Lot: 840 Coco De Mer. A Rare Early Regency Period Fitted Box. Made from the coco nut, endemic only to the islands of Praslin and Curie use in the Seychelles group, Indian Ocean. The interior of the shell is made from satinwood, probably from the Ceylon in the Indian Ocean. Sailors from this period would bring these curiosities back with them from there long sea voyages. The box was probably made for jewellery for a sweetheart back home. By the sailors at this time, the nut of large size has been cut in half then quartered to form a lid. There are holes to the sides of the lid and base where at one time, a hinge would have been fitted. A rarity in this form as a box. 14 inches wide, 8 inches high, 14 inches deep. Of fine colour and patination. Until the true source of the nut was discovered in 1768 by Dubresne, it was believed by many to grow on a mythical tree at the bottom of the sea. European nobles in the 16th century would often have the shells of these nuts polished and decorated with valuable jewels as collectables for there private galleries. Estimate: £2,000.00 - £3,000.00
