Pa’s Fiddle

fest

Music and Songs from the Writings of Laura Ingalls Wilder Pa’s Fiddle is an intimate evening of music and songs selected from the writings of Laura Ingalls Wilder, beloved author of the Little House on the Prairie books. This was the music that young Laura heard her Pa play on his fiddle, accompanying her family during their celebrated adventures on America’s vast prairies in the years just after the Civil War. Performances from Randy Travis, Rodney Atkins, Ronnie Milsap, Committed, Natalie Grant, Ashton Shepherd, and the Roys are accompanied by an all-star Nashville band led by Grammy-winner Randy Scruggs. In Wilder’s memory, the music was played by her Pa on his fiddle under the vast western sky, by the potbelly stoves of their many little houses, at church services and at Saturday night socials. It was played to entertain, to celebrate, and often to divert attention from bone-chilling cold, hunger, and deprivation. For Wilder and millions of others, music bound them together; Pa’s Fiddle is an echo from our collective past, celebrating our shared musical heritage. The songs in Pa’s Fiddle cross many genres: songs of our ancestors and families like “Soldier’s Joy” and “Devil’s Dream”; ballads and love songs like “Gum Tree Canoe” and “The Girl I Left Behind Me”; humorous songs such as “Buffalo Gals” and “Old Dan Tucker”; and songs of faith like “Rock of Ages” and “The Sweet

This dazzling production takes audiences on a thrilling rollercoaster ride of intrigue, obsession, and romance. In Love Never Dies, the audience is transported to New York’s playground, Coney Island. There, the masked phantom has been hiding amongst the freaks and side shows for 10 long years, yearning for his one true love and musical protégée, Christine Daaé. Lured by the bright lights and financial rewards of Coney, Christine and her family flee Manhattan to perform on stage for one last time, but Christine soon discovers the true identity of her mysterious impresario and that all is not what it seems. The performance features a 21-piece orchestra and an impressive cast of 36, including highly praised musical actors Ben Lewis as the Phantom and Anna O’Byrne as his Christine. Stuck in the Middle: Caring for Mom and Dad · · · · ·

A typical adult child will care-give his/her parents for 10-15 years. 2/3rds of adult caregivers are in the workforce. 85% of care for the elderly is performed by family members. 1/2 of adult children contribute to their parents’ financial support. Only 10% of caregivers feel the responsibility of care is equally split among family. · 43% of Americans over age 65 will spend time in a nursing home. From National Alliance for Caregiving “Caregivers in the US-2010,” MetLife, AARP, caringworkplace.org

One day most of us will have to face many hard issues regarding the care of our aging parents. For some, that day comes gradually. For others, it comes without a moment’s notice. In either case the big question is, “Are you ready?” Today there are more than 75 million people who are “stuck in the middle” of kids, career, and caring for elderly family members. The process is often arduous and extremely painful. Stuck in the Middle: Caring for Mom and Dad features Barbara McVicker,

The British Beat In February 1964, a young English rock’n’roll quartet called the Beatles arrived on U.S. shores, kicking off a musical explosion that took the country by storm—and reverberates to this day. PBS revisits the time when the nation’s airwaves grooved to the swinging sounds of London in The British Beat. Britain’s first lady of song, Petula Clark (above), hosts this all-star reunion of some of the best of the British Invasion. Duo Peter (Asher) and Gordon (Waller) reunite for the first time in nearly four decades to perform their hits “World Without Love” and “I Go to Pieces.” The program also includes numerous #1 Billboard hits, such as “To Sir With Love” by Lulu, “Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter” by Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits, and “Game of Love” by Wayne Fontana. The British Beat airs Saturday, June 2nd at 9:00 p.m. and Friday, June 8th at 8:30 p.m.

one of the nation’s leading authorities on eldercare. Through humor, tears, and inspiring care giving stories, Barbara gives hope to viewers during this ninety-minute special by providing them a lifeline. Most importantly, audiences will leave with the essential information and tools they will need to navigate care giving so they can move from crisis to planning. Stuck in the Middle: Caring for Mom and Dad can be seen Tuesday, June 5th at 7:00 p.m. When you are a caregiver, you have to think of yourself as the (chief executive) of a very small nursing home. Ed Slott defines the monumental fiscal problems facing Americans and provides a step-by-step solution to creating a plan of action. Judy Garland: By Myself Picture a late night, amid the craziness of the 1960s, and see a vulnerable, largely misunderstood woman in her 40s. She’s at home, or maybe on the road again. One thing is certain: she’s alone, speaking randomly into a tape recorder. “I’m just trying to get a few things down,” she says. “I’m all by myself, as usual. Don’t know if anybody is interested, but I am. I’m just trying to be heard.” The woman is Judy Garland, and heard she is, in American Masters “Judy Garland: By Myself,” the first film that drew on Garland’s own words to tell her story. Pulled largely from recordings she made in preparation for an autobiography she never finished, “By Myself” is in a unique position to reveal Garland as she saw herself. American Masters “Judy Garland: By Myself”airs Friday, June 22nd at 9:00 p.m.

Afghanist an: ghanistan: The Surg e Surge Afghanistan: The Surge attempts to shed light on why the Afghanistan war has been so frustrating and seemingly without progress. In the two-hour program, a platoon of skilled, motivated Marines are sent to a remote outpost to eliminate Taliban influence. The Taliban do not stand and fight, however. Instead, using simple IEDs, they cripple Marine mobility and keep the Marines hemmed into a narrow valley while the Taliban operates from its untouchable headquarters only eight miles from the Marine outpost. At a time when the Afghanistan war may well be a central part of the presidential election, Afghanistan: The Surge can be a part of that conversation. Afghanistan: The Surge will be broadcast Wednesday, June 20th at 7:00 p.m.

[I] NDEPENDENT LENS “Wham! Bam! Islam!”

Precious Knowledge

“Wham! Bam! Islam!” on Independent Lens follows one of the most intriguing recent stories to come out of the Middle East. In 2003, Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa—a Kuwaiti psychologist and graduate of Columbia Business A rendering of the official who School—had a unique idea: create banned THE 99 in Saudi Arabia a comic book series with roots in Islam and Islamic culture. Al-Mutawa came up with the concept of THE 99, a team of superheroes who each exemplify one of the 99 attributes of Allah and fight together against evil. He saw THE 99 as not only a smart business model, but as an idealistic social endeavor. Believing that “Muslim children need new heroes,” Al-Mutawa’s THE 99 would reinforce the traditional Islamic virtues of compassion, understanding, and tolerance, and provide a positive alternative to some of the extremist messages fed to young Muslims. He also hoped that THE 99 would help improve the image of Islam in the West. Despite facing a daunting task that had never been attempted (comics were relatively unknown in the Arab market except for a few Western imports), Al-Mutawa managed to raise $7 million in initial capital from 54 investors across four continents. He even lured a team of Marvel comic veterans to the creative team for THE 99. Engrossing and fast-paced, “Wham! Bam! Islam!” is a fascinating look at what happens when ideals, money, religion, and pop culture collide in the global marketplace. Wham! Bam! Islam!” on Independent Lens airs Wednesday, June 13th at 9:00 p.m.

“Precious Knowledge” on Independent Lens reports from the frontlines of one of the most contentious battles in public education in recent memory, the fight over Mexican American studies programs in Arizona public Immigrant rights rally, Phoenix schools. While 48 percent of Mexican American students currently drop out of high school, Tucson High’s Mexican American Studies Program has become a national model of educational success, with 93 percent of enrolled students, on average, graduating from high school, and 85 percent going on to attend college. When Arizona lawmakers pass a bill giving unilateral power to the State Superintendent to abolish ethnic studies classes, teachers, and student leaders fight to save the program. Lawmakers and politicians respond with a public relations campaign to discredit the students, claiming that a textbook used in the classes, Paulo Freire’s The Pedagogy of the Oppressed teaches victimization and sedition. Officials ask that the classroom’s Che Guevara posters be replaced with portraits of founding father Benjamin Franklin. The film interweaves interviews with students enrolled in the Mexican American Studies Program at Tucson High School with those of teachers, parents, school officials, and the lawmakers who wish to outlaw the classes. “Precious Knowledge” on Independent Lens will be broadcast Sunday, June 17th at 2:00 p.m.

The Wages of Spin: Dick Clark, American Bandstand and the Payola Scandals The Wages of Spin: Dick Clark, American Bandstand and the Payola Scandals is a fascinating and provocative account of the evolution of the Philadelphia music scene between 1952 and 1962. Pulling no punches, the documentary takes on the highly-controversial subject of the Payola scandals of the time period and one of the industry’s first true moguls–Dick Clark. The Wages of Spin combines extensive research into Clark’s business dealings with first hand accounts by those artists and managers who witnessed his empire-building from its inception. For the first time on film, various artists describe the deals they were forced to make by Clark’s machine and the consequences of his avarice. The program documents the businesses that Clark created to use “Bandstand” for personal wealth aggrandizement and his unscathed emergence from the Payola scandals. Chubby Checker, Connie Francis, Fabian, Frankie Avalon, Len Barry, Charlie Gracie, Mike Love and Bruce Johnson of The Beach Boys, and others are featured. The Wages of Spin: Dick Clark, American Bandstand and the Payola Scandals can be seen Friday, June 1st at 9:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 17th at 11:00 p.m.

Queen Victoria’s Empire At the time of Queen Victoria’s birth in 1819, England was an agrarian society. Within a few short decades, this small island nation would be transformed into an industrial superpower, with an empire spanning the globe. Queen Victoria’s Empire, a fourhour series, is both the story of this remarkable time and an engaging portrait of a queen who ruled over a fifth of the world’s population. It is the story of influential men who would shape a distinctively British imperialism: Gladstone, Disraeli, Livingstone, Rhodes, and Prince Albert, Victoria’s husband. Whether driven by profit, passion or noble deeds, these figures would fuel expansion unequaled in history, forever changing Britain and the lands it controlled. From former outposts of the Empire, including Africa and India, the series recounts the dramatic clash of personalities and cultures that would drive Victoria’s remarkable 64-year reign. Queen Victoria’s Empire airs Tuesday, June19th at 7:00 p.m. (Pts. 1 & 2) and Tuesday, June 26th at 7:00 p.m. (Pts. 3 & 4). 7

Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles: Theater of the Mind Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the most famous detective stories ever written. Published in 1901 and 1902, it originally appeared in nine monthly installments in The Strand magazine. Now the Karen Hastings Players present Philip Grecian’s radio adaptation of this classic tale. It’s radio you can see, complete with actors, music, and a crew of sound effects technicians, creating it all right before your eyes. As is the custom with these dramas, the actors play multiple roles and employ vintage microphones to simulate radio’s Golden Age. They portray radio performers of the 1940s, and so Holmes’ deerstalker cap and Inverness cloak, like Victorian London, are created through theater of the mind, in the imaginations of the listening audience. Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles: Theater of the Mind can be seen Sunday, June 17th at 9:30 p.m. 12:00 1:00 2:00 3:00 4:00 4:30 5:30 6:00 7:00

Both Dish Network and DirecTV Satellite services are now carrying KENW-TV in the Albuquerque-Santa Fe Designated Market Area (DMA). This DMA includes all counties in New Mexico except Roosevelt, Curry, Quay, Union, and Dona Ana. Both DirecTV and Dish Network are carrying the KENW-TV High Definitions Channel (HD 3-1) and the KENW-TV Standard Definition (SD 3-2). The Nielsen Company decides which counties go into the various DMAs. At the present time, there are 210 DMAs in the United States. In population size, the Albuquerque-Santa Fe DMA is the 45th largest in the U.S. because it takes in most of the State of New Mexico. Nielsen determines the counties in a DMA by which television stations the viewers in that county are watching. By Nielsen rules, DirecTV and Dish Network subscribers in Union, Quay, Curry, and Roosevelt counties will receive the Amarillo PBS station. In all other counties of New Mexico, except for Dona Ana, subscribers will receive PBS from KENW-TV (Portales) and KNME-TV (Albuquerque). Dona Ana is in the El Paso DMA, and those subscribers will receive PBS from KRWG-TV (Las Cruces) and KCOS-TV (El Paso).

We’ll do it for you. For a printed copy of the Catalog, send a check or money order (payable to KENW-TV) for $2.00 to: KENW Auction, 1500 S. Ave. K, #52, Portales, NM 88130.
