Introduction Towards the end of Spring Session 2013, the University conducted an experiment to see how students and staff would use free, open wireless. This trial was called Freedom.! ! This document contains an analysis of all the data gathered from the trial.! ! We have published this document so you can see the results. We believe the data speaks for itself… ! ! If you have any questions, please feel free to email them to [email protected].

Thoughts on Usage The Freedom Wireless network was made available to many locations on the UOW main campus, Shoalhaven Campus and iC Central for a total of 8 weeks towards the end of Spring Session 2013. During this period, considerable data was gathered.! ! The table below shows the amount of data downloaded by Freedom users. The downloads are classified as either On-Net or Off-Net. ! ! On-Net downloads represent data being downloaded from other Higher Education Institutions or peers such as Google or iTunes. Off-Net downloads represent content downloaded from other sites such as SMH, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook & torrents.

Thoughts on Users Over 5200 users accessed the Freedom network during the 8 week trial. ! ! The average user download is a little over 2.1 Gigabytes.
From the trial we learnt that 10% of the users ‘hog’ the service.! ! In fact this group of users downloaded exactly 7,023 Gigabytes. Just to be clear 60% of the total downloads are made by ‘excessive’ users who are more then likely downloading content from Torrent sites.

Thoughts on Users The chart below shows the daily user logons to the Freedom network during the period of the trial. During peak semester times over 1200 users were using the service.

Thoughts on Bandwidth Usage In order to support the Freedom trial, the University provided a 100Mb/sec connection to the Internet, this total bandwidth was shared between the users of the service.!
On numerous days of the trial, limits of bandwidth were reached. The data gathered suggests peak use was on the days Mac OS X Mavericks and iOS 7 (for iPhone and iPad) was released.

Thoughts on Device Choices The graph below shows the common devices used by the community. The most commonly used device during the trial was the iPhone and iPad - this is inline with market trends/ data.

Apple iPod, iPhone, iPad or TV (SD) Android Phone/Tablet (Current) Apple Mac OS X Microsoft Windows Vista or 7 Microsoft Windows 8 Unknown Device Other e.g. Slingbox, Chrome Debian Linux, HP Touch Pad (WebOS) or TiVo Linux e.g. Ubuntu, Redhat

Thoughts on Downloads The most common content downloaded is digital media. Torrents were used excessively during the trial and will be managed more carefully in the future.

Web Downloads (HTTP) Media Downloads e.g. Youtube (HTTP) Torrents Mac App and iTunes Stores Other Traffic via the Web Secure Traffic (HTTPS) Video/ Audio Streaming QVOD Media Downloads Apple Software Updates Other

What’s Next? ITS is committed to improving the On Campus Internet experience.! ! We are currently investigating options for delivering wireless services which meet contemporary requirements.! ! We are hoping to have a solution in place for Autumn Session 2014.! ! ! ! If you have any questions, please feel free to email them to [email protected].
