NEWS NUBAR 2011 n1 Sessio Saturday July 16,, 2011

First Session: Start with a Bang! Camp Nubar started strong with First Session paving the way for another awesome and fun summer. The session started out with lipsync, where cabin bonds began to form and people from Montreal to Yerevan began to make new friendships. The first week soared by with fun, including events such as the Roommate Game and Carnival. Tribal Wars was especially fun, with the black team being victorious in defeating the red team. Reverend Father Taniel Karadjian also celebrated Badarak on Sunday, with help from campers and counselors serving as deacons, acolytes, and choir. Campers had a blast at the dance on the first Friday, with the theme “When I grow Up”. Campers dressed up in costumes pretending to be whatever they want to be when they grow up. On Saturday, the younger campers had a cookout with hot dogs and smores, as the older campers were captivated by guest speaker Alex Webb’s stunning video on the Armenian Genocide. In the end, all the campers enjoyed either relaxing by the fire, or learning more about Armenian history. On Sunday, campers hiked around the lake, and that night there was an Armenian night with dancing and even boreg. The second week of camp was filled with fun evening activities for everyone to enjoy. The Hill dominated the Battle of the Sexes, campers chased and captured their counselors in Counselor Hunt all around camp, and the older campers had a blast at Camp Out. At the Camp out, campers got to sleep outside all night, and enjoy themselves with food and skits! With all this fun, how could anyone ever want to leave? See everyone next year!

First Session: Start with a Bang!

Tribal Duels On a seemingly ordinary night, a fire drill was mysteriously called, and a random box sat in the middle of the basketball court. To everyone‟s surprise, Audrey jumped out of it, breaking Tribal Duels. The camp was suddenly split into 2 teams for the night: black and red. Each team charged to the gym, where the completion truly began. With games like musical chairs and shoe toss, the teams fought to the final relay. The final relay had events such as wrapping people like mummies and the classic hoolahoop relay. In the end, the black team came out victorious, but with both teams enjoying a fun and very competitive evening. - Karl Afrikian (B3 JC)

Battle of the Sexes This favorite, competitive event at Camp Nubar returned First Session, with both the Hill and the Valley putting in their all for a chance at camp glory. With each age group participating in a certain event, such as balloon races and blowing paper across a table, the Hill and Valley went into the final relay with the Hill having a 21 second lead. In the end, the Hill, once again, won its 10th BOTS, taking bragging rights once again for the rest of the year. - Karl Afrikian( B3 JC)

The Dance The first dance was a great way to start the summer! The theme, “When I Grow Up,” brought teachers, doctors, lawyers, sport players, wrestlers, and even some nuns! Everyone was dancing to some new, popular hits, along with some of the old classics. Everyone joined in both traditional and modern Armenian dancing. Everyone is looking forward to the other dances this summer and it may be tough to top the fun that everyone had at this one. -Becky Dukmejian ( G3 CIT)

Camp fashion may seem completely useless to many of the guys on the Hill, but to each Valley Girl, we know how vital it is to dress well. Outside of the Camp Nubar bubble, girls attempt to dress like Hippies often with mixes of urban and retro style. At camp, being 45 minutes from THE Woodstock, the girls here look almost straight from the 60‟s. Whether wearing tie-dye shirts or jean shorts, both campers and counselors often rock the whole hippie style. Yet, the Valley often wears its most common style: Hanes v-neck and sweats. The classic Camp Nubar sweatpants and sweatshirt are loved by many campers and counselors alike. At flagpole, it is not uncommon to see many people wearing either the Camp sweatpants or sweatshirts (or both!). So exactly why do campers spend so much time trying to look their best? At Camp Nubar, everybody focuses on the friendship aspect of everything, and for girls, fashion is a huge bonding event. Let everyone here know that you should leave all of your designer brands at home, and just smile. You‟re at camp. We love you for who you are!

An Interview with Jen Omartian

By Brenda Yaz (CIT G1) Brenda: “So how long have you been coming to camp, and did you ever expect to be director?” Jen: “ This is my 19th year here. If you asked me in 1993, I would probably say, „No!‟ It‟s just too easy to come back year after year.” Brenda: “What is the best part of director.” Jen: “I love interacting with everyone here and knowing all the campers on a personal level.” Brenda: “If you could be a counselor again for a day, what activity and cabin would you choose?” Jen: “Waterfront and G4.” An Interview with Baba Dan Antreasyan By Aris Mardirosian (CIT B3)

Aris: “What is your favorite camp memory from this year so far?” Baba Dan: “ The Hill winning Battle of the Sexes for the 10th time” Aris: “ What is your favorite part of your job?” Baba Dan: “ I love witnessing campers having a great time and seeing how counselors mature into real leaders as they get older.” Aris: “Where is your favorite place in Camp Nubar?” Baba Dan: “ The Dining Hall when the Hill and Valley are singing against each other.”
