THE TIME OF GATHERING Welcome and Life Together

REV. CRAIG GOODRICH

SERVICE OF PREPARATION *Call to Worship and Lighting of the Advent Candle Leader: Watch and wait for Christ’s coming. Light candles of hope, peace, joy and love, remembering the promises of God. Acolyte: We light this candle in hope. Hear God’s promise of hope from the prophet Isaiah. “Comfort, comfort my people says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. A voice of one crying in the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” Leader: Faithful God, out of death you bring life. People: Renew us in hope that we may be alert to Christ’s advent among us. Leader: God of promise, God of hope, People: Into our darkness come. All: Let us worship God . A TIME FOR PRAISE AND CONFESSION * Hymn of Praise #133

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (vs. 1,3,5)

VENI EMMANUEL

1. O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel, that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear. Refrain: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel! 3. O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer our spirits by thine advent here; and drive away the shades of night, and pierce the clouds and bring us light! Refrain. 5. O come, Desire of nations, bind all peoples in one heart and mind; bid envy, strife and quarrels cease; fill all the world with heaven’s peace. Refrain. Call to Confession

ANN GOODNIGHT

Prayer of Confession Faithful and Loving God, we confess that we do not walk in your light. We hurt and destroy one another and neglect the poor and hungry. We let evil grow among us and fail to bear good fruit. Forgive us, God of grace. Awaken us to your Word, so that we may be ready to welcome you with joy and serve you with gladness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. A Moment for Silent Personal Confession

Congregational Response All: O Holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; cast out our sin, and enter in; be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us, abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel. Declaration of Pardon Leader: Hear the good news! In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Receive God’s forgiveness and be at peace. All: Thanks be to God! *Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen! Amen! Romans 13:11-14

PEW BIBLE PAGE 923

Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12 the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13 let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy.14 Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Choral Response

He Became Poor

JOHN BELL

He became poor that we may be rich, loving the world and leaving his throne; King of all kings and Lord of all lords, flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone.

Second Reading

Matthew 24:36-44

PEW BIBLE PAGE 806

“But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39 and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. 41 Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. 42 Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43 But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.

Leader: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Sermon

Wake Up to Hope

REV. CRAIG GOODRICH

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH *Apostles Creed I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. RESPONSE TO THE WORD Prayer of Thanksgiving and The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

ARR.

GUSTAV HOLST

Let all mortal flesh keep silence, and with fear and trembling stand; Ponder nothing earthly minded for with blessing in his hand, Christ our Lord to earth descendeth, our full homage to demand. King of Kings, yet born of Mary, as of old on earth He stood, Lord of Lords, in human vesture in the Body and the Blood he will give to all the faithful His own Self for heavenly food. Rank on rank the host of heaven spreads its vanguard on the way as the light of light descendeth from the realms of endless day that the powers of hell may vanish as the darkness clears away. At His feet the six-winged seraph; Cherubim with sleepless eye, veil their faces to the Presence, as with ceaseless voice they cry, Alleluya Lord most High. Amen.

* The Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him all creatures here below; Praise him above ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Prayer of Dedication GOING FORTH *Hymn of Commitment #135
