people needing food assistance is at an all-time high and continues to grow,” said Joe Arthur, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank executive director. “This donation, made possible by WITF’s generous listeners and Wegmans, will provide healthy meals for thousands of families in our communities.” “Partnering with local food banks is an important way we make a difference in every community we serve,” said Wegmans Mechanicsburg store manager Bob Finn. “Food for the hungry is one of our top giving priorities and we’re proud to continue the tradition of this annual campaign.” This is the seventh year of the campaign with Wegmans and WITF. Wegmans has donated more than 140,000 pounds of food to the Food Bank to match donations made to WITF during that time. Food Bank Partners with Habitat for Humanity Central Pennsylvania Food Bank was a proud partner of Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area as they dedicated a new home in Harrisburg. The dedication ceremony took place on November 13 at the home located at 1941 Zarker Street. Members of the Thaikia Reid family were guests of honor at the dedication ceremony as they received the keys to their new home. The family of four contributed more than 350 sweat equity hours toward the completion of the home, which was a Habitat for Humanity rehab project. The Food Bank contributed food items to fill the cabinets, refrigerator and freezer for the family. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has partnered with Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area since 2005 to assist in fulfillment of their mission to ensure simple, decent and affordable homes for low-income families in the Harrisburg area.

Weis Markets Donates $100,000 to Food Bank For the 2nd consecutive year, Weis Markets has made an extraordinary donation of $100,000 to support the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. The donation will support the Food Bank’s increasing emphasis on highly nutritious products, as well as support the BackPack and ElderShare programs throughout the 27 counties served by the Food Bank. The gift will enable the Food Bank to acquire food directly from Weis’ store inventory, thus leveraging Weis’ tremendous buying power. “We are incredibly grateful to receive this very significant donation from Weis Markets,” said Joe Arthur, Food Bank executive director. “By dedicating these funds to our mission, Weis Markets will make an enormous positive impact, particularly for the most vulnerable people at-risk for hunger, children and seniors.” In addition to Weis’ financial support of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Weis has donated nearly two million pounds of food in the last five years, the equivalent of more than 1.6 million meals provided to our neighbors in need.

Stuffing Busses for the Food Bank Two busses were stuffed with food in November in support of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. On November 15, Penn State Athletics and the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank partnered to “Stuff a Bus” at the Penn State/Temple football game. Centre County residents, Penn State students, staff and fans were encouraged to stuff the bus with enough canned goods to fill the bus. “Stuff a Bus” was also supported by Weis Markets, who collected canned goods at stores in the State College area. The following week, Nov. 17-21, 99.3 KISS-FM was back living on a bus to receive donations for the Food Bank. Mike Miller of KISS-FM lived on the bus for a week doing live broadcasts at Weis Markets locations on the east and west shores. Mike was living large, literally, in a donated bus from Premiere 1 Limousine, and managed to, once more, fill his living quarters with more than a ton of food! Between the two events, more than three tons of food was donated, which will provide more than 5,000 meals here in central PA!

Mary’s Helpers Food Pantry After retiring from a 50-year career as an educator, Sister Sue Ann knew her next calling – to help the less fortunate. Seven years ago the Steelton Prince of Peace Parish opened its clothing bank, and Mary’s Helpers Food Pantry followed a few months later. “We served 30 families when we first opened,” said Sister Sue Ann. “Now we are serving 75 families each month. There is a great spirit of community here. Everyone helps everyone else.” The temperatures outside are frigid, but the warmth and compassion are apparent the moment you walk in the door and are greeted by Sister Sue Ann. The volunteers work individually with each client, assisting them with food choices, sharing recipes and offering a welcoming smile. A familylike atmosphere is evident, with each person greeted by first name, and more than clothing and food being offered. “We want to make everyone feel comfortable,” said Sister Sue Ann. “Sometimes that means just talking about problems and listening.” Barry has been coming to the pantry for five years. When he first came he was nervous because he didn’t know what to expect. “I worked in construction before I retired, and it was hard to ask for help,” said Barry. “The people here are really nice and make you feel at home.” Six months ago the pantry also began a new wellness initiative. With funding provided by Highmark, the pantry now opens its doors to staff from Penn State Hershey Medical Center and Penn State Extension once each month, offering flu shots, blood pressure screenings, nutrition education, information on exercise and more. “We’re here for more than just food, we’re a healing place,” said Sister Sue Ann. Joyce worked for 40 years, but now her social security doesn’t pay the bills. “This helps me stretch my food budget,” she said. “Sister Sue Ann treats everyone with respect and it’s a blessing to come here. A true blessing.”

Wells Fargo Supports Food Bank’s BackPack Program Wells Fargo recently made a donation of $15,000 in support of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s BackPack Program. The grant will be used to purchase kid-friendly, nutritious, individual serving size items that are rarely received from donors. The contribution by Wells Fargo will provide approximately 57,700 individual servings of nutritious food and will be a tremendous investment in the health and well-being of children in need in central PA. “The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s BackPack Program now serves more than 5,700 children in central PA and continues to grow,” said Joe Arthur, Food Bank executive director. “This donation will allow the Food Bank to continue providing healthy options for children at times when other resources are not available for them.” Pictured, Demetta Dumeng, Wells Fargo assistant vice president (left), and Roger Manalo, Wells Fargo regional banking district manager (right) present the check to Joe Arthur.

On November 19, San Giorgio presented the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank with a truckload of pasta worth $43,000 to help feed those in need during the holiday season. Honoring generations of family recipe traditions and bringing delicious pasta to the cities that have supported the brand over the last 100 years felt like a natural way to say thank you and celebrate this momentous anniversary.” “Pasta is one of the items most requested by individuals receiving food assistance,” said Joe Arthur, executive director, Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. “With the number of families facing hunger at record levels, this donation of high-quality pasta by San Giorgio will supply thousands of much-needed meals here in central PA.” Pictured, Food Bank Shipping & Receiving Supervisor, Mike Stubblebine unloads the truckload of pasta.
