Fresh vegetables are naturally key ingredients in the kitchen. With a little of your homemade creativity and by selecting some of our exotic choices, from our large choice of fruit and vegetables, they make everyday meals just as magical as special occasions. To take advantage of our freshness, don’t buy on low price alone. It doesn’t pay to buy more vegetables than you can properly store in your refrigerator or use without waste. Vegetables are usually at their best quality and price at the peak of the season. We buy our fruit and vegetables daily from a Yorkshire supplier so you can be sure that we have you our customer at the heart of everything we offer. If there is something you particularly like for that

special occasion, please ask us and we will do our best to supply what you want. Savoy Cabbage Dark green winter cabbage with attractive, crinkled leaves has a robust texture and flavour, and is exceptionally good to use in cooked dishes. Choose dark green cabbages that feel solid and heavy for their size, and have firmly layered crisp, curling leaves. They are at their best from October to February. To store, keep in a cool dark place for up to one week. Try a hearty warming peasant soup by cutting Savoy into wedges with the hard core discarded. Steam, boil or braise for best effect, or simply stuff rolled up whole leaves with a savoury minced meat and rice.

FOCUS ON Since 1924, when we first began to satisfy customers in Leeds Kirgate Market, C. Scruton and Sons Ltd. has become one of the most respected companies in the region's fresh produce business, supplying wholesale fruit and vegetables to the Yorkshire region.

With over a third of suppliers being local reliable artisans and small companies, Campbell’s will look further afield if it is in the customer’s interest. For centuries people in the region have enjoyed a tradition of sharing relaxed meals, making each a celebration. We love food as much as we love life itself. If something doesn't look, taste and smell divine, and feel great in your mouth, then we just won't make it. It's as simple as that.

CHEESE 07

Fresh in store is the finest range of continental artisan cheeses both soft and hard mainly made from goats, cows and ewes milk, and sourced from France, Italy and Spain. They nestle nicely alongside the vast choice of English cheeses from Wensleydale Creamery, Swaledale Cheese and not forgetting Yorkshire Cheeses including Mrs Bell’s Blue. We now have over 100 varieties of English and Continental cheese to choose from. Just a brief encounter allows you to check out cheese texture, taste and strength of flavour, and with a little more help, even the stage of maturity. Cheese is eaten traditionally in this country at the end of a meal but there are at least two delicious cheeses that make excellent first courses just as they would

in their country of origin: Mozzarella fresca – a soft white cheese – originally made from buffalo milk but more often now cow’s milk. The second is Feta, which is a crumbly, creamy-tasting cheese and is the basis for a Greek salad. Select up to four choices for your cheese board for best effect: A hard sheep’s cheese, a soft goat’s cheese, a hard cow’s cheese and not forgetting a blue cheese. Complement that with balls of dried figs, medjool dates, fresh crisp apple or Spanish dried moscatel grapes. We also offer a wide range of accompaniments including biscuits, pickles and spreads from the Fine Cheese Co.

FOCUS ON At the Wensleydale Creamery we pride ourselves on the quality and authenticity of our products. We are dedicated to ensuring all of our cheeses are made using traditional recipes that have been handed down through the generations. Skill and art is applied to all our products through the handcrafting process and all our cheeses are matured naturally to give the perfect flavour balance.

CAMPBELLS OF LEYBURN winner of the Specialist Retailer of the Year category

Did You Know? Doug and Kath Campbell are the fifth generation of the family to run the store. Starting out from two rooms of a house in 1868, the company offers the same services it always has for the people of Wensleydale, Coverdale and Swaledale. A large part of the service in those early days was to supply local farmers with shotgun cartridge requirements. The advent of a new local specialist gun shop meant that Campbell’s could concentrate on its main focus – the grocery market, where the technology of the Internet has meant that it is known across the country for the excellent products in-store. In the last few years Campbell’s has been recommended for many awards, being a finalist for the National Retail Awards, the nation’s industry Oscars. Against many major UK brands, Campbell’s was successful in being named a runner up in the small supermarket over 3,000 sq feet in 2010 and was the only small owner managed supermarket to come that far. Other accolades were runner up in the Countryside Alliance Awards and Dales Awards in the Entrepreneur of the Year Category.
