EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

Movie Matinee Wednesday, October 1 at 2:30 p.m. Social Hall – $1 per person The Social Hall has been reserved for those who wish to see the movie What Happens in Vegas. Two strangers (Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher) find themselves hitched after a wild night of Las Vegas shenanigans in this 20th Century Fox comedy. Jack Fuller (Kutcher) is a single Manhattanite who can never quite commit to a permanent, longterm relationship and repeatedly hears from his lovers that he “isn’t serious boyfriend material.” Employed by his father (Treat Williams) at a local furniture business, Jack spends his workdays goofing off by watching sporting events behind dad’s back. Joy McNally (Diaz) is faring slightly better; a young, polished urbanite, she juggles a demanding job as a trader on the NYSE with a marital engagement to the impressive Mason (Jason Sudeikis), but has modified her entire life and all of her interests to please her intended. Coincident with Mr. Fuller’s decision to fire his son, Mason severs his engagement to Joy; as a result, both Jack and Joy hit the skids at around the same time and decide to cut their losses by heading out to Vegas. The two accidentally bump into one another when a computer mix-up at the hotel puts them in adjoining rooms; though they begin their acquaintanceship by bickering endlessly, they end up spending a long, drunken night on the town together, and when the sun rises and Joy comes to, she discovers that she unwittingly married Jack in the middle of the night. Alas, just when the two are about to call it quits by filing for divorce after the shortest marriage in history, Jack tosses a coin into a Vegas slot machine and hits a three-million-dollar jackpot — which naturally pits the newlyweds against one another in an attempt to claim the full share of the money. A conservative local judge, R.D. Whopper (Dennis Miller), then adds the final twist by refusing to grant a divorce until Joy and Jack have given married life a fair shake. In time, the marrieds may just discover that this union isn’t as far off the mark as they initially thought. Dennis Farina, Queen Latifah, and Zach Galifianakis round out the supporting cast.

Friday, October 24 at 7 p.m. Social Hall – $1 per person The Social Hall has been reserved for those who wish to see the movie Vantage Point. Forest Whitaker, Dennis Quaid, William Hurt, and Matthew Fox star in director Pete Travis’ Rashomonstyle thriller in which an assassination attempt on the President of the United States is detailed from five unique perspectives. As the President arrives in Salamanca, gunshots ring out. An American tourist (Whitaker) has captured footage of the would-be assassin on videotape, and now, as the stories of the other four witnesses unfold, each essential piece of the puzzle quickly falls into place. Only when all of the stories are told will the chilling truth to this shocking crime finally emerge.

Men’s Book Club Valencia Pointe offers something for everyone. Poker, Mah Jongg, arts & crafts, Girl Talk, Women’s Book Club and thats just to name a few. Now for the first time at Valencia Pointe, a non-fiction book club just for men. This club is chaired by two voracious readers and intellectually curious guys Ira Raff and Steve Tamber. We will explore the world around us using serious literature as our guide. Our first book will be “The Looming Tower: Al Qaeda and The Road to 9/11” written by Lawrence Wright. This 2006 book begins with the events of September 11, 2001. Those events were in many ways less the start of a tale than the end of one. It began many years before in many different precincts: the middle-class suburbs of Cairo, the mosques of Hamburg, Jidda, Islamabad and in the quiet university town of Greeley, Colo. In its simplest terms, this is the story of how a small group of men, with a frightening mix of delusion and calculation, rose from tormented civilization to mount a catastrophic assault on the world’s mightiest power, and how another group of men and women, convinced that such an attack was on the way, tried to desperately stop it. We will meet Wednesday, October 29 in the Classroom at 4 p.m. for our first discussion. Following the discussion, we will pick a book for the next meeting. All participants are welcome to suggest a book or books. The book to read will be decided by the members. The person offering the book will lead the next discussion. Contact Steve at [email protected] or Ira at [email protected].

Men’s Canasta Men’s Canasta will meet every Thursday at 7 p.m. in Card Room 1. We have the cards, trays, score sheets and pencils. Just bring yourself. New members are welcome. Please contact Alvin Freedman at 742-9393 or [email protected].

Greetings from your Total Health Systems Staff The THS class program has three levels of intensity that consist of: Level 1 – Beginner intensity workout, Level 2 – Intermediate intensity workout and Level 3 – Advanced intensity workout. Baby boomers are asking many questions relating to exercising, such as:

Q: How do I counteract the effects of aging? A: Start an exercise program. The science of aging indicates that chronic disease and disability are not inevitable. The choices you make today will impact you later.

Q: What are the common characteristics of aging? A: Decreased maximum heart rate, increased

blood pressure, increased use of medications, react slower to situations, progressive loss of bone mass, loss of muscle strength, declining flexibility, increased tendency towards dehydration, increased susceptibility to soreness and injury, and problems with falling and balance.

Q: What are the benefits of routine exercise?
