Headmaster’s Pen Fall 2016 At the beginning of every school year the goals for our Christian school include teaching our students to listen, how to ask good questions, and the process of forming good relationships in their lives. Each of these areas of instruction will impact a child’s ultimate success in school and are an intricate aspect of the educational process. The allimportant process of getting to know your child’s teacher or teachers, and forming a godly relationship with them is also paramount to each child’s success here at FCS and is a key ingredient in their overall development as a student. Educational research consistently confirms that a child’s success in school depends greatly on the cooperation between parents and teachers. As a parent it is very important to envision your relationship with the teacher as a partnership which will benefit the child. Any personal contact that you as a parent can have with a teacher is good for your child. The relationship with your child’s teacher may begin at an open house or at a conference, or maybe even a short conversation in the hallway, on the phone, or in a short text message. If a partnership between you and the teacher is in place, your child will see that those concerned are putting their best interests at heart, and will thrive in that environment. The more that teachers know about their students, the more effective they can be, so parents should let their teacher(s) know information about the child that the teacher can work

with the student on. It is also important for teachers and parents to work together in developing a child’s positive self-image. This can be another vital aspect of school success. When a child witnesses the most important people in his or her life working together to support their efforts, self-esteem is heightened. When you communicate with your child and with the teacher, you are sending a significant message. You are saying that they are deserving of your attention; you are demonstrating that you value their education. It is also very important for parents and teachers to emphasize for a child to do their best, not be the best. This is a healthy message to convey to a child in order to help create a positive self-image.

School is a place to learn and grow, but it is also a place be able to make mistakes. It should not be a frightening environment where a child is judged by their grades alone. Rather than compare our children to others, who may be doing “better,” parents and teachers should support his or her individual progress. So again communication is vital and if your child is having difficulty, begin by speaking with the teacher about ways you can motivate your child to get their work accomplished. Both parents and teachers are responsible to help the child build confidence in his or her own abilities.

Keys to godly relationships: (1) Forgiveness “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” Romans 12:18. (2) Boundaries “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Proverbs 4:23. (3) Commitment “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13. (4) Service “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.” Romans 12:10. (5) Perseverance “…we also rejoice in our sufferigs, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character, and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit…” Romans 5:3-5. (6) Joy “…may the God of hope fill you with joy and peace as you trust him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit...” Romans 15:13. (Continued on page 2)

In much the same way the ability to have a successful relationship with God is dependent on how well you know the Master teacher, Jesus Christ. A relationship with Jesus Christ begins by trusting

Jesus as your only hope for forgiveness of your sin and a home in heaven. While the teacherparent relationship is vital to the success of your child in school, a relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important relationship you will can have in your entire life. Your relationship to Christ is also important in guiding your child to his or her successful relationship with God in their own life. At the

beginning of this school year I urge you to make sure that you know your teachers in order to ensure the success of your children in school this year. But I would submit to you that knowing Jesus is the greatest thing you can do for yourself and your children. Dr. Andrews

2016 SUMMER IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS At FCS, every family contributes to the on-going improvements that are made each year on our campus during the summer. These improvements range from the interior of classrooms, offices, and common facilities to the exterior development and landscaping of our common areas on the campus. This past summer our staff was very busy and we were able to complete many projects throughout the short summer weeks. Many of the things that were accomplished can only be done in the summer when the buildings are not occupied and the number of people on campus is low. Once again this past summer each classroom was painted, carpets were deep cleaned, and minor repairs were made on all those things that needed attention. In addition, the following projects were accomplished:

• On the West Campus, the main hallway was completely enclosed and the sidewalk was refurbished. The floors in the modular classrooms were completely replaced and re-carpeted, and walls repaired and painted.



• In the Media Center a media production studio was installed for our new media classes and for our enhanced media capabilities. The media center main room received new carpet and an additional classroom was added.





• The restrooms in the Martin building were completely renovated. • The beautification project of our campus also continued during the summer months with additional landscaping throughout the campus. Also during the summer months the athletic fields are refurbished getting ready for the non-stop use during the school year.

This summer two of our classrooms were designated as the prototype for all of our future classrooms. These new classrooms feature new flooring, individual chairs and desks designed to enhance collaborative learning options, new color and accents, and LED lighting. This is a work in progress. We thank our families for their commitment to FCS and all of those on our maintenance staff who worked hard all summer to make this a summer of significant improvements. 2

SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEK Submitted by Mr. Tito Hernandez, Chaplain

At the start of each school year, students and faculty have the opportunity to engage God during spiritual emphasis week. A different guest speaker will come and share challenging messages with the aim of encouraging students to pursue a deeper relationship with God. This year, the Patriot Nation welcomed back Ken Freeman as the featured speaker for the week. Coming all the way from San Antonio, Texas, Ken Freeman has been ministering to students at FCS during spiritual emphasis weeks for over twenty years. He spends much of his time traveling the country doing what he loves the most: sharing his story with students and leading them to Christ. Despite living a life full of abuse and neglect, God turned Ken’s muddled life into a powerful message. As a result, Ken’s ministry and story has had a lasting impact on countless Patriot alumni, and God has used him mightily to make a lasting impact for His kingdom. This year was no different. Ken challenged students and faculty alike to pursue a deeper relationship with

God while removing sin and distractions from our daily routine. He spoke of several ideas and themes throughout the week, including the three things we need to guard: our eyes, heart and mind. At the end of the week, Ken gave each student and faculty member a unique key to carry as a reminder of the key things they learned and to pursue a life of godliness. Students were also led in worship by a team from Calvary Chapel Miami, headed by our very own Mrs. Amanda Vazquez, assistant choral director. As the week came to a close, countless students came forward to make commitments of faith to God. As tears streamed down many of their faces, Ken led them in a prayer and encouraged them to help one another along this journey of faith. Relationships were restored, lives were renewed, and students left with a committed desire to glorify God like never before. Please continue to pray for all of those who trusted Christ, and continue to pray that the student body would be able to stand firm in their convictions and commitments to Jesus Christ.

NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY The National Junior Honor Society welcomed its new inductees on September 22, 2016. The event began with a welcome breakfast and concluded with a chapel service honoring each inductee and returning member. Students are inducted into the NJHS each year upon recommendation from Mrs. Wicks - Middle School Principal, Mrs. Gladys Quinlan - NJHS Sponsor and faculty members. The students must maintain a 3.75 GPA in their core classes and qualify with an 80% or higher SAT score. CHOIR NEWS The FCS Choir Department is proud to announce that 6th grader Charlie Stemmer, auditioned for and was selected to be in the Florida American Choral Directors Association Male Honor Choir. The choir, made up of students from many Florida schools, performed at the annual ACDA Conference held at Seminole State College in Sanford, Florida. “Do The Right Thing” Program Nominees Florida Christian School, through the Guidance and Counseling Department, has proudly partnered with, Do The Right Thing. This program has been sponsored by the City of Miami Police Department for the last 25 years, under the direction of Executive Director, Jodi Portante Atkins, a graduate of Florida Christian School. Each month, over 700 children from Miami-Dade County are nominated by their teachers, counselors, parents, police officers, and the general public in order to recognize and reward students for their exemplary behavior, accomplishments, good deeds and attitude. These are students who make a

Always greets everyone with a big smile and tries to help in any way he can. He holds the door, carries books, and performs other thoughtful tasks. Melanie Izquierdo (6th grade) Melanie is a great student. I have Melanie during the last hour of the day. She is a creative student who loves to perfect her artwork. September 11th is a special day in our country and we commemorate this day with special chapel services and assemblies. We are careful to relate the terrorist attack events that took place in 2001at the World Trade Center and other sites, but always thanking God for His protection and sovereignty. Our school has named this day “American Christian Heritage Day” and this year it was observed on Friday, Sept. 9th. The west campus students sing patriotic songs and talk about the Christian roots of America. We aim to instill and preserve the spirit of patriotism that Americans felt on 9/11/2001. America was founded under God and His principles and we at FCS will continue to carry on the Christian principles that made America great. God Bless America!

ELEMENTARY MISSIONS CHAPEL SERVICE The importance of missions was reinforced during a special chapel service, organized by Miss Deborah Warner, FCS Elementary Chaplain. A representative from Operation Christmas Child spoke to the students about the impact a shoebox filled with gifts has on a child. What a blessing to reach others for Christ!

Each Fall, the 3K - 2nd Grade students participate in the Harvest Festival, a fun performance celebrating harvest time. Miss Warner and Mrs. Tejedor, FCS Music teachers, taught the students songs and dances typical of our nation’s past. Happy Fall, Ya’ll!

PTCF EVENT Mr. George Gulla, Dean of Students and Director of Security, was the special speaker at the well-attended PTCF event held in October. Parents appreciated the information Mr. Gulla shared regarding security at FCS. Mr. Gulla is a retired City of Miami police officer with 27 years of experience.
