From A & J Speelman Collection A & J Speelman established an oriental art gallery in London in 1976, that has been a family owned antique business for three decades. They are specialists in this field, focusing on Asian Art that is eclectic and diverse, but concentrating on rarity and quality. It was a delight to meet Mr. Jules Speelman in London. I was very impressed with his collection as well as his professionalism and his significant knowledge of Chinese art history. He showed great generosity in allowing me to select each piece for our Fine Asian Art auction.  Offering these items from the Speelman collection elevates our California auction house to international standards.  In 2006, an auction house in Hong Kong had an exclusive sale of Mr. Speelman’s Ming gilt Buddha collection which achieved remarkable results setting record prices for such Chinese works of art.   Michaan’s is pleased to be able to offer these pieces at auction. 3295 Blue and White Porcelain Baluster Vase with Blue Underglaze Decoration China Kangxi Period (1662-1722) The vase has a flared neck and rounded shoulders – the body contracting as it descends to its narrowest point before flaring out above the foot. The main body of the vase is painted with figures in a rocky landscape with a lake, and trees amongst clouds – the style of the painting free and natural. The figures are gathered on a natural terrace by the water’s edge where two officials – one of whom is fishing – are gathered along with assembled attendants and a warrior. Three different geometric bands encircle the neck – one at the base and two in the middle. The underglaze blue is particularly deep, bright and successfully fired – the shading creating a real sense of tonal graduation. This distinctive colour comes from the type of cobalt used at this period that originated from Yunnan, and produced a different tone from that of the Ming dynasty. {Height 17 1/8 inches} Provenance: From the English A&J Speelman Collection. These panels are bordered by a LingZhi head band, at the shoulder, and by a stylized interlocking lotus flower band, below. The foot is simply decorated with flower sprays, and the necks by two key-fret borders either side of a simple line of scrolling flowers; all the carvings are delineated against a fine diaper background. 3300 Seated Gilt Bronze Portrait of the Fourteenth Abbot of Ganden Tibet ca. 1525-1540 Gilt copper alloy, pigment Tibetan inscription on base According to the inscription in Tibetan language carved in the base of the statue, this portrait represents the monk Rin chen `od zer. The inscription is in two parts, separated by an incised carving of a vajra. The first portion of the inscription reads: “Shri Ma na (sic: ma ha) gu ru pan ratna pa’ da”, this is in fact a Sanskrit verse of reverence including the Sanskrit translation Ratna of the monk’s personal name in Tibetan, Rin chen, “Reverence to the holy great guru Pan (for Pandita) Ratna.” The second part of the inscription reads: “Dga’ ldan `tshoms”, which is referential to the assembly of monks at Ganden (Tibetan: dGa’ ldan), the major monastery near Lhasa. Consultation of biographical and historical sources in Tibetan language allows identification of this monk and an understanding of the historical context of his life. This monk was an important master at the Ganden which is the first monastery of the Gelug pa (dGe lugs pa) order, founded by Tshong kha pa in 1409. Footnote: Vaidurya Ser po (composed late 17th century), page 66, biography of Chos rje Rin chen `od zer and Mkhas btsun bzang po, Biographical Dictionary of Tibet and Tibetan Buddhism, Dharamsala, 1973: vol. 6, p. 133, biography of Rin chen `od zer of Ganden. Rin chen `od zer served as the Fourteenth Abbot or Khri chen (throne holder) of 3300 Ganden. He was born in the region of Tolung (stod lung) not far from Lhasa. He started his studies at the Gelug pa monastery Drepung where he took his monastic vows. He studied both tantra and sutra, as well as astrology, for which he wrote a special manual which is still part of the Gelugpa monastic curriculum. When he was 46, he left Drepung for Ganden where he joined the Jangtse college in 1508, which meant that he was responsible for the residents of the 12 monastic faculties inside Jangtse college. He was personally interested in the arts as evidenced by the important commission of a gilt copper statue of Amitabha, which became one of the most important sculpturese of the Jangtse college. He served the seven year term as throneholder and abbot of all of Ganden monastery from 1522 until 1529. After his retirement, he continued his teaching in Ganden until his death. The statue is hollow cast with an incised double vajra on the sealing plate. The inscription is in front of the monk, centered around the vajra which separates the two portions of the inscription. He is seated in the lotus position, his hands forming the gesture of teaching (dharmacakra). There is no indication in the inscription that this was created as a memorial image after his death. In view of his commission of the gilt copper statue of Amitabha during his tenure at Ganden, it is quite possible that this gilt copper portrait was made at this time.

The multiple floral and geometric scrolls of the robes are very delicately modeled with the designs in very minute scale, clinging to his body. The face is very stark and the lean body is seated in attentive meditation pose. Although the inscription does not use his full name, Rin chen `od zer , there can be no doubt as to this identification due to the inscription of Ganden, and among all the abbots of Ganden, only he had the personal name Rin chen, Ratna, used in this inscription. -Dr. Amy Heller, Nyon, May 6, 2008 {Height 10 3/4 inches} Provenance: From the English A&J Speelman Collection.

3301 Gilt Bronze Figure of a Vasudhara Nepal 14th Century Vasudhara is the ‘Goddess of Well Being’ - granting everything that is needed for a life blessed with prosperity, wealth, fertility, and without hardship; she is the Buddhist counterpart of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, and is very popular in Nepal - particularly in the Kathmandu Valley where agriculture is of great importance. In this gilt bronze, she is depicted in the six-armed tantric form. She carries a book to signify that she is the disseminator of wisdom; the ear of corn as the symbol of abundance, nourishment and fertility; the vessel of gems symbolizing spiritual wealth; and a jewel to symbolize material wealth. The goddess sits at ease on a flat oval base in lalita asana with her right leg extended and the foot resting on a small lotus flower pedestal. She wears a dhoti around her waist and is adorned with regal jewellery and a five-pronged floral crown; the latter screens her topknot of hair that is surmounted by a vajra - representing her spiritual power. Her face bears a gently smiling expression. {Height 6 inches} Provenance: From the English A&J Speelman Collection. BUYER’S DEFAULT If a Buyer fails to pay for purchased Property, or otherwise does not comply with these Conditions of Sale, the Buyer shall be in default. In addition to all remedies available in law, to MA and to the Consignor, the Buyer shall be liable for the entire Purchase price. Additionally, at our option, we may either cancel the sale and retain all payments made by Buyer as well as retain any and all Property of Buyer in our possession as security against payment of the sums in default, or we may re-offer the Property for sale, at auction or privately, without reserve. Buyer shall be liable to us and the Consignor for the additional fees, commissions and costs on both sales (including handling, storage and court costs and attorney’s fees) resulting from the cancellation or resale of the Property and in the event of resale, any deficiency which may result. RESCISSION The sole and exclusive remedy, available only to the original buyer, is the limited right of rescission set forth herein. MA will cancel the sale of Property if the original buyer establishes to our satisfaction that there has been a breach of the Consignor’s warranty of title, or that the identification of Authorship* of the Property as set forth in Bold Type Heading is not substantially correct, based on a fair reading of the Catalogue (as may be amended by posted or announced changes.) IN ALL INSTANCES, YOU MUST GIVE WRITTEN NOTICE TO US WITHIN SIX (6) MONTHS OF THE SALE OF THE PROPERTY, SETTING FORTH THE BASIS FOR YOUR CLAIM AND, AT YOUR SOLE EXPENSE AND RISK, RETURN THE PROPERTY IN QUESTION TO MA WITHIN SEVEN (7) DAYS AFTER NOTICE IS GIVEN AND IN THE SAME CONDITION AS WHEN SOLD. Upon review of the claim and the property, if we are satisfied with the bases for your claim and the property is in the same condition it was in when sold, MA will rescind the sale and return to you the Purchase price, unless we have already remitted funds to the Consignor. In that event, and at MA’s sole discretion, MA shall either pay you as provided above, or shall pay you only that portion of the Purchase price retained by us (the Seller’s commission, the buyer’s premium and any sales taxes collected) and on your behalf make demand on the Consignor for the 73

balance and upon receipt of the funds remit same to you. Should the Consignor refuse to return the funds to you or to MA, we shall disclose the Consignor’s identity and assign to you any and all rights MA may have against the Consignor. Any and all liability MA may have as agent for the Consignor shall thereupon terminate. BUYER EXPRESSLY UNDERSTANDS AND AGREES THAT MA SHALL HAVE NO OTHER LIABILITY TO THE BUYER EXCEPT FOR THE RETURN OF THE PURCHASE PRICE AND THAT IN NO EVENT SHALL MA BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO INCIDENTAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR COMPENSATORY DAMAGES OR LOSS OF PROFIT OR BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY. *Authorship refers to the maker or creator of the Property, and the period, social culture, and origin of the Property as stated in the Bold Type Heading for a given lot in our catalogue. CERAMICS Meissen Porcelain Cup and Saucer Late 19th Century This states that the cup and saucer were made at the Meissen factory in the last quarter of the 19th Century. Meissen Porcelain Cup and a Saucer Late 19th Century Again, this states that the cup and saucer were made at the Meissen factory in the last quarter of the 19th Century, but it also indicates that the cup and saucer may not have been “born” together.
