FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH

Welcome in the name  of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

   

Bibles (blue cover) and hymnbooks (brown cover) are provided for your use. A nursery is available in the lower hall for infants and toddlers. Washrooms are also located in the lower hall. If you wish to have a cushion or hard of hearing headset, please speak to one of the ushers who will be happy to obtain these items for you.  We invite you to complete one of the blue Visitor Cards in the pew rack and place it in the offering plate toward the end of the worship service. This will help us get to know you better!  Please silence cell phones and other electronics. Speak softly, move slowly and allow each one present to listen for God’s voice.  Many people have allergies to fragrances and perfumes, so we try to keep our church a scent-free zone in consideration of the health and wellbeing of others! Thank you!

Should you wish to have someone pray with or for you, today’s Deacon-onDuty will be pleased to meet with you following the worship service. Please come to the front, west side pew. Perhaps this prayer may help you begin your preparation today: Almighty God, our Father. You have made us, given us purpose and designed us that we should have fellowship with You. Grant us that intimacy this morning in our worship and draw us closer to You by Your Spirit. We pray in the name of Your Son, Jesus the Messiah. Amen!

CONFESSION OF SIN Call to Confession

Kaitlin Eley

Responsive Prayer of Confession Leader:

O God, Creator and Provider: You have made this wonderful world and filled it with good things. Yet many people go hungry. Forgive us God,

All:

And teach us how to share. 2

Leader:

We say nothing when our government reduces foreign aid, or negotiates treaties which make it hard for poor nations to feed themselves. Sometimes we say it is too much trouble for us to learn what is going on. Forgive us God,

All:

And give us voices to speak out.

Leader:

Sometimes we have blamed the hungry for being so, saying, “They are just lazy.” Forgive us God,

All:

And make us more compassionate.

Leader:

Sometimes we waste food by throwing it away or we eat far too much. Forgive us God,

All:

And teach us how to share.

Leader:

Sometimes we eat food that is not good for us, that damages our bodies which belong to You. Forgive us God,

All:

And teach us how to be responsible.

Leader:

Sometimes we complain too much and are not at all grateful for what You have given us. Forgive us God,

All:

And teach us how to be thankful.

Leader:

For all our failures to share, our waste, our ingratitude, our blaming others and our failures to speak, grant us genuine repentance, forgive us and change us into what we should be.

ALL:

This we ask in the strong name of Jesus.

Mission Commission Update “She Matters” Advocacy Campaign "My name is Lina. I am 15 years old and live in a small village of 50 people. We do not have a school so I work in the fields and take care of the goats. But I am happy that I can now go to literacy classes at night. I love to write words and practise using Bible verses. I think it’s important for girls to learn. I want to be able to read and understand the Bible." First Baptist's Mission Commission appreciates your support for Canadian Baptist Ministries "She Matters" annual advocacy campaign. As a church, you contributed $4,281 to educate girls who otherwise would be prevented from attending school. Your gifts helped CBM exceed this year's $100,000 goal by $80,000. "She Matters" is now in its second year. You can make donations directly through the project website (www.shematters.cbmin.org) or by calling the CBM Office at 1-905-821-3533. 6

Deacon Pairing: As part of an ongoing effort to improve communications, deepen our sense of belonging and respond to suggestions from the congregation, we are in the process of “pairing” a deacon with each person or household in the congregation. At some point before November 1st, you will be contacted by a deacon so you know with whom you have been “paired”. Of course you are welcome and encouraged to speak to ANY deacon if you have new ideas, concerns or questions, but we hope that by pairing everyone with a specific deacon, you will have a deacon with whom to connect in particular. If you haven’t been contacted by November 1st, PLEASE PLEASE let either Dr. McKim or the Chair of Deacons know. There are a MULTITUDE of reasons you may not have been contacted: you aren’t listed in the church directory, you have changed address or phone number and haven’t updated the office yet, you are in a highly confidential situation and prefer to be in contact only with a pastor, or, quite simply because we are fallible human beings who may accidentally miss a name or a line of type or may be having one of those days when our brains miss a beat..or two. ~Your Diaconate~ CGIT is 100!!!! Come and celebrate with us on Sunday, October 25, 2015. Join us for a Come and Go Continental Breakfast at Whitmore Park United Church, 336 Durham Dr., Regina. We will be starting bright and early at 9 a.m. so that you may join us for food and fellowship, and then if you must leave us, you will be able to make it to your home church for worship. You are more than welcome to stay and worship with us at 10:30 a.m. as well!! If you wish, bring your favourite, muffins, bagels, etc. with you to share. 10

VOICE Voice will be meeting on Wednesday the 14th at 7:00 p.m. at Martha’s. We will be discussing the 3rd chapter of Philip Yancey’s new book “Vanishing Grace: Whatever Happened to the Good News?” If you missed the first sessions, don’t worry, you can join at any time. Voice is a women’s literature group which meets every two weeks on Wednesday evening to discuss a book related to our spiritual journey. And more than that, we are a support system for each other, sharing our blessings and challenges, and seeking a better understanding of God in our daily lives. If you are interested in oining Voice or just want more information please talk to Laureen Snook 306-757-8403 or Martha Pauls 306-586-7015. VOICE NOVEL STUDY

The next novel study will be Saturday, October 24th at 190 a.m. at Martha’s! We will be reading “The Street Sweeper” by Elliot Perlman.

Lamont Williams is a black man from the Bronx trying to return to a normal life after serving a six-year prison term for a crime for which he was wrongly convicted. Historian Adam Zignelik is an untenured Columbia professor whose career and long-term relationship are falling apart. When Lamont Williams strikes up an unlikely friendship with a patient at the hospital where he works as a janitor, he learns about the gas chambers and crematoria of the Nazi extermination camps. Meanwhile, Adam pursues a promising research topic suggested by a World War II veteran, a topic that might just save him professionally and even personally. When the lives of these two men intersect, history comes to life in ways neither of them could have forseen. We will meet right after Thanksgiving. Date to be confirmed. The novel study is open to all women who love to read, but can’t commit to a bi-weekly study. It is a chance to get together to enjoy the thoughts and perspectives of others on the chosen book. If you are interested in adding your name to our email list please let Laureen know 306-757-8403. 11

MESSAGE FROM CBM - ALWAYS WITH US

“The poor are always with you… but you will not always have me”. (Mark 14:7) We all know this verse from the story where Mary pours costly oil over Jesus, much to the dismay of the disciples. They would rather see money be used for the poor than for such an extravagance. Sometimes we are tempted to stop halfway through the verse, focusing on the reality that in our broken and fallen world, poverty is a chronic, unsolvable problem. Taken out of context, Jesus’ words might seem to be telling us to despair. Since we will never end povery, why try to make it better. It is tempting to generalize the unique circumstances of the story, in which Mary is actually preparing Jesus for His death and burial, to mean we should focus our lives and actions solely on the hope we have in Jesus for Eternal life instead of working to bring God’s Kingdom to earth. But we shouldn’t miss the middle of the verse: “The poor are always with you and you can do good to them whenever you wish but you will not always have me.” Jesus’ words here echo Deuteronomy 15:11 “For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.’” Because there is poverty we must be loving and generous. Jesus is offering us a never-ending opportunity to act with compassion. His tone suggests that love is something we should desire, not just something we do because God commands us. The Holy Spirit changes our hearts so we become more like Jesus in our hearts and our actions. In Canada today, there are 150,000 people who are homeless; 35,000 of these sare considered chronically homeless. 1 in 7 Canadians – 4.8 million people live in poverty. At least 1 in 5 single moms raise their children in poverty. 1 in 5 households has difficulty affording housing. *Globally, 1 billion people live on less than $1 per day and are housed in filthy slums where they lack privacy, stability and sanitiation. Another 1.3 billion peopple have no accesss to electricity.* In the face of such overwhelming and chronic need, how can Christians respond? How can one person or a small group make a difference in such a big problem? As with a mustard seed, we can start small, one person at a time, acting with love to meet immediate needs and in justice to change the underlying causes of poverty. As Mother Theresa said, “If you can’t feed one hundred people, feed just one.” 12

WHAT YOU CAN DO PRAY regulary for those who experience poverty or homelessness and for the people who serve them. ASK God to open your heart and guide your church to respond practically to poverty and homelessness, both locally and globally. RESPECT poeople who experience poverty and homelessness, treating them with dignity and courtesy. GIVE financial gifts, food, bus passes, clothing and toiletries to nonprofits that serve those who are in need. HIRE people who face poverty to do work around your home so they can earn a living with dignity. WELCOME people living poverty and who are homeless into your church and home. VOLUNTEER your time and professional talents to nonprofits that serve people who are living in povery or who are homeless. DONATE to organizations that alleviate the causes and symptoms of global poverty. SUPPORT housing first strategies that begin with finding permanent housing and then walk courageously through challenges like mental health, addictions and many other barriers. ADVOCATE on behalf of the poor in your community. VOTE for political parties that will do the most to end poverty and encourage shared prosperity.

FBC ALLEVIATES POVERTY IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS: 1). Through funds from the Missions Commission sent to our national organization, CBM, works to alleviate poverty in developing countries. 2). Through our benevolent fund we give support to the Regina and District Food Bank. 3). We also make available the opportunity for folk to contribute to the Food Bank barrel in the east foyer.
