In today’s competitive economic environment, whether you plan to work in business or run your own, business skills and knowledge are more important now than ever before. In addition, the computing industry plays an ever important part in all our lives, however, research carried out recently by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) indicated that only 17% of employers are ‘very satisfied’ with the IT skills of school leavers. This is why we offer a range of courses to help you prepare for the world of work, develop your existing career, or gain skills while working as an apprentice. Studying business and IT will give you the skills and knowledge to help move up the career ladder. You will gain practical skills and learn how to apply them. We are an enterprising college that is willing to think differently, embrace new models of learning, and operate in ways that will provide students with the skills necessary

to compete for jobs or create their own. Our new Enterprise and Employability centre helps to prepare students for the entrepreneurial world that awaits. Through their contact with businesses and employers students will develop good vocational skills alongside the ability to deal with risk, instability and the fluctuating work patterns that are fast becoming an inherent part of working life. Weymouth College’s lecturers all come from a professional business background, with specialisms including marketing, accountancy, HR and IT. They have excellent links with the business world, ensuring that students are able to gain up-to-date insight into the modern business environment.

Functional Skills

Everything in life involves business and business is a major part of everyone’s life.

While technical skills are needed for many roles, employers also want team-players, problem-solvers and good communicators.

You will study Functional Skills in addition to your subject area studies.

If you have an ambition to move up the ladder in a company, become an entrepreneur or start your own business, then a grounding in business is a must. Business generally covers the areas of marketing, finance, IT, operations, human resources and administration.

All IT jobs involve some level of technical content, from the technical skills of a software developer to project management roles where communicating with, and organising the people who do hold such technical knowledge, may be more important than actually having the technical skills. Business and interpersonal skills are becoming more important.

These are the skills that are commonly needed for success in a range of activities in education and training, work and life in general: • Maths • English • ICT Please visit our online course finder for the most up-to-date course details: www.weymouth.ac.uk
