Urbanization is mostly along the major rivers

Urbanization and Climate Change Urbanization is mostly along the Major Rivers City Development Committees Nay Pyi Taw Yangon Mandalay Riverine Floods and Flash Floods effects urban areas Flood protection measures Embankments along the both sides Construction sluice gates Improvement of drainage facilities Monsoon rain and floods 2R is the main water resources, 2R are under the influence of monsoon winds. Due to the climate change projection, an increase in the occurrence and intensity of extreme weather events including floods.

Improvement of drainage facilities City Development Activities for Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon & Mandalay River Training Bank Protection Channel Improvement Project for Master Plan of Ayeyarwady river in Myanmar To prevent from the flood of the Ayeyarwady river ( one objective of the project) With the assistance of the Government of the Republic of the Korea. 3 years project with US$ 4.2 million dollars estimated cost.

Myanmar Action Plan on Disaster Risk Reduction (MAPDRR) (2012) Seven Sector 65 Projects ( including Flood Management and capacity building ) To Implement the Projects Leading Agencies Supporting Agencies Potential partners (UNDL , UNEP, INGOS, NGOS, UNESCAP, MRC Community engagement is depending upon the management of States and regions level Township Levels Department of Relief and Resettlement is the key player for community engagement especially for state / region/ township Levels.

(1)The project for the strategic Urban Development Plan of the Greater Yangon (JICA cooperation programme, Interium Report) (2)Grand work shop on 18 Feb 2013 . The Study on Improvement of Sewerage and Drainage System in Yangon.

Mandalay City Development Committee

(1)Proposed improvement plan for flood protection, drainage and sewerage system for Mandalay City ( CCH – Karnchage public Co,Ltd of Minn Group of Companies) (2)Conducting Feasibility Study to develop master plan for Mandalay City flood Protection. (Signed MOU on & January 2013 with ICYY Myanmar cooperate Co.Ltd )

Challenges Keeping Particular interests on urban flood management. (Even City development Committees consider flood management together with their drainage systems operating and improving)

Institutional weakness of drainage system. To enact the Town planning law/ important law/ under preparation has not yet been enacted. Funding , Technology & HR

Strategies' to overcome challenges Improvement of/ flood warning system. Conducting capacity building programme and community awareness Campaign for unban flood management. To prepare urban flood management programme in advance for township and national levels. To seek fund and allocate budget for implementation works for unban flood management including capacity enhancement Develop the legal and policy framework for unban flood management in parallel with the formulation of town plan.

Conclusion Urban flood management is a specific part of IWRM . Presentation is based on my experience gained during 30 years Government Services Execution of Myanmar IWRM , including flood management ,working level Professionals of line agencies cooperate and coordinate among and each others.

Can I floor clear presentation for the audience .Not We are trying our best under the several governance.

We have different situations to compare with other countries including Asean Countries . Now, we have new constitution, Government and policy and har workingship of Government . At this moment , the most important issue for urban flood management is to keep keen focus with priority action for this particular area.
