Office staff will make emergency phone calls from school office, unless they are unavailable (e.g. before 8.30am), hence an appropriate adult will make the call. Dealing with Emergencies In an emergency, casualties will not be moved (unless absolutely necessary), a person trained in First-Aid will attend to the casualty and an ambulance will be called for, without delay. If appropriate, the casualty will be transported to the First-Aid room, to await the arrival of the ambulance. In the case of a child casualty, parent(s)/guardian(s) will be contacted and advised to come to the school or go straight to the hospital, as appropriate. If a parent is not available, at least one member of staff will accompany the child to the hospital. If a child needs hospital treatment in a non-urgent situation, the parent will be contacted to accompany the child to hospital. If the parent cannot be contacted, then a member of staff will drive the child to hospital. The child will be strapped

into the back seat, using an appropriate child restraint, if required, and another member of staff will also accompany the child. Every attempt to contact the parents will be made by the school. All head injuries, injuries requiring First-Aid and significant incidents, will be recorded in the official Accident/Incident book, which is located in the office. This is completed by the child’s first contact (i.e. teacher, assistant, lunchtime supervisor). Class teachers also make a brief note (in their diary) of any incidents/injuries sustained by any members of their class. Minor accidents/incidents Almost all minor injuries/conditions (e.g. graze, cut, nosebleed, mild asthma attack, bruise, sore leg, etc) are dealt with in situ, by an appropriate adult (e.g. teacher, classroom/supervisory assistant) or by the child themselves (if appropriate). If the class teacher is not present, they will always be informed, as soon as is practical. ‘Minor Injuries/Ailments Notes’ are available for class teachers (Master copies kept in the staff room and school office) to send home, to notify parents/ guardians, after-school clubs, childminders, etc. that a child has sustained a minor injury or ailment during the school day. These never replace the need to complete the official Accident/Incident book but are useful if a child has, for example, grazed their knee or had complained of a sore tummy/mild headache, during the school day. They could also be used for minor bumps (e.g. if you witnessed a child bump their cheek on a chair and they had a slight mark but no swelling). Head injuries/Significant injuries If a child has a head injury or significant injury this must be reported to parents/guardians as soon as possible. Therefore the child’s first contact needs to inform the child's class teacher, who will contact parents using the normal emergency parent contact procedures (i.e. contact the office who will phone parents). In severe cases, parents are encouraged to collect their child from school. All accident/incidents are recorded in the ‘Accident Book’ (in office) by the first staff member on the scene. Major accidents/incidents If a major accident/incidence occurs, in conjunction with relevant assistance, parents of any children involved and the Principal are informed immediately. More serious accidents are recorded in the First-Aid Record book. Children with Special Medical Conditions A regularly updated photographic Medical Register, listing details of children with specific medical conditions (e.g. Epilepsy, Anaphylactic Allergies, Diabetes) and specific treatments, is supplied to all Key Stage Leaders and

First-Aid personnel. A master copy is available in Central Resources and a paper copy is kept in the school office, with details of Medical Action Plans. In the event of a Medical Emergency, a child’s Individual Action Plan should be followed, and First-Aid assistance should be requested, if necessary. Administration of Medicines Refer to the school’s ‘Administration of Medication’ agreed procedure document. Hygiene Control Guidelines In accordance with Department of Health Guidelines the following rules will apply: • Non-latex gloves are worn when dealing with incidents. • Wounds are cleaned with water and the wound dressed (if necessary) with an appropriate sterile dressing, to prevent infection. • Implements which could become contaminated with blood, must not be shared • Open cuts or weeping skin lesions/abrasions are covered with a suitable dressing. • Splashes of blood on the skin are washed off immediately with soap and water. • Splashes of blood or bodily fluid, into the eyes or mouth are washed out immediately with copious amounts of water. • If staff giving First-Aid, have cuts and abrasions, these will be covered with suitable dressings. • After accidents resulting in bleeding, all contaminated surfaces, e.g. tables, furniture or floor are disinfected. • Bloods/soiled dressings and used gloves are disposed of in the sanitary bins in the staff toilet or in the pedal bin in the First-Aid room. Educational visits and Off-Site Activities Classes leaving the school premises bring a First-Aid Trip Kit, including an ‘instant ice-pack’ and a sick bucket/bag containing essential cleaning aids. A person trained in First-Aid will accompany the children on the visit. Parent information Information including, opt out consent notification, is sent to parents with regard to school policies and procedures (e.g. usage of ice-packs/cold-packs and usage of sticking plasters (which are kept in teacher’s drawer/cupboard as ‘medicine’). Copies of this policy are available from the school office or on the school’s website (www.loughviewintegrated.co.uk).
